Troubleshooting P2006 and P2007 - Intake Manifold Flap Stuck Closed

Any feedback on my troubleshooting plan is appreciated.

The supercharger has not been off since the dealer did some warranty work a few years ago, so this is probably not installation error related like I’ve read in other threads.

I think it is vacuum leak related but I have not been able to find any damaged lines. I’ve had a small vacuum leak code that had been intermittent but never threw the CEL. That code is no longer present but now I’m getting P2006 and P2007 for both banks intake manifold flaps stuck closed. I have been planning to do the PCV, thermostat, water pump and carbon cleaning so I’m planning to troubleshoot this while doing that work.

Per this TSB a vacuum actuator leak could trigger both codes, so I plan to test both with a vacuum pump While I have the supercharger off. I’ll also test both position sensors just in case.

I tested the N316 intake manifold runner control valve and the resistance is in range. I did only get 3.8V on the connector instead of battery voltage which was strange.

This thread mentions changing a heater valve but I’m not sure what that is? I assume that is something I should check? Anything else I should look at?

I would test the vacuum prior to pulling the supercharger off, it may be something simple

Any suggestions on the best way to test for leaks on this engine? I did some searching but did not see anything.

I put a vacuum hand pump on the line coming off the N316 intake manifold runner control valve circled in red and couldn’t get it to create vacuum, much less hold. Doing the same thing to the lines circled in yellow I was able to create/hold vacuum on both. I believe this is the line that goes under the supercharger and splits to both vacuum actuators for the flaps, so thinking it’s either a damaged line or one of the actuators is bad. Sound like I’m on the right track?

Updating this post for anyone that comes across a similar issue. I was already planning to do the PCV, water pump, thermostat and carbon cleaning but nothing had failed yet so I had been putting it off. This issue required that I pull the supercharger to troubleshoot further so I dealt with this at the same time. I found my passenger side vacuum actuator was bad. When I took it off there was something broken and rattling around inside. My driver’s side actuator worked fine but I decided to change them both. I got both from ECS as they were much cheaper than my dealer and they had both in stock and ready to ship (other places were showing 3+ days before shipping).

I ended up getting this vacuum hand pump from Harbor Freight when I was troubleshooting the issue.

Adding some pictures as well. You can see that the intake manifolds need to come off in order to best access these. And since I had the vacuum pump I used it to hold the flaps in place when reinstalling the intake manifolds.

This is hugely helpful thank you. My 2014 A7 has 111k miles and I had no signs of problems, but decided to head it off at the pass and replace PCV, Thermostat, various plastic coolant pipes, and water pump with AZ summer about to hit. Right now it's still not too hot in the garage, if I wait a month or so it'll be no fun.

So I did the whole job and put everything back together. All seemed good, then about an hour into driving check check engine light came on. VCDS showed

P2006 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 1: Stuck Closed
P2007 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 2: Stuck Closed

I suspect that I either crushed the vacuum line or failed to properly replace one of them. I will try the vacuum test. thanks!

Did you hold the runner flaps open when reinstalling the manifolds? If you don’t, the runners get jammed on the metal flaps inside the cylinder head and will throw the same faults.

You know...... It's amazing how well it fits with the flap over the plate.... Guess what I'm doing now too! 🙄🙃 Thank you for the suggestion and this thread! Good thing I've already had to take this supercharger off like 6 times for other things. I'm declaring myself a pro with number 7 or whatever it is.

I have a B8 S4 that last September had a thermostat quit and in typical fashion I ended up doing the rest including a couple other things while I was in there that I didn't know were broke and finally got to drive it today and enjoy this fresh cel code. At least this time I don't have to put it in service mode. I'll hopefully have this back together in an hour with enough daylight to got for another test run. Oy..... Thanks again!

On a side note, more parts later related to the thermostat I have finally gotten to drive my s4 and she's running better than ever!

I just got my car back from the shop after getting the water pump and thermostat replaced. I'm getting these two codes. Can I reset the flaps via vcds or does it need to be done mechanically at the shop?

Most likely it means the shop didn’t have the flaps in the right position when they reinstalled your intake manifolds. You can clear the codes in VCDS but if the codes come right back it means the intake manifolds have to come off to fix it, installation error by the shop.

If you just replace the thermostat and water pump, the 👨*🔧 should not have touch the intake manifold, so that’s out of the equation. The mechanic either forgot to plug back the vacuum hose or power plug to the IMRC solenoid or have obstruction on vacuum hose.
