2004 Audi A6 2.7t Startup Problems in the Morning

Hello Guys, I would love some help and thank you in advance for anyone willing to share some knowledge with me.
I have a 2004 Audi a6 2.7t, with 161k miles on it, I've done all the routine maintenence on it since I got it and it has been great so far.

Recently: I went out in the morning to start my car, and it would just crank and not turn over. Spraying Starter fluid into the airbox starts the car right up and I'm pretty much good for the day as long as I start it up here and there.

I have ordered: VOD Fuel Pump, and Bosch Fuel Filter which come in next Weds from ECS tuning.

I believe I have the stock original fuel pump in there as well as my fuel filter is most likely the original.

I have no problems with the car when I start it with starter fluid it runs at fuel power and normally, I also do not have any error lights or check engine lights, there is seemingly nothing wrong with my car once I get it going.

Now, I would like to ask if I'm on the right path with the fuel pump and fuel filter replacement.

There isn't any long term damage if I use a little spray of starter fluid temporarily to get me going until next Weds when I'm going to install the new parts?

Any help would be most appreciated .

    Thank you,

    Anthony

    Have access to vag com?
Might be something pending even tho there's no check engine light

I would think if there was a fuel pump/filter problem it wouldn't run good after you get it started

I don't have a VAG COM but I believe Auto Zone can read errors for free, is that sufficient? Thanks Nick.

I've done alot of research, and also used the search functionalities the problem is, most of the threads were never seen to completion of the fix, I know this problem is not unique, I'm just wondering if this is signs of a weak or impending fail of my fuel pump? Is this a symptom of a clogged fuel filter?

Hello guys I’m bumping this for help and also an update. I replaced the fuel pump with a VDO one from ecstuning as well as replaced the stock filter that’s been in there for god knows how long. All was well for two days now the original problem crept back in today. I did an oil change, and it didn’t fire right up.

Starter fluid to the air box and it did.

About an hour passed and I was going to replace the ignition coils I put in (ore I’ll store brand) and put the oem ones back in. ( I did this a few weeks ago to try to get a better idle)

I decided not to replace the coils because my mechanic said it wasn’t the coils.

Anyways I pulled the battery terminal for like fifteen mins while deciding what to do , when I reconnected the battery it fired up.

What do you guys think this is a crank no turn over intermittent issue.

Do I still have a bad pump, do you think the store brand ignition coils are bad or perhaps it’s something electrical related? Please help I’m at my wits end w this I need help I’m trying everything I can to get consisting start up

    Hey Anthony;

I am no expert and i hope you get it solved soon. If it wasn't for the fact that she starts right up after some starter fluid i would say check your crank position sensor, which is what happened to me before, as well as your throttle sensor (i believe that's what they call it), which is located on your gas pedal since yours should also be a drive by wire for a 2004 correct? I had both those issues before and it was giving me the same symptoms except i never sprayed starter fluid like that.

Your best bet is to get someone to use a Vag-com on your car. the basic ones at Auto zone are not as efficient and won't read certain things that the VAG will, despite the lack of a check engine light.. Also, the 2.7T (at least mine) are very demanding on the coil packs and OEM are usually the best ones. I had some issues with that as well, no check engine lights but issues that were solved by replacing them. There is got to be someone near you on this board that would be willing to meet up with you with a VAG or take it to a VW/Audi mechanic.

Again, not the best with that stuff, so hopefully someone with good knowledge will chime in for you! Good luck

You need to check your power at the fuel pump. If you have no power at the pump while cranking then you have some issues. Ignition coils are not going to fix a fuel issue. Figure out why you have no fuel getting to the engine.

I'd like to thank everyone who chimed in, I have read the responses and dually noted I will get a VAG Com.

UPDATE : It's been about 3 days and I've started it right up in the morning, no problems. I also haven't gotten stuck out in town. So the problem either smoothed itself out or is very intermittent at this point.

After my oil change I noticed a huge performance improvement, the engine just sounds so much better, and I'm starting up pretty good. Just an observation.

Guys honestly, I think I know what the problem is how can we miss such a simple concept:

    Fuel Pressure Regulator ES#2581058

    This may be bad....

So I've ordered these 3 parts to smoothen out things anyways:

    Fuel Pressure Regulator ES#2581058

    Coolant Temperature Sensor ES#2623216

    Crankshaft Position Sensor ES#2813143

So screw it I'm going to refresh all 3 of those parts and see whatsup.

Thanks for following my issue I will keep you guys posted.

If there is anything I should know about those 3 parts in advance please let me know !! :D THANKS GUYS LOVE YOU ALL
