welp. nevermind. I understand I have to have the dealer or someone with the right software do it anyway.

If you have VCDS or OBDeleven you should be able to do it yourself. If you take it to the dealer, bring thee Vaseline as it will be over $500 to replace a $200 battery.

Easy to diy, or go to your local Indy shop. Dealer is just unnecessary

    step1: buy ross-tech VCDS
    step 2: buy battery

still cheaper than going to the dealer. and you get VCDS to do "mods" and future problem solving. VCDS has paid for itself with this one service.

for your actual question, its pretty straight forward. get any quality battery, that meets the OEM specs. OEM specs are listed on the battery.

The dealer got me last year for somewhere around $450 for a battery replacement. And they wonder why I haven’t been back.

Ended up becoming friends with one of the service guys.

I wont ever forget when he told me, they make 50% commission off of every service sale !

-That's why the prices are so high

Are you guys talking about just changing the battery??? Why dealer, why VCDS??? Does it throw codes if you take it off?

From my research on the forum, the battery needs to be coded/programmed to the car. The computer will read the battery at the same capacity as the old one and this could lead to it wearing out faster. At least that’s the way I understand it.

I was told by Indy and random guy at Advanced Autoparts that the battery has to be programmed to the car, yes.

As I understand it if you install a new OEM battery then you update the BIM code in the computer with the new code off the new battery. NON OEM batteries don't have a BIM code so you would just change the battery serial number by 1 digit and the computer will then "know" that the battery was changed and adjust to a new battery accordingly.

I have not had to do that yet for my A7. Somehow the original battery is holding up for me with an August 2012 build date and 201,000 miles on it.
