How do I clean this rust in the wheel area?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had this rust ever since I bought the car from the owner in the wheel area and I don't know how to clean it. I now have black Neuspeed RSE102's and the rust stands out even more than on the OEM wheels seen in the picture because the gaps are wider in between the spokes now:

Take the rotors off and spray them with a high temp coating on the hub.

I’d buy new brake rotors instead of DIY paint. Cleaning it out is temporary fix and rust will come back. You don’t have to spend $1000 if you are just looking for better looking rotators. You can hit eBay and buy black coated rotors for less than $200 to match your spacers. You can also check out R1 rotors that offer black and grey costed rotors with two different types of coating, zinc and geomet. StopTech offers rotors with black coated hubs if you are looking for a better quality part and name brand.

When I clean my car, I always hit the wheels with some gyeon iron remover
    https://clean-garage.com/gyeon-q2m-i...SABEgIOy_D_BwE

I also spray the hubs generously,
this helps break down the rust somewhat, then you can give it a good scrubbing and they turn out looking pretty good.

Of course it will come back if you don’t keep up on it.. but I’m surprised, especially after going through the winter months when I don’t hand clean my car.. it can build up quite fast.
    Hope this helps👍

Wire brush. I’d try brass brush first, less likely to scratch. Steel brush may work, but be gentle. Then paint. Rustoleum makes a flat-black high temp paint,... painted my bbq with it once. Held up well for a couple years.

If looking for performance gains, ECS has a two-piece rotor which is a number of pounds less weight than factory rotors. Spendy though.

Thanks everyone for the info. Now I have to decide if I want to clean and paint the rotor hubs but have the paint chip and hub rust in time or buy new black coated rotor hubs that won't rust. The later is much more expensive though. I'm thinking about the ECS rotor hubs I linked to because they are lightweight and I already have lightweight wheels so the weight reduction and handling will be even better.

Can’t go wrong with a few hours and $20 to paint the hubs. Just make sure you keep all the brake components on the same sides they’re currently installed on.

My experience on OEM hubs. Sand the rust to smooth (not bare metal) and brush paint with Tremclad Rustoleum flat primer which matches the original color fairly well. I did it at seasonal tire change and it took less than 30 min. and has now held up for 2-1/2 years. I am not adverse to repeating at the interval. I should note that I live in a fairly dry climate where salt is not used often. The original rust came with the 2 year old car from the Canadian Pacific coast.
It seems people are quite happy to spend your (big) money if you follow their advice but I don't see reports of actual experience.
