    Brake Grease

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to properly grease the brakes on our cars? And the second question is how precise is the grease specification on these machines? I have heard a wide range of comments all the way from "Dude, brake lubricant is brake lubricant" to "If you use the wrong brake grease on these machines you're brakes will be toast".

Use a good molybdenum high temp grease on the slider pins and you will be fine

I sell grease and oil for a living.

I used 3M silicone paste (08946) for the caliper guide pins and Ate plastilube for the back of the pads and on the guide pins of the caliper carriers (see TSB 2033674/8). Probably would have used Sil-Glyde if the packaged kit from FCP had not included the Ate, which is also a well regarded compound for its relevant uses (ie, nothing with rubber contact), and I had not already had the 3M laying around. As to Sil-Glyde vs Cerami-Glyde, I don't track the thing. I don't need 3000°F resistance, and I'm assuming the Cerami-Glyde is more expensive.

The Audi part for replacement guide pins and boots actually includes a TRW package of grease for the purpose. But no idea what it is, https://germanoem.ca/parts/brakes/ca...8470b-trw.html Audi quotes anti-sieze G 052 560 A2 for the pad backs and carrier pins and lithium lubricant G 052 150 A2 for the caliper pins. But who likes using expensive Audi branded stuff.

Also lithium would have been specked out during design many years ago and lithium has moved into the dark ages of grease.

Permatex #24125, or for you in Canada, Permatex #24126. Same same, its the purple. I use it all day long on customers vehicles and also my own fleet here in MN. I use this product for the slide pins and all moving components in a disc brake system. Biggest areas of concern in a disc brake system in regards to lack of lubrication are the slide pins and the brake pads in the caliper bracket.

Wow okay thanks My Affair. So following up so when you say "...and the brake pads in the caliper bracket" you mean the BACK side of the pad and the short projections on either side of the pad that slide within the caliper then, eh?

i have to say i have used the purple permatex several times and have found it TERRIBLE on the slider pins. Maybe its my environment but the most i can go with that is two years. I find the pins totally seized if i try and go longer than that. ( two of my lower pins were seized even at two years ) I now just put this on the back of the plates to use it up but exclusively use syl glide on the pins and no issues, even through cold slushy Canadian Winters.

    just my experiences.

I did a write up on how to do rear brakes and i specifically had to go back and tell people NOT to use the permatex purple as i felt guilty telling them what i used.
    I do realize YMMV

Hmmm...so My Affair...how would you respond to that?

Sounds like a pretty contentious debate brewing in the high profile world of a-hem brake grease...lol...

Well I don't know if anti-seize, which is what that is, is all that good as a lubricate for something that needs to glide as efficiently as possible. I've always used syl glide on slide pins as well with great success. That's a silicone based lubricate.

ATE Plastilube is the only thing you need for the backs of the pads and hardware. Been using it a decade and never disappoints.

I really like ate products and would have likely tried that if it were readily available..

Jealous...ATE Super Blue was the greatest brake fluid invented, until the morons in government decided arbitrarily (like many other legislative decisions) they didn’t like the color and banned it.

Now we’re stuck with guessing if all the old fluid is out because the color is close to impossible to tell when it’s clear.

Next time you do an order pick some up. The other thing I like about it is that it doesn’t feel “gross” on your hands like grease does. If feels like it wipes off your hands clean and doesn’t get into every groove and is there for days.

I had an old can of the ATE Superblue I just finished using up. Best fluid ever.

Well, it appears the statue is at least 30 years old (https://www.nhtsa.gov/interpretations/nht90-443). That ATE was either ignoring it or intending the stuff for race/off-road use (where the statute doesn't apply) is a who knows. But Continental at some point decided itself to pull it. The statute does allow a color range, though not as stark as was previously possible. Did ATE transition to Super Red and Super Amber? It's not like they didn't have a path if they wanted to take it.
