need advice with 2015 S4 purchase

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

I was looking for something more sportier than 2017 A6 that i bought few months ago. I looked at 330i and A4. they were ok... but not as sporty as I thought. Then I drove alfa romeo Guilia and had almost decided on it until today. I drove S4 and wow! It was impressive.
    I am looking at S4 2015 with 47k miles.
I am just wondering if I need to my extended warranty on this car. I drive around 15K per year and i plan to keep this car at least 5 years/100K.

I know there are posts about this but I was looking for some quick advices. I plan to buy a car by end of the month.

    Thank you!

I bought my 2016 one year ago with 37k miles on it along with a 2 yr/60k Audicare warranty just in case. The car has been strong over the past year but I know I need to take it in to get the passenger side mirror fixed because it gets stuck and doesn’t engage the reverse down. The car already had the water pump replaced by the dealer before purchasing so didn’t need to worry about that part failing as much.

The Guilia is definitely nice looking, but if you spend any time researching it, the car is unfortunately plagued with problems.

I bought my 2014 S4 with 33k miles and no warranty in 2019. I felt comfortable with the service history and my mechanical aptitude that the lack of warranty didn't concern me. the B8.5 S4 is one of the more reliable "S" models in recent years, so it's a good platform to begin with.

but if you like the car, ask for service history and if the DSG (if not MT6) has been serviced.

Definitely call around and find a Pre-purchase Inspector, esp if the car is at a dealer. Find one that will come check out the car, meet at a parking lot or even in the dealer lot (they'd be crazy to not let the car be inspected). I paid 100 bucks for mine and he found a few things the dealer hadn't mentioned and helped me talk them down a bit on price. They will check all 4 corners, deep scan the computer, check all fluid levels, and hopefully even take it for a test drive to see how everything feels.

Best 100 bucks Ive spent on the car. paid itself off 10 times just in the price i was able to negotiate, and gave me good peace of mind that i wasnt buying a lemon.

insure yourself. These cars have been pretty reliable even with higher mileage. Put the money or monthly payment that would go towards the warranty into a slush fund. You will come out ahead in the long run unless you have a catastrophic failure. Figure that the T stat will fail around 80k miles give or take. But any money not used for warranty work can go towards tires, brakes, rotor ,tires ect. .I spent $3k on my 2011 that I purchased with 50k miles. After 3 yrs and no claims ,I feel like I threw that money away. But I did need Brakes tires, rotors and battery. Plus after extended warranty had expired ,I spent $1500 for new T stat including replacing the water pump and Pcv valve while the supercharger was off.

You should not absolutely need a warranty with 47kmiles, but you never know. While not many things are likely to fail before 80-100kmiles, if they do, they’ll be expensive. Dsg would be my main worry.

These cars are very reliable. I wouldn't spend the money on the warranty. My S4 I just traded in two weeks ago with 78k never needed anything and it was tuned to stage 2 for 60k of those miles. It was the most reliable car I ever owned.

I bought an extended warranty from the dealership I bought my 2012 S4 from back in January of 2017. The car had just under 50,000 KM's/31,000 miles on it, and I got the extended warranty for added peace of mind. It covers the vehicle up to 160,000 KM's/99,500 miles, regardless if that took me five years to reach - or 50.

My driving range is roughly the same as yours as well, and I still have yet to use the extended warranty in any respect...but personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry - regardless of added cost to me.

These are expensive toys from the jump to test your luck with...so by debating whether or not spending a few additional thousands of monies now, rather than later during a massive repair - I'd rather take the safe/preventative route than being caught between a rock and a hard place.

For most of us, we don't have the luxury of leasing/financing these cars and we're buying used anyway...so with the added warranty coverage, I can sleep a little easier at night - knowing I have that added support.

Best of luck with your future intentions!

Since when 78kmiles become high miles? 78kmiles is on average 5 or 6 years of driving. Perhaps what happens at 100-150 kmiles is a better indicator of overall reliability?

I bought my 2015 S4 with 29k miles and have 62k miles now. So far during my ownership I have had to replace water pump, trunk latch, wheel bearing, and tail lamps for leaking.

This is the best car I have owned but it seems too early for those issues mentioned. I would buy warranty if you can afford, unless you want to gamble.

I'd recommend a warranty for sure. Like any Audi these have smaller common maintenance items to expect like thermostat, carbon build up, etc. but the policy is worth it for larger things like possible DSG issues and so on. I spent over 3k for a warranty up to 5years or 100k miles for piece of mind. I'm VERY happy with my DSG S4. It's such a great car.

I bought mine from Carmax and it had some issues but I'm happy that they helped sort it out, as did Audi, and believe it or not, I even had road debris damage the car in December so now my whole front end is refreshed- plus a new windshield. I bought it with 49.5k mileage in October. I'm at 52.7k now and just had the 55k service based on time, not mileage. The car looks and drives perfect. Go for it, but as was said, insure the downside risk of a major failure.

The car has been stage 2 tuned since 16k miles and driven very hard every day without issue.

Ive owned a 2010 and a 2014 and the only issie I had was the T-stat on the 2010. Like any car, with proper maintenance these cars are very reliable. I follow the Audi recommended services and only use OEM parts/fluids. If you can get a good copy of the service history for it, I wouldn't waste money on one of those BS aftermarket warranties.

I have a 2010 Audi S4 with 96k on the dash have owned since 77k and I have done the battery, thermostat, carbon cleaning, pcv, bought some Michelin AS3+ and a dsg flush. The car did have the infamous codes for SAI cleaning which is warrantied by Audi 10 years or 100k miles. I just ordered some 034 motorsports lower control arms and Meyle HD uppers I’m going to install them in a few weeks. I have done 90% of the work by myself. My advice is if you pick up your own tools and work on it don’t get a warranty. If you don’t know what you are doing working on the vehicle buy the warranty. These are expensive cars to own but they drive like no other.
