To Tint the rear tail lights or not to tint?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thinking of going with a light spray tint on my rear tail lights, what’s the honest opinion out there?

    Anybody done it, pics?

I vote no, if you have the facelift tails which have a nice modern color already.

Or if your ARE wanting to spray... don't use a rattle can.

Pull the lights, bring them to a shop and have it done properly...

Clean, scuff and lay out tinted clear coat... but don't do a black out job...

I have gone this route many times... and never had any issues

Not opposed to it at all, depending on the colour of the car and overall theme you're going for with it.

But if you do, I second using a light film. It's protective, reversible, and looks better imo

I sprayed mine on the car with a rattle can and it turned out fine.

Prefacelift, so looking for the darker style of the postfacelift C7.5 (S7). The issue i find with the film is it’s too dark, could not find a lighter version. Found a light spray can which worked well in the past.

Agree, laminex has a few shades: tint, smoke, and something really dark almost black. I did the tint. I gives the darker modern look widebodyfx mentioned.

I'm against smoking your taillights. Absolutely horrible look IMO. However, a slight tint works on certain cars.

Nope, don't tint or smoke taillights. Not only it doesn't look good, it is also unsafe to other drivers.
Plus you might be in a pickle with the insurances should you get rear ended.

This is how mine turned out. Please excuse the late winter crud and I haven’t gotten to the spring cleaning yet.

I say don't spray. Lamin-X is the way to go. I have the lightest shade the call 'Tint' on my pre-face S6 and I love. it. Makes the tails dark ala post-facelift vehicles keeping a somewhat factory look but with the film you get the added benefit of lens protection.

Yeah same here...Call me old-fashioned, but I just dont understand why you would want your car to be less visible at night, especially in an emergency braking situation.

    Exactly same here.
The pre-facelift lights are ridiculously bright. Prior to tinting people behind me at stoplights would shield their eyes. Now it looks like post-facelift tail lights.

I did the Lamin-x front and back. Went with their lightest (tint) color. It was darker than I thought it would be but having the black optic package it was just enough to take the "edge" off the rear red lights and make the front look more aggressive

With the Prestige package I have the LEDs in front also so they were plenty bright as hell to begin with so the tint doesn't really change much front or back. Our lights compared to most other cars on the road were at a higher level to begin with, tinted still are.

Now for the folks that do the really dark tint... yeah that's ugly and dangerous but the light tint.... car guys know and can tell.

Agreed with the comments on NOT using the spray. At best it turns out looking "OK" and typically looks bad after time and sun exposure. If you are going to do it use some of the tint products out there. As mentioned, if you end up not liking it or the product you chose blocks too much of the lights it can easily be removed without damaging the light housings.

I recently did this using VViViD air-tint smoke (not the blackout) product. It went on very easily and looks like glass. This product also advertised to not block very much light transmission which was also important to me for the safety reasons others have mentioned. I liked it enough that I also used it to do the front and rear red/orange side marker lights. All for less than $17 worth of product. Pretty low risk if you end up not liking it. Pics below, I snapped them in the garage so the tint looks far darker than out in the sun. Also pics of brake lights on, running lights on, and before/after for contrast. Brake lights are still just as bright as the 3rd brake light up top.

How easy is this to work with? My vinyl shop wanted $150 to tint my tails. I like this price better. Worse case scenario it’ll cost me $170 for the project lol.

This was my first attempt at any vinyl work and I think it took me less than 1.5 hours drinking a beer and doing both tails, rear side markers, and front markers. If you don’t have a heat gun you will need one.

Apologies, I didn’t mean to offend. I just have yet to see a spray last more than a few years without beginning to look bad. The spray is not easily reversible and I think now there are just better options for the OP.

I went with a VERY light tint on mine, using Vivid Vinyl wrap in a light smoke. It's very subtle and looks great. I would not use the sprays.

Speaking as one of those shielding their eyes, yes, PLEASE, tint or something else to reduce the spotlights.

Now I'm going to have to check my post-facelift for spotlights.

Just get a $20 smoke tint and give it a try. Goto YouTube university and watch a few vids on tail light tinting to get an idea on the steps and give it a try. Screenshot_20200520-150810.jpeg

Purchased the Vvivid film in lightest shade. Will be giving this a go myself. Ordered directly from vendor as Amazon has smaller sizes listed.

And putting it out there to show the options.

My opinion is likely worth to you exactly what you paid for it, but this post is asking for opinions.

Not a fan of tinting taillights or any exterior lighting. It's really trying too hard to look cool, and in some cases it can actually be a detriment to visibility and safety.

    To each, his own.

I won't tint my tail lights again. About eight years ago I had my tint shop tint my tails on a Lexus medium dark. Less than a month later I was rear ended at a stop light by some chick. Damage wasn't horrible and she paid without going through insurance but it was no coincidence having tint and getting rear ended shortly after.

Yeah to echo the others, I don't tint tailights for safety reasons. Inattentive/texting drivers are a freaking menace and I won't make it easier for one in a $200 econobox to smash into my nice car.

My taillights were ungodly bright before I tinted them, and they are still very visible, and the 3rd brake light isn’t tinted.

If my wife and I were out in separate vehicles, she would not follow me because of how bright they were. She likes them now.
