I thought more of the dealerships would be desperate to dump cars off the lot, but for Audi (or at least specifically the new RS3 market) it does not appear to be the case in north CA. Things could change if the economy continues to be squeezed by inactivity. But things could also reverse and the market could heat up even more. So I just went ahead and pulled the trigger for a bit under the invoice price. Felt satisfied, but I admit that if I was 6 months more patient I might've found a better deal. We'll see.
I feel that CA has the highest concentration of RS 3s for sale when I look up listing across Cars , Car Gurus, Auto-list, etc, than around the USA. Maybe only next to Texas. Maybe that has to do wit it. In New England, I went to go look at a 2020 fully loaded recently and priced it on Edmunds, KBB, NADA for a
base-point. KBB the equivalent New 2019 for 10% off ( I know the sound system now comes standard in the 2020s and that reduces the total cost by $1,200 for included the technology package). So I went in with a starting ask of $58.7K for the 2020. Salesman gave me a sheet breakdown an wanted MSRP, which surprised me as EVERY new Audi on their website had a slash through their MSRP pricing (Even their 2 new R8s). I countered with what I drafted up on KBB and the salesman in turn was surprised. Asked me where I got the quote and told him I configured it online and it stated it was what I thought a fair deal would be. At first he said he couldn't sell it for that, stating that I was asking him to mark down the car ~10%. I told him I researched it and wasn't looking for a
Corona Virus discount, just offered what I saw what people were paying across my state. Told him I respectfully understand if he can't sell it to me for that price. It is what is. Said "I'm willing to meet in the middle and do $61K". Salesman again said along the lines of he can't do that. Said, "I understand". Salesman was a good dude. They had my contact information from when I first made the inquiry, so I didn't bother saying anything after that.
What was
really surprising to me, as I was packing up my stuff to go and get up from my chair from in front of his desk, he asked me "If I sell it to you for $58.7K, will you buy it today?". In my head I'm like, "Thought you just said a minute ago you can't sell it for less than MSRP, haha". He said he would go talk to his manager. Manager came through to talk to me while Salesman waited in the hallway. Manager said "he can't sell it
below MSRP. It's a rare car. Not many around. He doesn't get incentives/rebated from Audi. He still has a year to sell the car due to it being a 2020". Told him I understood that. Thanked him for their time and left. Was an interesting experience. Wasn't frustrated at all by the experience and luckily for me, I'm more than willing to travel to a dealer that is willing to do an X% off MSRP deal and drive it back to my house. I've seen a couple good deals on 2019 & 2020 models with prices off MSRP around the states. Once I complete my move in a month, I'll start reaching out.
