Decided to try this out. Pretty cool, can use my iPhone now to view DTCs and measuring values.
The HEX-NET starts out in access point mode, middle light is orange. So plug it in, give it a moment to spin up, then on the phone search for network HNx-xxxxx. Connect, bring up a browser and go to 192.168.0.1, default password is password. Do an autoscan; it'll talk about lack of ASM data, just close those. Save your log or not and back out of things. Now plug in the USB cable and connect a laptop, start up VCIConfig.exe, Updates, search for updates, download updates. It should grab the ROD files for the modules the VCDS-Mobile had encountered but lacked the data for and install those. Go back in with the phone and pick a module and fault codes and see the DTC text is now complete.
If you press the little button on the HEX-NET briefly, the orange light will go green and the unit will be in infrastructure mode, where it wants to connect to a Wi-Fi network rather than broadcast its own. You can also configure that connection in VCIConfig. Useful at home, but not so much on the road probably.
All in all, I'll always take my laptop and cable on a road trip. But knowing that I can see a lot of the normal stuff on my iPhone with just the HEX-NET unit alone, maybe I'll keep it in the car normally now.
