Cts turbo make a k04 kit for ~$1300 if you’re looking to upgrade . On the way back to the dealership from my inspection the engine light came on and it happened to be the turbo, which Audi replaced for $500 instead of their normal $3,000 (don’t have Audi replace it)

I believe the model is k04-0015, but websites will have what cars what kits fit on. https://www.ctsturbo.com/product/cts...-turbocharger/ here’s the link to the bare bones k04 kit from cts, you can buy more expensive kits but they come with exhaust and engine parts.

I have no belief that one can just drop a K04 onto the car and expect the thing to run correctly. Not unless you get a tune. As the CTS product page says, "K04-specific tuning required". And I'm not a fan that CTS requires to to machine down some of your hardware to make things fit.

If you're looking for a replacement turbo, the normal places would be the online parts stores (ECS, FCP, Europaparts, etc). And for this category www.buyautoparts.com aka www.turbochargerpros.com are two I watch as well. Though their prices are up significantly vs three months ago.

if you just want to fix it with no hassles , like your OP suggests , put another IHI in it and call it a day . im sure you can find the part number, if not smac will likely pop it in this thread. then google it, order , replace.

As long as it's a real reman and not an eBay rebuild. If you're looking at the Stigans, I've read enough short-lived stories about them that I'd prefer to pay more and not have to be replacing it that much sooner.

As a B8.5, you should be looking for an 06H 145 703S, while my B8.0 would be an 06H 145 702S. The 702R->703S line came with the 2.0T in the C7 A6 and then made it's way into the B8 at the refresh. That line uses the 710C piston diverter valve, while the B7 and B8 that were using the 710G diaphragm DV were moved to the 710D piston. No idea why. No one has picked apart a 702S vs 703S to my satisfaction to explain why Audi bothers with the two different units. And I don't have spare cash for such explorations.

But if you look at any of the non-Audi options, they are all going to be the same for the B8.0 and B8.5. Take these BorgWarner builds that have been around a few years now. It seems these are just the same B7 turbos (BW made the turbos for the B7, Audi moved the task to IHI for the B8, but it's still the same turbo mostly; the B7 and B8 use the same exhaust gasket, same N75 wastegate controller, and same N249 diverter valve (in the case of B8.0). But you can see the difference of the 7-vane exhaust wheel on the BW vs the 11-vane wheel on the IHI (iirc, this was pointed out in another thread by another member, Mars(?)) as well as the turbo muffler mounting. The BW comes in 53039880290 for the transverse mounting and 53039880291 for the longitudinal mounting. But it's the same 53039880291 for B8.0 and B8.5. I wonder which DV they put on it.

The BW was $800 at buyauto/turbopros, but you see it's way up right now. The price goes up and down like that month to month. No doubt a supply issue given current events.

I certainly like the BW version of the wastegate arm to actuator arm mounting, appears to be the old adjustable unit. But I'm up in the air about the suitability of the turbo. I sent an email to BW asking about their product and as expected got no response.

Would the $850 IHI on ECS work for a B8.5? I would guess probably, but I can't know until someone actually tries. Or someone figures out what legitimately is different about 702S vs 703S. On the ECS listing, I find it interesting that the URL refers to BWT (which could be BorgWarner Turbo, or a reference to engine code BWT, which was in the B7, and so would have used a BorgWarner turbo), and that the first pic is clearly of a BW turbo and not the IHI turbo. I'd probably email ECS for some clarification, though for all we know, the BW and IHI are interchangeable.

If you really, really care, you'd have to go with the Audi OE 703S. But I'm sure not paying that kind of money, even if I wanted the car to go another 100k.

I know nothing about the unbranded options there at buyauto/turbopros. Email and see what they have to say about the origins of those units. They do have a 1yr warranty. That's not bad for me, I'll put 20k on it in a year. If it survives that, ....

I get off easy, I'll just go $850 ECS IHI most likely. But I can't commit something on the B8.5 side till I have better comfort for what is/why the 703S.

Autohaus pimping the BW for a K, which is still a $100+ more than what it's been at points this year, but lower than the other places.

Also, forgot to mention, the 703S from Audi comes with the rattle clip on it. The 702S does not. Whatever you buy, if it is an IHI and it doesn't have the clip, get it and put it on. Extra reinforcement. It won't apply to the BW; wouldn't be able to clip on the BW.

Cool; be sure to post back your review of how the car reacts to its presence once installed. Will also be curious what DV part number they have installed.
