    Paint vs powder coat rims?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi folks, a local shop has a covid special to paint rims for $85 each and $100 if the rim needs repair. Would love to paint my stock rims black for my white s6. Question is what is the diff between this and powder coat? Powder coat starts at $200+ per rim. This option they paint and finish the face and paint the barrel. They have lifetime guarantee on finish. You can see some examples on their ig below. This a good option to get black rims?
Says the finish is similar to car paint. Looks pretty good but never seen rims where the face was the only thing painted black.

All non-polished stock wheels are usually painted. And even polished is usually clear coat painted.
So as long as they prep well and do quality paint work there is no problem with painted wheels. And lifetime finish guarantee is definitely worth something.
Powder-coat is just a different process using basically powdered resin (like plastic) then melting it. It can be more durable, but not always, and depends again on prep and quality of work and materials.

Thanks...I’ll probably go for it. White on black is too nice to pass up for $400

i went powdercoated for my s6. A local shop has a drive in deal where they remove the wheels, tires and weights and then powdercoat. Then the tires are remounted, balanced and black wheel weights applied. 600$ and done in 1.5days. this way the whole wheel is painted as well.

Talk about service! The drive-up service is great, but more so the day and a half turnaround.

I am getting my rotor wheels powder coated - the OEM rotors are known for chipping/peeling clear coat. The clear coat was chipped on a couple of them when I got them.

Powder coat is more durable due to the electrostatic application and curing process, allowing the molecules to create a density that’s more durable than paint. My wheels will be satin black for the rotors, aluminum finished fins and then matte clear powder coat to finish the entire wheel. Total $700, which includes da sanding the aluminum fins, dismount of tires, mount/balance and black weights.

thats gonna be badass. and, that price is nice, too.

these are the full gloss black (I started with a semi satin finish desire but they talked me out of it. they gleam like chrome in the sun.)

They go really well with the Nardo Grey and other black trim you have. The gloss does look really good.

I was originally thinking gloss, but the wheels already had a satin finish on them and I really liked the contrast (gloss car / stain wheel).

Wheels before I sent them in to be refinished:

Luckily the previous owner already had the center caps painted. Appreciate the offer though!

thanks for the compliment. My color does almost appear matte (moreso muted) grey. I agree with your choice seeing what you have now. those might be oem centercaps (bought a set but wanted the rings stealthed too)

    great pic.

Powder will be more durable. I never considered paint for that reason, so unsure what an expected cost delta would be. Sounds like prices others mentioned in here were much more reasonable than what I got.

As long as we're pic whoring... These are the Nardo wheels I had powder coated.

    Hoping that was a compliment.

I'm not a good color contrast creative type but preferred to do something besides black or silver on my car. I tried a red as something different and hated it. So having to pay to have them redone again, I basically picked a safe color and, in some sense, have something unique. I was actually 50/50 on this color, but i am really happy how it turned out.

Haha, I guess his comment about Nardo went right over me head.

    Thanks
