DIY cold air intake for 2.0 A4-A5?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am not paying $200-300 on a tin shield, pipe and a filter lol.

Has anyone seen a DIY write up on a universal kit and some fabricating a heat shield?

If not then ill have to end up making one. It seems by now tho alot of people have had made these. Ive searched and found nothing.

It seems like the car would get good flow the way it is set up from the factory, its just it doesnt look as cool lol. Taking the engine out and doing all the workd putting new pistons, rods and rings in, putting the k04 turbo and stuff.... Just wanna be able to show it off when im done I guess.

So you want to do all of that....and hurt performance?

Add some carbon fiber stickers to the stock intake if you want some “show”...too much? Ok duct tape.

Next thing you’ll want is a coffee can muffler.

I don’t know what is worse...the fact that you got stuck with the car... or the car is stuck with you.

Wanna know whats worse? Being stuck in a forum with a few members that think they are better than everyone else.. There is definitely 3 of you that I know of, all you do is try to make people feel bad for having their own ideas and or opinions.
Since you assume you know me let me assume I know you... You're the type of guy that smacks his own ass when having sex. Or wait probably not sex... masturbation.

You are not stuck...or maybe you are?

It has less to do with thinking about myself vs you or anyone else.

I guess what you hear is frustration.

Frustration because myself (and others) have honestly tried to help you and not only been ignored but called out on being wrong....which 10 new threads and 100 posts later you find we speak the truth...or is it 100 new threads?

Anyway, as we have seen, it takes a lot of patience and a special tone to get you to listen, and believe.

I do believe that you might want some help/advice in your upcoming endeavor and I hope that you “pay” that advice and knowledge forward to the next “NitroViper” without having to resort to spewing as you and I have above.

I find that funny since you and others are the ones first to call someones ideas or research a waste of time. I can go through threads here from the past month of people asking for help when all they get is You're wrong and im right replies...

dalmation53's post was a waste as space as well as yours was. Did he even have to say what he posted? It was a waste of time and space. It gained nothing but a shot at me and to add negativity to the post.

If a Cold Air intake is done right it is very beneficial to the engines performance. They arent just for show or a money grab. If done right I know for a fact my car could benefit from it and also looks better for car shows and other car events. Just because someone likes something you dont, doesnt make it wrong.
Or deserve an insult. Did you have fun throwing the insult? Does it make you feel manly or you just cant help it?

Show me a CAI for our cars that has 3rd party verifiably performance increases and I might buy it myself.... but I, like you, do not want to spend 200-500 on 30-50 in parts unless, at least for myself, there is an uncompromised benefit. With my engine it is go before show.

There are quite a few threads and exponentially more posts on this exact topic.

Outside of sucking hot air...The main restrictions are the filter and to a greater extent the TIP(turbo inlet pipe). Unfortunately, as noted above, my AFE high flow filter is suspect in letting dirt into the engine, I’m flipping to an OE to verify.

Additionally, and historically, Un-reinforced TIPs have been shown to collapse during boost ramp up. I have posted a way to mitigate this deformation. There is speculation on the benefit, but I know this won’t hurt.

I just spent $709 on a turbo with taxes so im not in a good mood to begin with lol. Spending 200-300 on a tube with a filter is just plain dumb. I cant believe people do it, they must be loaded. The way our cars air intake is set up its pretty good, just looks bad to me. I had cars to go to the car shows my whole life, it would be nice to show off my unique build... well unique for my area anyways. But I would even have this build (when im done) if the car wasnt messed up. I will lose a ton of money when I sell this car so might as well keep it 10 years and make the most out of it.

I kept my stock box, dropped in an afe pro dry and ecs tip that were on sale at ecs. Setup cost less than $90. Went with a turbo muffler delete as well to help with the spool a bit. Happy camper here.

There are few people who have made their own custom shields on here. Search on Google and bunch of come up.

I went with a full on intake from ECS because getting their turbo inlet hose + Afe dry filter, it was only 100 or bucks more for their intake when it's on sale. Plus I had some fuck-you money so why not? It's your car bruh, do whatever you want to it.

I was on the side of "use a AFE filter and get a new inlet pipe" for quite a few years. I recently snagged a used AEM covered intake for cheap and I very much enjoy it. It sounds cool and feels great with stage 1 tune

Well yeh, any filter that offers higher flow is going to trade filtration for flow, that's just how the physics works. I use AEM dry flow filters, tried and true. However even if you went with a cone filter on a CAI, you are still trading filtration for flow regardless.

Did you end up doing this? I'm very curious to see the results.

Protip: try to run 3 logs of each. That will help to eliminate variation from other sources.

Also, to reinforce your TIP, is that simply just a hose clamp placed halfway down? Couldn't the pipe still compress in on itself under suction?

I made one, pretty simple DIY project that cost me $35 or so. It just makes cool noises, no gains in power obviously, but i really enjoy it. My build thread is linked in my sig, you'll see my post regarding it on the last page.

If you need more members/numbers to convince you, I'll add my voice: keep the factory air box, unless you just want more noise and looks. Nothing wrong with that, just know you are not adding power and turning a pretty good design into a hot air intake.

Pretty much what 99.9% of people are going to tell you, except for the few that bought it thinking it would actually improve performance and are now in denial. There are numerous threads on the subject.

I have not yet, had to charge up the laptop. I use my phone for for 99% of my logging in real time. When I want to graph and post I have to lull out my laptop and VCDS cable, first world problem.

Haha, same problem. My laptop is so old the battery lasts like 50 minutes. Not great for finding open roads and logging. Not to mention it is clunky. I've had my eye on a Windows Surface which should work well for logging but I just don't have the funds.

I’d tell you why they don’t gain power on these cars but I’m an idiot wrapped up in a moron and you wouldn’t listen anyway.

But you’re the type of guy that will spend money on an intake to dress up a part of the car that you can’t see....

Your car ain’t a show car buddy. It’s an entry level luxury car with a bolt on turbo kit that looks stock 🤣

Dont you ever have anything positive to add to a post? "Idiot wrapped in a moron" I heard that on Everyone loves Raymond and knew there would be a use for it someday.

Any car can be a showcar with someones unique touches. My car is lowered, has aftermarket wheels, RSNAV in the dash, will have a upgraded turbo, I have the reiger sideskirts ready to go on... It might not be a show car to you but at local meets its good enough to sit next to the VW's and other cars.

I’ve never said one negative word to you and you pull out that jem. 🤣

The problem is with your generation. You hear something you don’t want to hear and call it negative or “hating” or I’m “triggered” instead of thinking maybe they know something you don’t.

The problem is with your generation. You hear something you don’t want to hear and call it negative or “hating” or I’m “triggered” instead of thinking maybe they know something you don’t.

Right. And he and I argue. Mind your business. It had nothing to do with you and he’s an idiot. You’ll realize it yourself soon enough.

And yes you are that kind of guy. You just admitted it here in this thread🤣

I hate this thread. If I had the ability to delete it I would. This forum sucks anymore.

Protip: try to run 3 logs of each. That will help to eliminate variation from other sources.

Also, to reinforce your TIP, is that simply just a hose clamp placed halfway down? Couldn't the pipe still compress in on itself under suction?
This^^ putting a hose clamp on the outside doesn’t accomplish anything unless the hose clamp is bonded to the material.

What is it about any thread with "air intake" in the title that brings out the knives?

You're right it does suck, you cant have an opinion here or your own thoughts. You cant ask questions without someone saying, are you second guessing me?... Why cant everyone just calm down I dont get it.

I dont know who you're referring to but I post these threads only to get trolled and called dumb and my ideas I want for my car are stupid and a waste. It's non stop and by the same people.

I can see why new members leave and join VW forums instead.

This thread was fine until the 5th post where a member starts with insults...

Well mostly because there are probably at least 100 threads on the topic already. At least he was talking about creating his own not buying some pos from some co scamming people out of money with no evidence to back up their claims for our platform.

I feel you, the forum has no decorum or tolerance for debate or exploration of ideas as within 10 posts into a thread someone gets butthurt and it turns into 3rd graders calling each other names. It also doesn't help that some people misconstrue the context of a post and take any critisism as a personal attack.
