A5 Sportback subwoofer

Hey folks. Just looking to see if anyone has found a higher quality replacement sub for the A5 Sportback (specifically, the 6.5” paper cone piece of junk that comes stock with the B&O mid-grade system).

Mine is the 2020 A5, with the sub in the plastic housing next to the battery in the trunk. I’ve heard suggestions of one or another, but hoping someone has successfully done the replacement and noticed an improvement. Thanks all!

The Ampire Bold 6.5 is the only driver that will drop straight in. Otherwise consider adding the Basser box with an amp and a proper 10 inch subwoofer.

It is an improvement but not one I would waste money on again. A lot of the aftermarket drivers have very low sensitivity and need a decent amplifier to drive them. Save your money and buy a new subwoofer amplifier. Infact if you want, just try driving the current OEM subwoofer with a better amplifier at a lower crossover point. If you still don't like it, you have wasted nothing, you then just use that amplifier to drive a proper subwoofer. I drove the Ampire Bold with another amplifier and was actually quite happy. That was until I added a 10inch subwoofer in the Basser box. Now there is no way, I can go back.

I’m leaning toward the basser option, but if I’m not mistaken, they haven’t made one for the current B9 models...

They have it for B9 SB, they don't have it for the B9 Coupe.

Yes that is correct, i have it installed and theres a guide to follow to get it all set up. I also bugged Bruce a lot because he is the forums resident expert haha. The basser box with the new sub and amp make 1000% difference and really make the whole sound system come alive. I have done nothing besides the sub and amp and have no reason to go further upgrading now!

I am very happy with my Basser. Had one of their enclosures in my B8.5 allroad also. B&O actually sounds really good with bass filled in better.

honestly i had no real clue either until i read all the forum posts about this and saw the pdf write up by bryan. After some questions i posted on the forums and in private messages, i felt i could do it and low and behold i could. Honestly the hardest part is being sure of yourself since bryan and bruce did all the heavy lifting by doing it first and documenting! Reach out to them (or me, but i can only speak on the experience i have since i do not know much about car audio myself) and you'll realize you can do it!

Just remember the wiring diagram shown here may not be correct on all cars. The A5 B&O Sportback seems to suggest.

1. Orange(-) and Yellow(+)
2. Black(-) and Green(+)

Try it yourself. There are a ton of people who have done it and many had never attempted an installation before. You can go with a popular inventory list too, if you want to stay with the tried and tested.

I don't know of any better solution, unless you make a custom one or have a shop build a custom one (often fiberglass).

Yes, that is true, as I noted above, apparently on vacation. I would expect them to be back in a few weeks.

This is Basser’s eBay account, and they told me it says seller away because they are not allowed to sell on eBay anymore. I know this because I messaged them thru there before I bought mine back in May, and that is what they told me. They said to order directly from their website.

Basser and Inex are exactly the same thing. I bought the Inex from Incarproducts in the UK and basically received the Basser box drop shipped from Basser in Poland.
I offered to forward ship this to the US from the UK, if anyone was interested and prepared to pay the shipping costs. I cannot imagine it will be cheap. PM me and we can discuss options. And if you wanted to buy the subwoofer cables from me at the same time, the package becomes cheaper to ship to the USA.

Nice! I wonder i replicating it as fiberglass would yield just a little more interior space? Maybe not worth the hassle and just go MDF as original.

The MDF box build requires a lot of complex angles for the B9 cubby subwoofer enclosure. If you are skilled with cutting and fitting odd shaped MDF panels, it is a less messy process than fiberglass.

One could build a decent fiberglass enclosure with enough patience & skill. I worked with fiberglass years ago & it is a messy job that takes care & planning. The fiberglass can be really itchy, so one needs to be careful about breathing or touching raw & cut fiberglass.

Here is an example of someone built a box for an 8" subwoofer on the B9: B&O upgrade with 8” JL sub in custom fiberglass enclosure.

Nothing comes close to the simplicity and build quality of the Basser box. Can it be replicated, absolutely. But by the time, you have measured, cut, glued, joined and carpeted the box, you will have wasted so much time, it just isn't worth it. Basser will use a CNC machine cutting these out in bulk to mm precision and must have moulds to hold the glued up boxes.

Hello there, I am looking to do this to my S5 as well. Do you know if all the areas that you need to tie into are in the trunk/spare tire area or does an installer have to run cabling to the OEM head unit too up front?

Did you end up disconnecting the stock sub?

Do you have a bass knob or are you able to adjust the bass setting some other how?

Lastly, can I ask what amp you used?
