    5spd Manual Transmission Seals DIY?

While my car is apart and Im waiting on things, I want to replace what I assume are 4 seals in the trans. 2 for the axle flanges, 1 input shaft and 1 Im assuming is for the output shaft or gear selector... the diagram makes its hard to determine.

Seals 9, 10 and 15 in the link.

Looks like I will have to unbolt the 2 rear casings from one another to replace a seal. Can I reseal that with grey RTV?

No need to take any casings apart to do those seals. The shifter shaft seal is a little tricky because of it's small diameter, but they aren't too bad. Remember the 5th seal, that's the output shaft seal (driveshaft output). I think that seal is usually shown on the torsen center diff diagram.

From the diagram I looked at, it made it seem you had to separate the casing, and I could only make out 4 seals.

The diagram will certainly show all the cases separated. That's just to show you all the parts that makeup the widget. But the service manual doesn't require splitting any cases to replace external seals. You've got 5 seals. 2 axle outputs, 1 driveshaft output (**Only if quattro**), 1 input shaft, and 1 shifter shaft. Like I said, if you want to see the rear output shaft seal on a diagram, it will be the diagram that shows the torsen center differential and prop shaft flange and such. It's #15 in this diagram:

Ok, I believe I found the right part numbers for everything. I was looking for the output shaft seal in the transmission diagram, not the differential one.

    Shifter Rod Seal - 012301457C 16x24x6
    Input Shaft Seal - 016311113B 25x40x8
    Axle Flange Seal x2 - 016409399B 45x60x8
    Output/Driveshaft Seal - 01A409400B
