Question Thoughts on Unitronic Stage 1 ECU Software Upgrade???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am considering going with the Unitronic Stage 1 ECU Software Upgrade for my new 2019 A4, but first wanted to know if anyone else has it? I can't seem to find any reviews online.

Thoughts? Noticeable bump in performance? Does it exhibit any weird shifting behaviors when paired with the stock DSG flash?

    Thanks in advance!

Thoughts? Noticeable bump in power and torque? How well does the stock transmission flash work with it? Any weird behaviors?

    Thanks in advance!
I flashed mine recently to stage 1+ So far I’ve been very happy with the flash, and especially with the mid range power increase.

With regards to the transmission, 2019 models do not have support from unitronic yet, as we have a revised gen 2 DSG transmission. I think the car definitely would benefit from the flash, although I wouldn’t say it’s bad or anything right now, just an occasional rough shift under boost.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the insight!

So overall does it feel night and day faster than stock? Have you timed it all or do you have any acceleration video? Stock 0-60 is around mid 5's and I am hoping to achieve 4.4 secs or better tuned.

You mentioned an "occasional rough shift"... rough shifting reported by several people is one reason I decided to pass on APR's flash, despite having considerably higher published numbers. Hope it isn't too bad.

I wouldn’t say the shifting issue is noticeable or frequent, it could’ve also been just learning to the new setup.

I don’t have a draggy or anything, but I would say yes, your definitely gonna notice a nice bump in power. Also no turbo flutter as reported in the APR tune ;)

Will work on making a video.

Suhweet. And yessss, I totally forgot about the reported turbo flutter with APR. Thanks for reminding me.

Quite frankly... I don't like APR after their tune blew then engine on my new S4 back in 2013. They provided absolutely ZERO support, lied the entire time, and later worked with moderators to repeatedly delete my posts when I simply wanted to share my experience with other forum members. Combine that with the excessive hubris they exhibit to their customers (and dealers) on a daily basis. HARD PASS!

So far all of my communications with UNITRONIC have been great, no attitude and they simply answer your questions without all the smoke and mirrors. It's refreshing.

I had Unitronic stage 1 on my allroad for the better part of a year and a half. There is definitely a noticeable difference in power from stock. You can definitely tell it pulls harder. I love my Unitronic tune and highly recommend it to anyone.

I recently got an Unitronic stage 1, will post a full review soon. I've had it for about 2 weeks. No compressor surge / flutter even with a cold air intake.

The reason I got it is because I wanted a OEM+ tune and not the fastest. I think Unitronic is the lowest torque output of all the tunes for the A4 B9 which is exactly what I wanted, same overall HP though.

It pulls a lot harder, enough for people who were in my car stock to notice. It seems like an OEM+ tune. I think the thing about tunes, very few people get to try more than one so it's hard to say if the others are better but looking at just my experience with Unitronic so far, it feels like OEM style power delivery in terms of smoothness but it packs a lot more of a punch.

That's phenomenal, thanks for sharing. I too am looking for a smooth, refined OEM-like feel, but with more oomph!

I just installed the Unitronic Stage 1 last night and wanted to report back. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Significant improvement!

The car now pulls like a freight train while retaining all the factory smoothness. No turbo flutter or unexpected sounds. The stock DSG programming seems to work very well with the Stage 1, which is welcomed, because my 2019 A4 has the revised DSG, which no one yet seems to make a performance flash for.

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to unlock power, this is it.

Awesome!!! Be sure to put in a request for the DSG flash, I’m sure the more people that request it, the sooner it will happen

Are you stage 2 unitronic and on a B9 A4?? If so I’m sure everyone would be very interested in your experience with it. Will definitely be going at least stage 1 after seeing this great thread.

2018 A4 here with a full Unitronic Stage 2 Setup ECU and TCU (intake, Downpipe, GFB diverter valve, APR intercooler with boost pipes, and turbo muffler delete) its a beast!! pulls ridiculously hard for the is20 turbo and lets me tell you Launch control at 4k rpms setting is just plain ole fun. 0-60 in the 4-4.2 range

I highly recommend Unitronic, John @ Unitronic has been so helpful even though the A4 B9 is likely a small market for them.

Does anyone know how Unitronic compares to any other tunes currently out? In terms of how aggressive it is and how it would perform.

I’m leaning toward them due to their stage 2 TCU. Not many companies currently offer TCU tunes. So I would go full stage 2 ECU and TCU by them. IE does have the ability to run different fueling including race gas which is nice, but again no TCU support which would make a massive difference

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! We're happy to hear that you're enjoying our software.

DL382 GEN2's are a work in progress. Unfortunately no ETA to share at the moment, but your desires are heard loud and clear in this thread.

Our TCU calibrations make a big difference in terms of being able to exceed the torque limitations present in the factory TCU software properly. If a tuner offers ECU software that exceeds the torque limitation in the factory TCU calibrations, I'd recommend asking them how they're handling that.

    John,

In regards to the ECU software does Unitronic have any future plans of offering any other fuel options? A race gas or E85 file? I’m sure it’s a big ask and likely not as much support as the MQB platforms, but I’m sure a lot of folks would spring for that as well. If not, is this something that if I contacted Uni directly we could possibly work on some sort of custom one off file?

I’m just trying to set myself up for support above your average stage 2. A stage 2+ you could call it. I’ll eventually be jumping on the hybrid turbo train once more are readily available as well

I've got Stage 1+ and TCU Stage 2 for my B9 allroad. I freakin love it. Super responsive, rightfully quick, smooth shifts. The car drives 1000x better than before. Every time I punch it, I get a smile on my face. I highly recommend picking one up if you have the means.

Also waiting for the Dl382 gen 2 TCU tune. I also am stage 2 Unitronic right now and love it! I would also be very interested in e85 file or an e30 file like Audi sport b5 said as well. :)

I’m now running stage 1+. Great upgrade. Set tO dynamic sport mode and gear shifting works well with added power. Is there any data on changes aff3cted by TCU tune?

So I'm just freshly tuned on an APR stage 1 tune, and I can confirm that thus far, the compressor surge issue is still present, albeit only in higher gears (ususally 4th or 5th) under heavy load without upshifting. I'll note that I experienced something similar with the NSPM I was running before this w/ an open air intake, and am chalking it up to an inefficient rev range for the load it's experiencing.

That said, the reason I went with APR is because my local shop actually recommended it as the preferred option compared to any of the offerings from Unitronic by comparison, stating that historically, they've had less positive results from them. What truth that holds is anyone's to debate, but I figured I'd toss this in there for anyone on the fence between the two to state that I'm very happy with the newfound power, and time will tell if I decide to switch later down the road.

I just had Stage 1+ installed a few hours ago on my B9 Allroad. It's a 2020 so sadly the TCU upgrade wasn't available but a request has been submitted.

Very happy with the ECU Stage 1+, significant improvement over stock and pulls a lot harder throughout the rev range.

What downpipe did you go with? I'm on the stage 1+ and stage 2 tcu unitronic right now with a cts turbo intake. Contemplating on stage 2 now since you told me your 0-60 range now!

What's your 0-60 on your current setup with Unitronic? I've been reading other people's times and seems like the general consensus is Revo stage 1 gives you a 4.3 sec time and APR stage 1 is 4.4 sec.
