    Programming New Keys!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Need a little assistance here! I have a B6 that the cluster failed originally and I sent off the ECU, cluster, and key to have reprogrammed. Turns out the guy had to replace the cluster but appears he never adapted it to the car. From what I understand, that's okay because the ECU has immo turned off. Well, fast forward a year and my son lost the only key we had. I had new keys cut but the locksmith was unable to program them. Here's what I'm assuming but really need my hand held on this. I have to turn immo back on in the ECU to program the keys, right? Is there a way to do this in the car via OBD? Also, since the cluster was never adapted, it still has the SKC from the donor VIN which I need to retrieve as well, correct? How would I go about this one. I think once I have these two items, I can do the adaptation through VCDS, correct?

BTW, the car runs, it's just that the hazard lights flash and the cluster is in "safe" mode.

I apologize for being a noob, but I'm kinda out of options here. I am computer capable, just need a little direction.

    Thanks,

you need to turn on immobilizer in ecu first. Then use SKC from ecu and used cluster in order to match everything together. Ideally what should of been done is cluster matched to keys then immobilizer turned off in the ecu. ECU is immobilizer master in this system. So yes the car will run but the cluster needs to see matched keys to cluster in order to function as it should . There is no way to turn this on using vcds. It needs to physically be turned on in the flash file in the 95040 eeprom on the ecu pcb . It can be done via OBD but not with vcds. A Special all in one OBDII dongle is needed it takes roughly 10-15 seconds. This all could of been avoided if the data from the old cluster was transfered to the NEW(use) cluster or the used cluster was virginized properly. Then you can adapt without any SKC.

Thanks Eurox. I agree, not sure why the cluster was never matched. It was a well known guy on the forum that did it for me, IDK. Anyway, I have a blue ebay cable that I've been using with VCDS, will this work to flash EEprom? Also, what software do I need. There are two on nef's site. One is Arg's me7-95040_v1.31 and the other is me7-eeprom-1.40. Or is there a easier one for someone like me? Also, I keep hearing put the ECU in boot mode to read/write. Is there good instructions anywhere on how to do this. Thanks for the quick reply.

It looks like I can only read from OBD with this tool, not write. Would it be worth trying Commander to do the job. Wonder if it'll work with my cable?

I question, being that the ECU is immo'd off etc, if you pull the SKC of the (replacement) cluster with vag eeprom prorgrammer, would you then be able to match keys with VCDS or can someone confirm that this process fails?

From what I understand, it will fail since immo is off. I'm just not sure how to turn it back on without pulling the ecu. The locksmith's software had a immo on and immo off button built into the software and that worked but he turned it back off after he couldn't get the keys adapted so I could at least drive it. My guess is he was using the wrong pin since the cluster hadn't been adapted. Also, the eeprom programmer tool will only read the cluster if i select Bosch encrypted, so I can't see the skc. This has just gotten ugly. Still had to pay the locksmith $400 to cut two new keys.

    Copied from this thread...https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-DIS-car/page2

1: Open Vag EEPROM Programmer. For future steps, always use the RB4 dropdown list instead of the buttons. I don't know if they change depending on what mode the cluster is in.
1: Read encrypted cluster .bin file. Save file for backup. Label all .bins so you know what they are.
***If you somehow manage to brick the original cluster, put it in mode 6 (adapted) and write the backup encrypted file to it. It should go back to functioning normally. If it does not write the first time, try a few more times. Start over again.***
    2: Put in mode 4 (virgin/new).
3: Read decrypted .bin. At the bottom it will display a 4 digit number (ex. 1111). Put a 0 in front of it, and this is your SKC (ex. 01111). This number will be adapted to the new cluster so it matches the ECU. Write it down. You are now done with the original cluster.

I’d give it a shot before messing with the ecu. The process of figuring out the immo file within the ecu is pretty well documented on nefmoto.

So I've put the cluster in new mode and read decrypted but still no login code. If i try to read access code, it says Access code is know, will not write to file. Thoughts?

I read somewhere on NefMoto where eeprom programmer would not pull info on certain clusters. I can read/write and set mileage, but no info at the bottom of the screen. Can someone possibly help with this issue. And yes, I put it into New mode.

    Thanks,

Would it be crazy to try and find an rb4 dump to write to this cluster and see if maybe it's a problem with the loaded .bin file? Remember, the cluster isn't adapted to the car, so should be fine right? Anyway, I have both the encrypted and decrypted files from the cluster.

You can do that but I would recommend having a encrypted dump and decrypted dump as backups. As crypto mask is different on some clusters. However, setting the cluster into new mode to do the adaption will not work without a SKC as its not a virgin cluster. You would need to have a virgin dump without a vin and immobilizer data to adapt without a SKC and have immo on in ecu. Bottom line you need immo on in ecu end of story.

Clay where in USA are you?? This is a fairly simple process for me anyways but I do this everyday just about. SKC is only available in decrypted mode. You will need original cluster and new(used) cluster SKC to adapt the cluster. Basically you will be transferring old immobilizer data to your new(used) cluster without the need to get new keys if you have them.(I know you said you lost the keys and needed new ones.) However you need immo turned on in ecu to do any adaptions as mentioned ecu is immobilizer master. Can't do jack with immo turned off.

Euro, thanks for the input. That's what I was afraid of. I believe I now have the SKC for the cluster, address 46 & 47 of the decrypted dump. Reverse and covert. I have two new never been adapted keys. I'm in North GA. Just to confirm, even if the cluster isn't "adapted" to the car, immo still has to be back on in the ecu to adapt keys? And I'm guessing the ecu needs to be pulled and put into boot mode to do that. I do know that some softwares will turn it back on via the OBD, just not sure how. What would you charge?

Immo needs to be on to adapt cluster and keys. Some expensive software will do it however most software is only available to locksmiths and is not cheap. Without specialized tools yes ecu need to be pulled and read on the bench to access 95040 immo chip to turn immo on. Doing it this way will also show you the vin for the car and the immo id as well as the original SKC. I currently have one of my personal cars in the shop. That will be scrapped soon but still start and runs but is mostly apart. So I can adapt the ecu cluster and keys if thats what you want.

Well I got logged in, and yes I guess immo has to be on to adapt keys. It kept failing. Just to confirm though, I don’t have to adapt the cluster at all do I. Or if I do, do I need to do it before or after I learn keys.

    Thanks.

@EuroxS4; I’m not doubting that immo needs to be active on the ecu to match keys I’ve just personally never tried it.

I can put two keys in adaptation value, save, and then close controller and then it pops up on dash 0-2 but never learns either one.

Without immo on you will not be able to adapt any key to the vehicle as ecu is immobilizer master it calls all the shots and determines wether it will let you adapt a key or not. To answer your other question the cluster needs to see matching key/immobilizer data to the immobilizer data stored inside the cluster. So yes you need to adapt cluster then adapt keys last.

Gin+ been there done that you have no idea how many times ive dealt with people with immo off ecu's that had lost keys. The immobilizer is happy as long as matching keys are used with the cluster. The minute you lose a key its no bueno. Only reason I could see someone using a immo off ecu would be if they purchased a used tuned ecu with a flash file thats locked to the vin or immobilizer data as changing that data s will revert the ecu to stock boost levels and so on. This should be the only reason for immo off inside ecu. Still does solve the issue if you loose a key its a headache in the sense you have no choice but to backup immobilizer data first. Turn immo on. Adapt new keys and then if you want the stage 1 or stage 2 file back on the ecu you need to reflash old immo data to get the tuned flash file characteristics back and turn immo off again. Immobilizer compares vin, immobilizer id and skc all 3 need to match in ecu, cluster and keys in order to start the car.

Audi has a sick since of humor. Found two fault codes in the AC die to no comm from cluster immobilizer. Why would you shut down air? Well at least it’s not summer. Lol.

It shouldn't affect it But I never tried either. I would clear codes and go from there. But I would assume it shoudln't matter.

When I had an immo match error, HVAC control was rendered inoperable. Apparently flashing hazards, no start engine, and tamper proof ECU screws weren't enough.

Fairly straight forward. Can be done with galletto or nefmoto flash tool iirc. If you want access to all immobilizer data it needs to be read in bootmode. Then you can edit or copy over everything and so on. Just remember you need to correct the checksum everytime you make changes otherwise you risk bricking the ecu at which time you need to reflash in boot mode again. Also always make a backup of any eeprom or flash you read.

Thanks Euro. Do most people just bench flash it or I guess theoretically you can do it in the car after popping it open and grounding out the pin for boot mode. Probably just easier to buy a harness and do it on the bench

Alot of DIYers bench flash. I have seen some also run a wire from the pin on the pcb to a switch on the side of the dash to ground it temporarily in order to put it into bootmode. However its not the fastest way to flash. There is some software that will read and write immo data without bootmode however its costs money and is not worth it for someone just to use it once. For diy its easier to build a simple harness and used a pc power supply with obdII connector and some free software to read immo data in bootmode. Or if you have a eeprom reader the support 95XXX eeproms you can read it in circuit with the need to power it up. Just need to backup and save just in case then edit and correct checksums when your done.

I made a bench harness out of female connectors and an old 12v external hard drive power adapter.

FYI, visualME7logger has a GUI interface written into it to use with argdubs eeprom programmer tool. It’s pretty hard to beat.

Gotcha. Quick question. I try to do the adaptation per VCDS. When I put the old pin in the test value it says system Not OK. Then when I hit save it says error.

No it was on. Was never able to adapt cluster For some reason but here’s what we did. 1. Turn on immo in ecu. 2. Set cluster to new(virgin) mode. 3. Adapt keys to cluster. 4. Turn off immo in ecu. I hated having to do it this way but was the only way we could get it to work. Idk.

Are you using VCDS to adapt keys?? If so you only need virgin mode in cluster to pull the SKC. Then turn it back to normal. As using a USED cluster in virgin mode will do you any good as it has a skc stored in it and immobilizer data and vin already written in it. If it was a brand new cluster yes it can be done that way. USED cluster you need original pin and the pin from the used cluster to match.Setting used cluster to virgin mode will not work you need both skc's and turn the cluster into regular adapeted mode and use vcds to adapt. it should do it without issues.
