Hello just purchased 20x9 +33 offset rims. Will 265/35/20 tires work with my new rims?

It depends on how you like the tire setup. In my opinion,255 will be close to straight up/down on the rim and the 265 will be a little wider than the rim.
I have 265/35 on 20x10 rims and they are pretty close to straight so on a 9" wide wheel it will sit different.

Depends on the tire too. Some appear wider or more narrow than other.
265 is the size Audi uses on the 9" wide S7 wheel. 255 on an 8.5" is the stock S6 size. IMO the 255 on a 9" exhibits the tiniest amount of stretch whereas the 265 is more stockish looking.
FWIW the upper setup is 265/35/R20 PS4S on 20x9 HRE FF01
The lower setup is 255/35R20 PSS on 20x9 Rohana RF2's
See how you can almost read the Michelin lettering on the 255 because of the slight stretch.

Yes, they most definitely will work. Similar to gk1, I am more of a fan of the OEM square set-up of the 265's on a 9" wheel. PS4S's all the way as well for summer tires.

I'm running 20x9 ET33 wheels on 255/35/20 Falkens. I think 265 would've been too wide, I even thought 255 was too wide at first, but the other posters are correct - tire brands play a huge factor as well. I'm pretty happy with my setup, not too beefy and just the right amount of stretch.

It's harder to tell the tiny stretch on the car.
Plus as stupid as it sounds that +4mm of sidewall does help if your roads are crappy.
    Here's both on.

    This has gotten me thinking........

I've got an A6 with sport and the Audi rotor wheels.
Since stock on those are 255/35 has anyone done the 265/35 change on stock 20s?

I mounted the stock 255/35/20 P-Zero's on my 20x9 Vorsteiner wheels. There is a very tiny bit of stretch vs. the stock 8.5" wheels. If I was buying new tires, I would definitely go with PS4's in size 265/35/20.

I feel like even those are too bulky

    I want to give 225 or 235 a try

or would that be a bad idea?

Yup, very bad... I had 225's on a Honda...

For one, you are reducing the surface area of the tire that is actually contacting the road for traction, stability, cornering on a heavy luxury sedan. Second reason being, I personally dislike with a passion the look of stretched tires - to each their own there.

In general, when moving to a narrower tire on the same car, the surface area touching the ground (contact patch) will still be the same, except that the contact patch on the narrower tire will be longer and narrower than the patch on the wider tire. A longer, narrower contact patch is good for things like snow traction, fuel economy etc., but in general, not as good for handling, dry traction etc.

So a 225 is certainly doable, but will likely handle worse and look a little stretched on a 9" rim. There is a website where you can search for pics of different tire size/rim combinations:

    FWIW
At the same air pressure and weight...
    Contact patch area of a 255/35/20 = 304 cm2 (247x123mm)
    Contact patch area of a 225/40/20 = 288 cm2 (231x124mm)
If you reduce the pressure in the 225 by about 3 psi then it is spot on, but either way you sacrifice load capacity.
    FWIW 265/35/20 = 319 cm2
That's a difference of almost 5 square inches from the 225 to the 265 or more than 10% larger contact patch area...per tire.

Load Indexes, aspect ratios, all factor in.

    255/30/20 with load index 92=289.76 cm2
    225/35/20 with same load index of 92 =287.45 cm2

That’s what I’d like to do when my stock 20” p-zeros are done.. 265/35/20 on stock “Audi competition” package wheels, which I think are only 8.5 wide.

I had MP4S on my old BMW they were 255s and a 9” wheel and that fit was NOT stretched or fat looking.

This looks great. Can you tell me what your suspension setup is? Contemplating swapping my standard for sport springs with my 20x9 et35.

Thanks - this is the S-line sport suspension.
