2013 Audi Allroad B8 - intermittent hard start

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The past two days I've had three intermittent occurrences of a hard start while all other starts were normal, on a B8 2013 Audi Allroad.

    1) Press Ignition Button : car fires and immediately stalls
    2) Press Ignition Button Second Time: car continually cranks for ~5s before starting, after which it seems to run normally

I ran a scan and received the following. I'm looking at fault 4106 - Bank 1; System too Rich at Idle, since it gives a date when it occurred, although this wasn't the date of the most recent occurrence for some reason. I was thinking the N80 valve might be faulty but wasn't sure if that could lead to an intermittent hard start I'm experiencing. Any help is appreciated.

Any thoughts on best place to start based on the fact that the issue is intermittent, it's related to starting only, and the car never stutters/hesitates otherwise? I was originally thinking HPFP or sticking injector but the fact that it happens randomly and only at start-up perplexes me a bit and maybe it's more of an occasional air leak when starting?

I am experiencing the exact same issue I believe. Seems like it only happens when my engine is already warm, like if I've just driven the car, and start it up again 10-20 minutes later. Very intermittent, maybe 2-3 times in the past 2 months or so from when it first happened.

I've had the entire timing chain/tensioner job done at the dealership in the last year, so I doubt it timing chain stretch. From another thread some ppl mentioned the possibility of it being a clogged fuel filter - starving the engine on the start because the fuel pump wasn't primed when you opened the door (cause the car was recently driven).

I have experienced it on a cold engine at one time I can remember so I can't say it's totally related to a warm engine. My biggest clue is when it started after mashing the throttle to the floor. I'm thinking it's more of an N80 valve issue. Fuel vapors collect, and when starting, the engine draws in fuel-rich air plus more fuel from injectors which creates a rich issue leading to a hard start. When I put the throttle to the floor when cranking, it allowed fresh air in the intake, leaning it back out and allowing the start. Maybe the N80 randomly goes haywire once in a while? The only problem with the theory is that I've never had an issue after refueling and it's such an infrequent occurrance.

Are you getting a P2188 error? Do you smell fuel in your oil?

I have not scanned it yet, and have not gotten a CEL from it.

Next time I remember I'll pop the oil cap and give it a sniff.

It's been so intermittent that I haven't been thinking about it much. I used to try and chase down every little thing with my last Audi and it led to a lot of headaches - I've become less concerned with some age I guess lol. Especially since my car is nearing 100k.

I hear you there; I had the same approach until I smelled gas in the oil. That made me want to take action for obvious reasons. I was hoping to get more direction based on the symptoms on this thread before I start throwing money at the problem. Here are my options and my thoughts if anyone wants to weigh in.

N80: I'm putting my chips here at this point per my explanation above. The only odd part is that it's such an intermittent issue.
HPFP: Possible, but when it starts by putting the throttle to the floor the HPFP wouldn't have any change, nor would successful starts when the pedal is to the floor. Plus, I never have any stalling, hesitating, etc. Also, engine oil level has not gone up meaning it's not leaking significant gas into the oil, so I'm not thinking this is the source.
Stuck injector: Possible, but the issue is only with starts, not with any other engine issues. Also, engine oil level has not gone up meaning an injector is leaking consistently in the oil, so I'm not thinking the source.
PCV: Possible, but I believe PCV issues lead to more lean issues rather than rich issues. But I don't know much more about this.

Did you ever fix this issue? I bought a used 2013 allroad a few months ago (may late June?) w/74,000 miles and this has been happening to me off and on when the car is warm. I can start it right back up from a stop but leave it for a bit and come back and sometimes it will struggle. Replaced ignition coils and spark plugs as I was getting a code for bank 1 being to rich and that plus changing the air filter line to the high pressure fuel pump and the issue is not nearly as frequent and when it does happen it can actually push through the issue and start the engine some of the time but the issue still exists.

I've read that it could be the High Pressure Fuel Pump, Coolant temp sensor or Crank position sensor. Thinking about replacing the crank position sensor since its so cheap and see what happens.

Sorry just saw this, potentially it's your timing chain "lengthening" due to age.

During warm starts the chain is warm and has lengthened even further, this throws off the crank angle and can cause a lot of issues.

My dealership was able to confirm that my timing chain had "failed" by doing a diagnostic via vagcom that reads the crank position angle, they replaced the timing chain and tensioners. About 60% of the job was covered by an extended warranty I have.

No worries. I'm thinking this could be the timing chain lengthening and I was going to get a VCDS to obtain info on the crank position angle. I just installed a new crank position sensor so we'll see if there's a difference. Though now since the temps have cool I'm not encountering the issue as of late.

Could you possibly share the bill for the timing chain replacement?

Dealership cost was around $1800, I had an aftermarket warranty that covered about 60% of it so I only paid about 800 out of pocket thankfully.

Thanks for the info :). I'll see if I can't get the Allroad into a shop and find out what that crank position angle is. Wish me luck.

So I believe I fixed my issue. The main difference between our issues was your Allroad was immediately stalling where mine would keep cranking and not start unless you gave it gas. It also would idle a little weird for a bit after this occurred. I also noticed my 0-60 seemed slow. I changed the crank shaft position sensor but the issue returned. I just changed the camshaft position sensor and immediately noticed a difference when the engine started, immediate and quite noticeable improvement in MPG, noticeable improvement in performance and engine sound and my 0-60 time was nocked off by a full second so I believe in my case it was the camshaft position sensor.

Andre, did your no-start issue go away then? Thanks.

It did not. No start when warm after sitting idle is still an issue, just not that much due to the colder weather. I'm thinking its the vapor purge solenoid. I bought a replacement vapor purge solenoid but it was the wrong fit so I'm waiting to get my money back and purchase the correct one for my car.

The HPFP is very plausible. I replaced the N80 and cleaned the MAF w/ no success. Then I noticed oil level dropping and replaced the PCV valve and have not had the issue since.

I'm pretty sure you just fixed my issue and I haven't even done anything yet. Looking up the PCV valve, the errors I've had and the loss of oil I've seemingly had recently I'm sure this is the fix. Will replace and update. On another note I have been using E85 only and the issue did not exist but this is likely having to do with how much more gas is needed for E85.

Unfortunately the startup issue came back a little while after replacing PCV Valve. But what is weird is it came back while it was cooler outside and now thats it has warmed up and after replacing all the E85 with 91 the car hasn't stalled since but it is hesitating just a bit on startup sometimes and I can't tell if it's normal or not. So I need to play the waiting game some more and see what happens.

I believe replacing the PCV valve resolved oil consumption issues. After replacing the oil I haven't noticed it going down at all and before it seemed to consume it fairly quick. It may have also helped with the initial starting issue in some way but I can't be sure.*

One thing to note is I bought the car used and found out that the original car battery is still inside... So it's 8 years old at this point, straight from the factory. so I need to get this replaced asap just to eliminate any possibility of it being a dying battery. If it doesn't have issues for the next month or so then it likely was the PCV valve and those start up issues where ghosts??*

So it's 8 years old at this point, straight from the factory. so I need to get this replaced asap just to eliminate any possibility of it being a dying battery. If it doesn't have issues for the next month or so then it likely was the PCV valve and those start up issues where ghosts??*
I hope that fixed your starting issue. Mine is getting worse. Just got VCDS and will take a scan tonight, hoping to see something.

Replaced the high pressure fuel pump and the issue is resolved. Not even a hint of hesitation after driving around for days in extreme heat.

I had also replaced the battery which didn't fix the issue.

My car was doing this but very very intermittently. The high pressure pump is definitely the culprit, that’s what fixed mine as well.

    +1 on the HPFP

Intermittent is definitely in the realm of HPFP issues
