Those with a black audi: Which products for swirl remover and wax?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Title! I have an 08 brilliant black B7. I am starting to see some swirl marks in the bright sun and it's driving me insane! I've been doing some research, and it looks like Meguirs Swirl X is the way to go, and the ultimate compound may be too harsh for just swirls. As for wax, many recommend Meguirs Ultimate Synthetic Wax.

I'm open to all suggestions regarding this! I'm likely going to be hand buffing me. Also, should I use a polish after using a swirl remover before the wax is applied?

    Thanks in advance!

on mine I did a full 3 step polish and paint correction. then I use the meguiard hybrid wax ceramic in spray bottle.
(dewax, stonechip filled, blod eliminator, clay bar, dewax, rough pad+cutting polish, then medium pad+ polish compound, then soft pad+finish compound, dewax, ceramic wax. Its a 6-7 hours job)

But if you want a easy all in one kit, I suggest the new turtle wwax black solution kit.

See Pan's video about this product, he's using it on a black audi, amazing :

Subscribed. My ‘17 Q5 S-Line is Brilliant Black. Interested in knowing how others address swirl marks on black. This is the most recent vehicle I’ve owned of many that were some form of deep glossy black. I like the color. I’ve yet to find a product that works well on swirl. Open to suggestions.

That kit looks fantastic, I'm going to look into it now. I do need to fill in a few rock chips on my front.

I went through this with my '96 GTi back in the day. I swore I would never own another black car again. That thing looked dirty 15 minutes after washing it, and the swirls bothered me on a molecular level. I ended up burning the clear coat trying to fix it.

Now, I have a dark blue Audi... and that's almost as bad. :D so, I'm all ears to how to keep it looking good. I guess you only have so much clear coat to polish off before you need new paint.

black car are for car guys. You really want to love your car to clean it often, and keep a good care so it will be swirl free.

Because when its dirty it is, but when its clean damn it look nice, mirror style.

Grey or white is boring dirty and boring clean, most shit box on the road are grey.

And nice colors, like red, blue , green, yellow, well, depending where you live, cops will notice you way more, worst if the car is modded.

Proper paint correction is probably the best way, this is my brother correcting the paint on my S4:

Everything else is just a bandaid fix. Once your paint is back to being correct, it is much easier to maintain.

Wax is old school now. Apply the two step polish on clear coat. Then ceramic coat and forget it.

I hand washed that thing twice a week, never used a car wash . I burned the clear coat when trying to use an electric buffer on it. I'm a car guy, but I have other commitments in my life, too.

He did a sweet job on that car. That spot on the hood looked great. I've spent a lot of time looking over my car, and luckily I don't see much staining at all, I think I can just get away with a polish + wax and get good results.

I used Turtle Wax swirl and scratch remover and hoped my touch up paint arrived before the next weekend’s car show. It didn’t.

Before the show, I hand washed, dried, then Turtle Wax Black Box kit. Black tinted prewax cleaner and black tinted carnuba wax on a polisher.

Now that my touch up is here, I’ll do that and ceramic coat it.

A few years back I did a full paint correction (Clarbar -> Meguiars 105-> 205 -> Turtle Wax Black) and the result was amazing. With kids (and no driveway or garage and daily parking under trees on the street) the paint has more or less gone to shit because washing it is pointless is a half dozen birds will shit on it the next day. There are still very few swirls though, and the ones that are there are from the auto car wash.

If I were doing it today I'd do a similar 4-step process but substitute out a ceramic/nano-coat sealant instead of wax as they last WAY longer, particularly when the car isn't garage kept like mine. Brilliant black is a BITCH to keep shiny, but damn does it look good for those 10 minutes after you've washed it...

What did you use to polish it out? Even teh cheapest Harbor Freight Dual Action Orbital polisher (what I used on my Avant) can do an amazing job provided you use quality pads and compounds and pay a little bit of attention to proper technique. Traditional spinning polishers take a LOT of practice to use correctly, they're best left to pros...

A harbor freight DA is what I used with the 3 levels of pads they had.

I used the cutting pad with the swirl remover and the DA set at 2. Then the medium pad with the prewax cleaner, also set at 2. Then the polishing pad with the wax with the DA set at 3.

Their pads are trash. I bought some good pads from Detailers Domain, and they worked really well. Never heard anything good about the HF pads but theIr DA does a perfectly acceptable job.

This! The demo is for 3M, but he switched to Presta products. I agree the Presta line is GOLD compared to anything else. One nit pick is that the Presta Fast Wax does not last that long.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oFd43vnUOs

Depending on how bad the paint is... Makita w Wool pads and then hit the Porter Cable DA for the foam pad work. Yes, you are going over it like 6 times, but once you are in "maintenance" mode you only hit it 3 times (light swirl compound, glaze, wax) to get right.

... You will end up with a lot of "stuff" just to keep a car clean.
