    C6.5 steering wheel options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Searched and only found 1 thread on this. Looking for different steering wheels that folks may have retrofit into our cars. Specifically looking for a new style, 3-spoke, round air bag style wheel. What wheels if any are directly compatible (Mk2 TT?)? What wheels can have the airbags re-pinned to fit? If you went this route, did you modify wiring, connector? Both?

Here is the one I found.
    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...g-wheel-fit-c6

    Thanks.

For plug and play I think you have to stick with steering wheels with the exact same buttons.

That said, you can make a lot of steering wheels fit as referenced in the post you linked.

Or if you are willing for fork over the cash these guys have steering wheels with plug n play harnesses.

I saw the offerings from Europrice. Was wondering if folks out there have gone with these wheels sourced from overseas and retrofit on their own? There are a ton of offerings on eBay for wheels from the C7 and B8 platforms. Not sure of the limitations of having the airbag shipped from overseas or if there are differences between NA airbags and ROW airbags?

When looking through the build sheet for German cars for the US market, they always mention Air bag for NAR (North American Region) as one of the build options. Based on that I assume the air bags must be different.

This is from the build sheet of my vehicle:

If a 2009 already has a heated wheel, would it be possible to put a heated + paddle wheel in and code in the paddles?

I've heard a lot of mixed answers on people whether the two can work together. And the other question, would a B9 A4 steering wheel be able to work on our cars?

I picked up a B8.5 flat bottom. Will be installing shortly. Need to make a small modification to the connector but it should function completely.

Hey did you ever get it installed?
I have C6.5 with non heated / non paddle and I have a chance to grab B8.5 S4 wheel with paddles for cheap.
Wanted to see how much of a plug and play it would be

Yes, my 2010 A6 3.0T quattro has a heated paddle shifter steering wheel that was an option for this car. Works great, and looks nice, too. No flat bottom about it, though. Now, whether ordering and installing a paddle shifter equipped steering wheel will give you functional paddles, -that I don't know. Someone more knowledgeable about this should chime in.

Beware putting B8.5 wheel in, might result in none functional airbag.

Airbags on B8.5 and C6/6.5 are different in a way of deployment. They're both dual stage, but C6 deploys both stages every time, and the B8.5 deploys one stage and may or may not deploy the second stage. The C6 second stage helps inflate the airbag right after the first stage. The B8.5 second stage is more of a venting system...

I wish I saw this earlier....

Is this true for other platforms such as the C7 or 8V? How did you come across this info? Are you suggesting that the B8.5 airbag wouldn’t be deployed completely? Or that it is a problem to have both stages of the airbag deploy? I would think this would be something regulated by the ECU based on impact sensors?

You know me form C5 section. There's bunch of retrofits done over the years there on that model, that's how I found out about different stages of airbags. I have a friend that deeply searched built-in on airbags over the years and different Audi platforms. He is someone that I can trust and he did open few of these for retrofits, he is very inclined in steering whee swap/airbag compatability. I'm not sure if it wouldn't deploy entirely or if it wouldn't deploy at all...I know about the case where someone retrofitted a dual stage bag to a single stage car, got into an accident and sw air bag didn't deploy while others did. Hard to say what would happen with that setup in a C6. Air bag modules are different between C6 and B8.5...so who knows what would happen and how it would go in deployment scenario.
C7 is dual stage and same as B8.5...where 8V is single stage bag so they're totally different.

Yup. Which is why I asked the questions I did figuring with your thoroughness you might be able to answer. It’s certainly concerning as I have done this swap. Thanks for chiming in.

You can always sell that wheel setup and get a correct one, the downside is a proper setup will run more money than B8.5 one.

Next question would be what exactly is considered the "proper setup"? OEM wheel from the correct year?
I've certainly seen a few options which have the original airbag with custom shaped flat bottom wheel but obviously they can be pricy.

The whole point of this is to get rid of the terrible looking airbag that came on the C6.5, B7 and B8. We want a quality wheel with proper thickness that doesn’t look so dated. I still have my old C6.5 setup but I’d really prefer not to go back.

Original Airbag looks ok with the right steering wheel - at least I think that. Here’s my before and after

    C6.5 steering wheel options

From a guy in Poland - here is his Facebook page

    https://m.facebook.com/flydesigns.po...gle.co.uk&_rdr

He customs it to your specification so cost will be dependent on that but I paid around £350/$460 at the time (including delivery). Current exchange rate puts it about £300/$400 (1680 Zloty is what I paid)

No need to send your wheel back either.

My 2010 a6 came with a 4 spoke heated and i swapped it to a 3 spoke non-heated with paddles. I don't believe there is a 3spoke with heated AND paddles. There is a 4 spoke with heat AND paddles.

When it comes to going flat-bottom; those are newer and air bag compatibility is definitely something serious to consider and make sure it works and then comes the button work.

It's why i chose to go for the same steering wheel from the same year.

To get the paddles and 3 spoke; took 20min to swap and code.

On the Flip side I wish mine came with the Carbon fiber trim that Fakie's has. cost up to 1g to find og replacements :D

EDIT: One small correction, airbag from 4 spoke is NOT a perfect fit as a 3 spoke. The plastic from the airbag wraps around the spokes.
