    Ceramic Window Tint questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I think I am gonna bet my windows tinted and had a question on ceramic tint.

Everything I have read is it will help with the in-car temps significantly. For the local shop I am looking at using they are charging an extra $70 for ceramic. Is it worth that extra $70?

For those that have had both types how much better at heat reduction is the ceramic?

I live in Az, so we need as much heat rejection as possible. Let me just say, when its hot... it's hot! It doesnt matter what you put on the car, it will be hot inside when you get in it.

On the last 4 cars, I used 3M Crystalline film with great success, with a 97% heat rejection My C7 A6 is going in next week, and I'm going to try Expel Prime XR Plus, with a 98% heat rejection (and substantially cheaper than the 3M product).

In my opinion, it doesnt really matter what brand. Where I started noticing a HUGE difference was when I started doing the entire front windshield. Not the silly looking strip up top that a lot of people do, but full coverage.

I think it is, personally. I have also had my windshield tinted (illegal in my state).

With ceramic, it will still be quite toasty in the dead of summer when you get in. But I've found the car cools significantly faster with ceramic tint than without. No other real appearance differences I can see, although you also have the option to go very light if that's something your state harps on (e.g., front windows not allowed to be tinted, etc).

Yeah, pay the extra $70 for ceramic. It’s the best tint type available on the market, and you’re only going to pay that extra $70 once so you might as well.

IMO, it is worth the extra money. I have tinted all my vehicles dating back to the early 2000's and used both Carbon and Ceramic. Carbon itself has come a long way - less fading, better quality - but Ceramic's coloring, IR/UV blocking and in-car temp reduction abilities puts it above. I have a kid now, so the IR/UV blocking properties is a no brainier for me right now in my life.

I haven't done tests, but they claim a 60% IR heat difference over Carbon. Probably a fair amount of degrees difference.

I just had mine tinted with 3M IR Ceramic and it's amazing. They did demonstration where they took a heat lamp and put different types of tint in front of it and I placed my hand behind the tint. Heat came through all the tint but the ceramic instantly blocked the heat (and apparently 99% UV rays). I did it all around, including the windshield. Well worth it.

IIRC, I did 35% which, when combined with the stock few percent, is closer to 30%, and 50% on the windshield.

I second everyone's comments about spending the extra on ceramic tint. It's a huge benefit and one that's very underrated, I have Llumar Air80 on the windshield and Llumar IRX 20 on the rest on the C7.5. Don't skip the front windshield since that's where the majority of heat comes into the car. Going with something like Air80 or 3M Crystalline 70 is optically clear but cuts a ton of heat.

My C6 has Crystalline 70 on the windshield and 3M 15% on the sides as well and you can't go wrong with high quality tint.

Yeah, one of the huge benefits on ceramic is how clear it is without sacrificing the UV and IR rejection properties. Enough that I've got some to put on the windows of my house!

It is well worth the extra money and stick with Xpel Prime XR or 3M Crystaline. You can get a similar performance with non-ceramic but you have to go illegal dark for that. In my case, I didn't want to go too dark so I did Ceramic Xpel Prime XR on the sides and back. I wanted to do the windshield and was recommended and also read that for the really light tints it is better to go Crystaline so I did 70% Crystaline on the windshield. You can't tell that it is tinted but it makes a huge difference. The inside temps are not going to change when you leave the car parked under the sun all day as the temperature builds up over time. But it will help if you leave it under the sun for like an hour. You will feel lower temperate and the surfaces will be cooler to the touch. Where I mostly notice it is driving, before the sun used to sting the skin, now I feel just a warm and mild radiation coming through the windows, the AC cools the car faster and operates the fans at lower speed once the temp stabilizes inside the car.

    Window tint (2).jpg

Went 35% front sides and 20% rear and back window. Car is a filthy pig at the moment so don't have a better shot with the tint yet.

my thoughts if you live in the south or Texas somewhere where it's crazy hot worth the money. IF your trying to save the $70 don't do it. For me I live in CT I did opt for it cause winter time I prefer to let the heat in...lol sounds lame but truth. It's marginal but worth it if you live in crazy hot like Arizona lol
