The EA888 Gen3 in B8.5 (ROW) that came out in 2012 is very much an extension of the EA888 Gen2. It did adopt VVL on the exhaust cam in all profiles (1.8T long. and trans. and 2.0T long. and trans.), which had been on the 2.0T long only for the Gen2. It did add VVT to the exhaust cam. It did integrate the exhaust manifold into the head.
They started to define the implementations a bit with "power classes".
PC 1 included the 166 PS 1.8T CJEB and 177PS 2.0T CNCB in the A4/A5 and the 177 PS 1.8T CJSx in the A3.
PC 2 included the 221 PS 2.0T CNCD in the A4/A5/Q5.
PC 3 included the 296 PS 2.0T CJXC in the S3.
One bullet from the list of PC 3 changes: "Cylinder head with another alloy than other engines of this group, due to the higher thermal stress".
The EA888 Gen3B (aka Gen 3 MLBevo) in the B9 came out ~2016 (go figure). This is when we get the "B cycle" implementation, which has the VVL on the intake cam instead of the exhaust cam.
The PC 1 engine is the 2.0T B cycle engine, which is quite different. It has 188 PS and replaces the prior 1.8T and 2.0T Gen3 PC 1 engines.
The PC 2 engine is just an update of the Gen3 PC 2 engine, with a power bump to 248 PS.
No discussion of the PC 3 engine since there is no EA888 PC 3 in an A4/A5, and that's what SSP 645 is about. I assume the PC 3, like the PC 2, carried over with minor changes.
