    Exhaust Tip Maximum Temperature

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi Everyone, I am thinking of getting my Borla exhaust tips ceramic coated with Cerakote H-Series Gloss Black (H-109) but looks like the temperatures have to be below 300°F.

I don't think the exhaust tips will be more than 300°F, can anyone confirm.

Pretty sure its gonna be way hotter then 300. But you can ceramic coat headers which are 3x as hot so not sure why 300 is the limit either.

I am trying to get more of a gloss black for the tips. Yes the Glacial Black is good for something like 1800°F but it is a flat back. The clearcoats are limited to 300°F.

No one can confirm what your exhaust gas temp is going to be, much less what temp it’ll settle at around the tips.

Get an infrared thermometer and check it. I highly doubt that a coating rated at 300°F will last on your exhaust tips. You’d probably be best off using high temp engine paint

I have used both Plastidip and standard off the shelf Rustoleum spray paint on my tips (I've had a lot of different exhaust setups) and NEVER had an issue. Your tips really don't get that hot. Grab a can of your favorite color spray paint, clean then off properly, and go to town.

An infrared thermometer will tell you how hot it gets after you slow down and stop. You want to know the temperature during a a hard pull. Either stick a thermocouple on it, or buy some Wahl Temp-Plate indicators and do some hard driving. I'd do it myself but car is in pieces right now. They make these in all sorts of temperature ranges. https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Instrume...3045970&sr=8-6

    Thanks for the help everyone.

I decided to coat the exhaust tips with Cerakote Glacier Black C-7600, rated to 1,800°F. Its more of a satin black so I think should be fine without having them too glossy. I had a look at some R8's yesterday with black tips and they were really glossy and a bit too much for my taste.

Just food for thought, metal transfers and retains heat real well and I can tell you that my exhaust temperatures clock over 1800 degrees F at WOT when I do a casual highway pull in 6th gear with DP, on a SP setup I would be over 1650F. I get the #'s from my P3 gauge (as accurate as that may be).
