    Generic Parts List

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,
Sorta feel like I'm at a cross roads (again?) with my B5. I don't want to get rid of it... but the timing doesn't seem like its ever going to get better for trying my hand at something well above my pay grade.

We're all self isolating which means I've got the time to pull/rebuild my engine. Its possible that getting the various parts could be tough. But time was always the biggest issue.

I've been searching, and I haven't found it. I realize that everyone's builds are unique and there's no 'set' list of components.

But I thought before I get busying trying to compile one I'd see if there was something to start on.

What I'm after is a list of things that you need when pulling the engine.
    Gaskets, belts, hoses, fittings, etc.
Not planning on going crazy. Just replacing my stock turbo's with something... looking to upgrade for sure but nothing crazy. Maybe just the K04's. I'm guessing those will come in a kit with everything need. But all my vacuum lines are original and starting to look suspect.

If I decide to start... fair warning. I'm probably going to be pestering the group every session.

    Happy Spring!

So it's a lot of checking to see what's fucked while your in there. These cars are 20 years old now. What you need and what someone else needs can be very different. Also the last time gaskets/belts/ect were replaced obviously matters. If you just did a timing belt and VCGs, then there's no need to do them again. So bare bones, not counting any parts you want to replace/upgrade:

    -Turbo Install Kit
    -Oil
    -Coolant
    -PS fluid

That's pretty much it. But I can tell you you're going to find a bunch of stuff that needs replaced. Just pull it out, and make a list of what it needs. Are you doing a turbo swap or motor build? First you said rebuild, but then just swapping turbos? 2 different animals. I wouldn't open up the motor at all unless you're putting rods in it. These cars still have the cross hatch in the cylinders clear as day with 300k miles. You have a factory built motor with all tried and tested OEM parts. Don't change that because of boredom.

ya, the last time I was in there I could tell that a lot of the vacuum tubes if I pull them off might not go back on. I had to use some jbweld putty to secure a sensor in one of those plastic air tubes...
So all those 'known' weak spots seems like a good time to replace.
I did my tb a while back, but for the $250 the kit costs.. seems like it'd be foolish not to just put on a new belt/etc while you're in there.

the things I was thinking about were all the gaskets (is there a list of them all?) I've done the valve cover gaskets but I did them while the engine was in and some of the parts at the back... well, seems like it would be much easier to get it 100% if it were on a stand.

all new fluids.. silicone hoses maybe?

There's a fairly drastic oil leak somewhere. right now I"m hoping its the turbo's themselves.

But mostly I was looking for the part numbers too... so rather than call the parts place and be like 'you know, the spider hose on a 2001 b5?" I can be all "I need part number 1001928830-audi please"

Pull the motor, go through it and see what it needs. I wouldn’t just guess at it beforehand. All of these parts are available online by description. Not sure why you need part numbers.

And all of this because you were just doing a timing belt job.... and then came... well while I am in there I might as well fix.......

ya, that's exactly what I was after.
my wallet almost ran away when I saw it but I think it looks like death by a thousand cuts? tons of little costs?
I see some big ones there but I'd probably (for this bit) only be looking at the first three section.

    Thanks!

Roughly $3700 for the first 3 sections, but that's with 2x genuine cam adjusters ($545 each back then) and I used mostly Audi & OE parts.

Grab the big ticket items... turbos, piping,SMIC, clutch, LWFW, hardware, gaskets for valve covers, change cam chain shoes, cam plugs and seals, you’ll need a few coolant hoses that are soft, maybe remove SAI, clean spider hose/ vents or replace with catch can, motor mounts maybe.... and go from there... most parts are only a few days a way via UPS so no need to get them ALL. You’ll be ordering stuff you didn’t know you needed anyways. I just pulled my motor for the first time last week and doing similar build now. Mr. Ballou will walk you right through the removal and install, just check his YouTube channel.

Thanks Justin, you did a great job with all those videos :P My first German car and its a joy work on, esp after working on American Diesels the past decade.

As others said, check was broken when you open it up and start replacing from there. Your information indicated that you are in Canada as am I. Our dollar is currently on par with toilet paper and that will make parts procurement even more expensive. I tried to spend in Canada where I could, however, a lot of stuff comes from American vendors (conversion, duties, shipping, etc)

I just finished a similar process but as you as said every build is different. I replaced everything glaringly obvious and some things that didn't pass the sniff test. If I couldn't get to it when the car was back together I did my best to replace it. I stopped keeping score at a certain point for my own sanity but I would guess that I'm well into the $$$$ bracket for odds and ends.

There are some big turbos for sale within Canada within various marketplace. If cost is an issues and you don't mind gambling, this could be an option.

Money is a consideration for sure. But when I think about the money its less a concern about dropping a few k on the car. That was the main point that 'people' made sure I understood when I fell in love with it.

    its a money pit.
But I haven't really experienced that to be honest. For sure, I've dropped a lot of money into it... but no more (less?) than the family vehicle that we take to the $tealership for maintenance.

My brain naturally pushes back at the "if you put 4k into the car, that's more than its worth an you'll likely never get that back" but the other half of me knows its not ROI I'm after.

Might just take that approach then. Pull the engine and start a tear down and start ordering the parts as I go along... that first step is the one that scares me though.
