    AMD Supercharger Build

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so I thought I ought to start a build thread for this...

    Some background — this is my 2nd b7 RS4. I had a PB ‘07 for about 6 1/2 years (‘10 - ‘16).

I jumped around with other cars, but ultimately could not find a daily driver that had the V8 grunt, 6MT, and utility of the RS4. Thus, I started looking. @russcars mentioned that @b6bydesign might be looking to sell his ‘08 Ti Suzuka exclusive. We started talking, one thing led to another, and wallah!

I’ve always wanted to supercharge an RS4, but have never gotten comfortable with the available kits. I was recently made aware of a Group Buy for the HP kit from AMD. I pulled the trigger and here we are.

Parts arrived at SLM Auto Care (great VAG shop here in Omaha) and the project began.

A couple things you all should know...

    1) I’m the first to admit, and have no problem doing so, that I am NOT a gear head. I do not know much when it comes to engines. I hate it, and blame my father...ha. Now that I have a family and a demanding job, I don’t have the time to learn, either. Therefore, a forum like Audizine, and chatting with you all, is a huge part of how I get comfortable doing the modifications to all of my vehicles. It’s always fun to try and learn what I can, but ultimately I have to lean on the experts when it comes to the work.

Had a carbon clean done while the valves were exposed.

Here is a ‘before’. Keep in mind, I had just received a carbon clean 7k MILES earlier...pretty in sane how quickly the carbon build in these engines.

Here’s one from before the original carbon clean. I don’t think the car had ever received one (30k miles, ish). We dyno’d the car PRIOR to this original carbon clean, and the car put down about 270whp...

I never did dyno AFTER, but it was apparent that the car gained significant power.

    OK...back to the build...
We immediately ran into a problem when the heat exchanger we received didn’t have the proper tabs for the attachment.

Reached out to AMD, and they sent a replacement...

    Installation continued to progress...

...but then had an issue when the supercharger belt kept walking off of the SC. It was almost as if the SC pulley was too far in, and not properly aligned with the crank/rest of pulleys.

Once again, we reached out to AMD and they explained that this new batch of pulleys hadn’t been used, and that they were smaller than what they typically use because of their octane (AMD is located in Washington state).

After they completed a mock up on a shop car, they recognized the offset was about .133”. They immediately sent us a shim to correct the issue.

In the meantime of waiting on some of these parts, I had ordered a new diffuser and skirts for the car. Had those thrown on, and they look incredible!

Got the shim installed and the car was FINALLY ready to be flashed (2 weeks later, due to these issues).

The shop brought the car up to temp, and then shut it back down to do a little QC before really ramping things up for the flash.

And, to our disgust, we had another issue....

There was coolant escaping the manifold via a bad weld...

UGH. So, we reached back out to AMD after sending them pictures and videos of the issue. AMD pressure checks the cores to 30psi with nitrogen after the end caps are welded into the manifold. Evidently, every now and then it can create an external leak . Nonetheless, they acknowledged it as a failed part, and they’re currently in the process of sending us a replacement manifold.

That’s where things are at. Will update as things hopefully progress...

I just wanted to ask the difficulty of putting the belt on? My belt in my VF kit was so tight I needed my daughter to hold the tensioner at full lock while I threaded the idler pulley onto the car. the tensioner currently sits at 95% to full lock

Yikes, that will hold the belts on nice and tight but will also cause unnecessary main bearing wear.

I verified the belt with VF and thats their correct belt. I have also seen other installation of other kits installed in professional shops and the tensioner is also in the same exact postion. I am assuming the tensioner might be in a slightly different position while the car is running but its almost impossible to see with that big 4.2 in a small oven

I have been doing my homework on this setup for the past 2 years and I have never once heard of a slipping belt or bearing issues... At most there was heat soak issues but they have upgraded their heat exchanger and water pump over the years

I found him on IG. JamStyling on Facebook. I have some skirts that still need thrown on, too.

I did have to re-paint them as the quality was not great upon receipt.

Looks great. Diffuser and sides is carbon weave or plastic painted in high gloss black? If you got them again? Would you recommend to order them raw and paint them to not have to strip them? Good luck e your project man!

Nice and welcome back to the b7 corner!! Spot on with the supercharger; unlucky on that faulty weld but it's good to see that AMD is standing behind their fault and making the best to get it sorted for ya!

I think I'll be opting for a TTS charger for my build shortly.

Venom, hope all is well with you bud! Yes, I read great things about the TTS one as well and looks like numbers are similar, the dyno sheet on their website show 543 PS on the wheels and basically where I was at, 543 WHP - graph miss-labeled (1PS = 0.986 HP) w 92 us (95 euro). Or I can load up my suitcase again if you go AMD like last time I traveled w parts for you :). Also thanks for all the great write ups you do, and always feel like I need to bring mine out to the track after I read you post... and bet you are hell of a good driver out there these days. Cheers man!

Ey bud, long time no hear!! Doing good, family's safe during the C-19 shit going on. Hope you and the missus are OK as well!!
Thanks for the reassurance on the power! Originally I was looking at APR as they are literally next door to me in Austria. 1/2 hour drive from my house. But after reaching out to them a few months back I learned they don't sell the SC kit anymore... just my luck. I'll be sourcing the TTS from a local shop and as the manufacturer is "local" (EU) it is easier to get spares and a warranty in case anything goes sideways.

If none of the above options would be viable of course I'd hit you up and we do the old "spare-parts suitcase" to the EU import way. Hah!

Thanks! I try to put as much time as I can spare in the seat, be it my car, a rented racecar, gokart or whatever with wheels and steering. You'll need to make an Euro tour sooner or later so we can head our on some track together! Or I come over to the US as planned for so long. Was asked to manage the Orlando Airport expansion recently but had to decline as I'm tied up in other project work in Russia at the moment. But I think eventually I'll land on your side of the Atlantic.

    OP sorry for going offtopic!

The car is DONE! And holy smokes...what an absolute game changer.

The car ended up putting down 453whp and 428 lb./ft. The dyno is a brand new Mustang Dyno. Before my car had its very first carbon clean, it put down 278whp (about 8 months ago). So -- I'm quite happy with the results, as that's a 175whp gain from its baseline.

A quick video of the pull:

Sorry -- forgot to respond to your question. YES, I would definitely order them raw. I actually had to sand and re-paint both the diffuser and the skirts. Quality was pretty mediocre when I first received them. They're much better now that they've been cleaned up and re-painted.

I have been doing my homework on this setup for the past 2 years and I have never once heard of a slipping belt or bearing issues... At most there was heat soak issues but they have upgraded their heat exchanger and water pump over the years
I like the vf kit and definitely would consider it if I owned an s4. I guess I was just wondering if anyone else had had any previous issues. From my understanding the more tension/load you have on the belt the more wear on the main bearings you will see, if anyone has a better understanding of this I would love some insight. Also OP if you have any chance to run against another RS with the apr 1740 kit I’d love to see the results.

It's quite a color. Some days looks plain jane white, and then at times it has a very obvious grayness. It's very unique.

It's an absolute beast. Pulls really hard all the way to redline. 5k - 8k is a treat.

Going back to the shop next week for some street logs now that I've had a couple tanks of 93 through the car. Hoping to squeeze another 20whp out of it but we'll see. I never did a dyno post-carbon clean. Only prior to, and then after the kit. An N/A car with a fresh carbon clean, though, should probably do about 320whp.

    Well...today didn’t go as planned...

While the wheels are absolutely sick, the fitment was less than ideal. Poking to the point I had to abort.

    Specs were:
    20x10 et22
    Hankook V12’s 275/30/20.
    KWv3 coilovers

I’m thinking I need to go to a 265/30/20 as the tire is bulging and poking outside the fender.

    To be continued!
