I bought a cheap eBay Android head unit - Video

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I have been wanting one of these Android head units for a while. After researching, I decided that I wasn't going to spend a lot on this upgrade, so my goal was to go as cheap as possible.

This was listed on eBay for $380 and I offered $330 shipped and it was accepted. I ordered it on April 10th, and it arrived today. Seller was quick to communicate what he needed and after I sent him a picture of my dash I had a tracking number within an hour.

The install is straight forward, and this unit runs extremely well. I like everything about it so far.

    Some highlights about this:

    1. Super easy to install.
    2. Climate control comes up on the screen when you use it so you don't have to go to the stock screen.
    3. It tells me if a door is open.
    4. moves much faster than I thought it would being a 2gb/32gb system
    5. video is smooth.
    6. sound quality is superb.
    7. call quality is great - I think it may use the stock audi setup, as my BT connects to it.

I have no complaints so far - I really enjoy it.

I also installed the backup camera. I got this one for $22 on ebay - not $11 on Amazon - I buy too much stuff to keep track

What I like about this camera is that it fits perfectly. One downside is that it's an LED, so it doesn't match the other side.

Looks nice, seems like a credible alternative to RSNAV at a much more palatable price. I do have a few questions though!

I noticed when you're in the Audi interface the right side of the screen shows the android unit's splash screen. is it possible to have an app display on that portion of the screen while in the audi interface? Like have waze displaying on the android side while the Audi radio is displaying and playing from left/main side?

Does it boot into the Audi system or the Android system, and can you choose? Can you operate the system via the audi's multi media buttons/wheel? And is it possible to change the Q5 graphic to an A4 haha

    Thanks again for posting!

As far as changing the splash screen, I do not think this is possible.

It boots up where you left off. So if you're in the audi interface when you turn off, it will be there when you turn it back on. If you turn it off while in the Android, thats where it will be when you turn it on.

You cannot change the Q5. It doesn't look like you can change the interface at all. I believe it's fixed.

All steering wheel buttons function 100% perfect.

The fast boot feature is great. It has like zero boot time.

It's no problem. I like being the guinea pig to buy the cheaper stuff to see how it performs. For what I paid, I'm stoked. This has everything I want and I could not be happier. Paying only $330 makes it all the more sweet.

Amazon carries a trunk handle camera that integrates better than the license plate light.

Hey Daniel, thanks for the tip.

Actually, this was due to me disconnecting and reconnecting while powered up. As you know, this will cause problems. After I reset it with Vag-Com with everything connected, the errors went away. TPMS has been on though since I upgrade my wheels. Got a fix for that one?

    It may come back.
If so, 2.7k ohm bridge may be required.
If doesn't come back, it's good.

Changing wheel size usually doesn't lit up tpms unless you are gone more than 2" up/down.

Likely this is triggered by either of following reasons.

    A. Air bag indicator is not fixed yet - if so, air bag warning will come back.

    B. TPMS data saved on the radio was lost - it does happen if radio was completely detached forawhile.

Try to record the TPMS data using the origonal radio's tpms menu and it should be gone. If comes back, then it's A case.

I believe the 2009 has the actual TPMS sensors. If the upgraded wheels don’t have the sensors in them you most likely won’t be able to get that light off without them.

This is the camera I’m using.

Yeah I know, I was just messing around about the TPMS light. I have a ticket in to ross tech to see if they can help me because I cannot get the long coding to work to disable the TPMS. I'm trying to use the method that is on one of the latest threads in the A4 tech forum. This light has been on since I put on the wheels, it has nothing to do with the stereo.

Yeah sounds like a great value, looks like taking a chance paid off!

My only concern with these android based units is that I'm afraid they'll slow down over time. I remember seeing similar setups advertised for the E60 BMWs and boy did they seem to get laggy, perhaps that's no longer a concern though as I'd imagine the tech has evolved substantially.

I think this gets on my mod wish list!

Got rid of the TPMS light with the how-to in this thread. Works like a top. You can see where a member told me how to bypass the security clearance issue I was having with Vag Com.

Just as FYI, I noticed today as I was driving and using the navigation that when you go back to the main screen, the navigation will miniaturize and stay in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. So you can be doing other things in the Android interface and still see your nav. However, I noticed that if you do the same thing but go to the Audi interface, the navigation will not appear in that space, which was disappointing.

    Looks good!
How is the radio reception? I have yet to experience one of these Chinese radios with decent radio reception. But if the sound quality is OK and you only stream, then I guess it doesn't matter.

So, this is completely a touch screen unit, correct? Or do radio controls work well with it?

It uses the factory radio connections for all of that.

It doesn't affect anything really because judging from the wiring all it does is connect the factory LVDS to the android screen and everything for radio and oem functions come through the radio and the media comes through the AMI. I don't use auxiliary though, I use my tune2air so that must be connected to get any sound while on "media" from the factory head unit.

I read a lot about noise on other units and I'm wondering if that's cause people use aux. Maybe using the tune2air is a good fix.

I bought one of these units too! Your video states exactly what I've been finding as well, especially on your point about the different price points on these.

My only qualm with mine is that the mount is a little crooked, so I had to use a spacer when mounting the monitor to the mount, not too big of a deal.

I also installed Car Play and replaced the cigarette lighter with 2 USB ports.

I'll get some video later today!

Yes, and that's why I posted this video. There are other popular units that are double the price and what I wanted to see was what is the difference really? The issue I have with some of the other units is that they're priced high and being touted as "superior" to alternatives, but the feedback states otherwise. I would say that people who paid extra to avoid issues have paid that and have not avoided any issues and got essentially the same system. You can see in Daniels RSNAV 2 how do you like it thread where we had a back and forth. I rolled the dice on the cheaper unit and I am glad to say that I think I was correct in what I had a hunch on all along. This unit will perform just the same and whatever issues it has aren't as bad because at least I didn't pay $700 for it. I paid $330 shipped and I couldn't be happier. Whatever issues I have will be easier to swallow at this price point as opposed to "thinking" I'm getting a better unit for double the price and sitting in my car dealing with issue after issue.

Can you share some pics if you have any as to how you routed your USB?

Two gripes I had with this unit:
The GPS antenna is just barely long enough. It is a PITA to get it connected because it's 1-2" shorter than it needs to be.
The USB cables are too short to route through the tunnel armrest into the center console.

I routed the USBs through the AMI plastic housing box in the glove box (where the little slide-out shelf is adjacent to the AMI, which required cutting/extending the square opening that is already there).

The USB routing I did was temporary until I can get USB extenders, as I did not want to route them to the cigarette lighter directly underneath the HVAC controls. I want to run those cables into the center console. Is that what you did, or did you go below HVAC?

Indeed, you have a point. I agree that functionality may be more or less the same.

Nevertheless, let me justify why RSNav is expensive compared to 330 usd unit because I don't want to be blamed as if I am selling 330usd worth device at 650 usd.

    - Your device has the resolution of 1280x480 whereas Rsnav S2 has 1920x720.

    - 4 core 1.2ghz CPU vs 8 core 1.8Ghz CPU

    - 2GB ram/32GB rom vs 4GB/64GB rom

    - Android 6.0 vs Android 7.1

Maybe it's meaningless spec for some, but these differences make the cost different.

I don't want to argue about any point of veiw and I respect your choice, but I hope you understand that my concerns as well.

Not sure about you guys, but the back of the console storage area had a blank spot where it looked like a higher trim hay have had a USB port. I popped out the cover and used a Dual usb plug that fit perfectly in there. I’ll link below. Then I used male to male usb extension to connect to the stereo.

Are you talking about where the cigarette port is in the center console, or another opening?

    - Your device has the resolution of 1280x480 whereas Rsnav S2 has 1920x720.

    - 4 core 1.2ghz CPU vs 8 core 1.8Ghz CPU

    - 2GB ram/32GB rom vs 4GB/64GB rom

    - Android 6.0 vs Android 7.1

Maybe it's meaningless spec for some, but these differences make the cost different.

I don't want to argue about any point of veiw and I respect your choice, but I hope you understand that my concerns as well.

I don't want to derail the thread but I will say that the impression I get from your marketing on this site is that one of your selling points is that your system is superior to the others moreso than just hardware. I think that at your price point all the bugs need to be worked out and I think your customers would agree. This means no airbag lights, no distortion and elimination of all the other bugs that come on the lesser spec'd cheaper units. That is just my opinion, but we've already had that talk in another thread :)

My opinion in your points about my products are

Airbag light - as you said, it's just when you power on the car while the airbag indicator is detached. Also, initially, we shipped wrong indicator and we shipped replacement with DHL.

Distortion - there is no sound distortion, but only for concert model, if the user plug anything to ami, it gets ground loop. So we ask radio coding. In your application, you said you are using tune2air to get sound. What about if you plug a ami to aux adapter to activate aux?

Bugs - people complains about MPH, 'F, Gallon display is somewhat mixed and we are working on it. In your device, it's fixed with Km/h, liter, isn't it? Indeed, since our product is twice expensive we've got it to right and we will. But in my opinion, if you call what you have irrelevant and what I have is fault, then it's not fair.

Also, not only the hardware specs but also my product indeed have advantages like obd II BT support, supporting system integration with the factory BT, customizable car images and so on.

'Twice capacity, Better resolution, more performance and variety applications but not twice price' - why not?

Again I don't want to get this thread derailed either and I believe on your purchase has good price point for what it is doing and stability and here goes my congratulations.

However, because you mentioned me any my product in your writing first and questioning what the real differences are, so I am here to say what I think.
I wished you did not compare or mention my product in the first place as I have no problem with yours, but then again I don't want to be remain tagged as a bad seller offering 330usd unit 650 usd.

I sincerely hope this is last time that I am defending myself here. Once again it's free competitive market and people will take what they like. You have your freedom of speech as well as I do, so I came to defend myself where I and my product were called explicitly.

    Hope this clarify my intent.

I bought a similar unit off aliexpress in October, has the same interface and everything. In terms of the Q5 image there’s actually a hidden menu you can access that you can change the splash screen and the Q5 car to an A4. This is the YouTube video that seller sent me when I asked how to change it:

    https://youtu.be/Its4hLC7BCg

In terms of back up camera, if you don’t mind me asking how exactly did you install it? Did you tap or solder into reverse light or use wires in the back only? Only asking because when I installed mine, the camera would trigger when in reverse and display an image but when I put it into gear the camera would stay on and I can’t get out of it. Thanks

    I created a video here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpRMOL1jR3w&t=7s

Sorry for the uncoordinated 10 min ramble... hopefully there are some useful tips.

The USB thing was key for me. I routed the 2 USB cables from the nav system to the glove box, then ran the 2 USB cables from the cig lighter to the glove box as well, and that's where all my connections are. I did this so I could plug the Car Play unit, and any other intermediate units in without ripping apart the dash. Here's the USB cig lighter insert I bought.

My unit has 2gb of RAM, 32gb of storage, and is runnning Android 8.1. Yours looks to have an updated interface. What version of Android are you running?

I didn't have the extension issue with the GPS receiver. In the video I show where I routed mine.

    That's Merryway's psuedo Android 8.1(as android 6.0). There are 2GB/32GB or 4GB(3GB available)/64GB and low res(1280x480) or high res(1920x720)

Their high version costs slight less the same as our S2.

Rsnav S2 is exclusive to RSNAV ourselves except China market.

Were you able to make that work? I am able to access the menu on my screen. My screen doesn't say "About" it says "System info." I can access that screen, which is super cool - thanks for sharing. I can also select the A4 lines but it doesn't change the image on my screen. I was able to change my logo boot up screen to the Earth.

To answer your version question - mine states Android 10. You have a lot of differences between yours and mine. I love the knob that they gave you - I would love to have that. Or at the very least, I wish that the radio knob could have been integrated to function the same way. My other Android head unit came with the same Wifi extender - this one did not. Although, I have zero connectivity problems, so the built in WIfi antenna must be ok. I also am willing to bet that you got the same GPS cable that I got with my other unit, which is so long that it can be routed anywhere in the vehicle, even in the rear. The one that came with mine I would guess is about 70" long. I routed exactly as you did and it just barely made it. When I bolt it down, the unit has to be butted up super close to the mount. I am pretty anal though about centering so I had to have it directly in the middle of the windshield - I couldn't have it offset. Would have drove me nuts.

So the camera has yellow and black rca's on it. The yellow rca runs to the back of the head unit, and the wires coming off the black rca go to the reverse light power/ground. I just wired those to the reverse lights. I went into the driver side tail light.
