    Scratched front parking camera lens

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So it looks like my front parking camera lens is scratched from high speed encounters with either road debris or insects. I regret not taking time early on to find a suitable protection film for this one part. Unfortunately you can see the scratches on the image on screen. It is more of a nuisance than an actual problem since you can still see everything you need to see to park or avoid obstacles, but still.
Has anyone had any luck polishing scratches out of it and if so what product or process was used successfully?
FWIW I've determined it appears to be a glass lens and not plastic like I initially thought.
    Thanks

A quick Google search points a lot to using toothpaste and some elbow grease. I have never tried it tough.

I would polish it by hand, and start with a mild polish and microfiber towel first to see how the lens responds. You can always get more aggressive polish including glass specific polish if a mild polish doesn't improve the clarity.

Very sorry to hear that. I've heard of it happening a few times. This does bode the question. I there something out there (or does anyone make) something that will custom fit over the front camera? Something like an eye contact shaped lens cover ish. Maybe a precut PPF piece. Yes, you could cut your own, but wondering of simple stick on.

If you wax it, it might fill in the scratch enough to make it not noticeable anymore.

Yeah I tried waxing, and no luck. I also wanted the "contact lens" type of protection, but I fear it does not exist.
I am about to try glass polish, but just wanted to see if anyone had any luck with a specific product. I had planned to use polywatch when I thought it was plastic, but after finding out it is glass I'm not quite sure what I want to us as their glass polish produt is not as well reviewed as the plastic polish.

I've tried cutting compound, followed by polish using an electric polisher. No joy!
I also tried with a headlight restoration kit (3M). Again, no improvement at all.
    I just gave up.

Once you get it fixed to your satisfaction maybe try making your own protector. I was thinking maybe you could get cellphone screen protector and carefully cut the needed round sized "patch" for the camera.

I had some scratches on my suv windshield from something embedded in the sponge/squeegee at the gas station. Was able to get it reduced with a glass polish from griots garage. It was improved so I didn't go to anything more aggressive. There are a lot of products out there. Maybe some of the car detail guys can chime in.

Mine is a bit screwed. I assume that the outside is glass or sapphire. I didn't try to fix it yet, but I do like to restore and repair watches. I fixed, well improved a sapphire watch crystal a lot. How? Dremel, felt pad and diamond paste.

Yeah something like that was what i was thinking maybe. Do you have a recommendation on a paste to use? I saw one video where they used jewelers yellow rouge on a watch crystal. Would that be similar?

I wouldn't recommend jewelers polishing compound. Why? Because I tried it first before I bought the diamond paste. I have the full set of Dialux polishing compounds at my disposal, so I had them all to try. I ended up buying the 7 piece diamond lapping paste from Kent Supplies on Amazon. The other stuff would have taken decades to work if it even worked at all.

The Dialux could have worked on a simple mineral crystal or something like Hesalite, but the sapphire crystal on the Bulova I was refinishing was sapphire.

If anybody is interested in getting scratches off their clear displays and I suspect piano black plastic purchase "Polywatch".

I tried a dremel and some jeweler's rouge and my front lens still looks like crap. It looks like it's got water on it. I'd love to replace it and if I do find a way, i'm going to have it coated with PPF.
