    CV boot sealing.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm working on the TT and I know this is the A4B8 forum, but that forum seems dead and the folks here seem to be life long Audi fans. So I hope to get an answer here. Help please!

The outer cv boot is torn and while the axle is out I want to do the inner boot so the axle will be gtg. The inner cv boot has the boot attached to a metal flange. The CV joint is then capped by a metal housing on the other side. No gaskets. This looks simmilar to the B8 driveshaft to diff attachment, but the B8 driveshaft has a gasket on the flange.
So Audi calls out a sealant on the metal cap and I beleve it is D454300A2. This is a solvent free "hausing sealing compound" . In true Audi fassion it is around $90 for a tube.
Does anyone know if there is a permatex equivalent? Is this just an anerobic sealant? Looking not to spend $100 on a tube of sealant that will go bad before I need to use it again.

What is the year and engine? Looking at a CCTA TT shows similar to what I would expect for the B8, just grease in the inner and outer joints, no sealant. I see reference to D454300A2 on some of the axle pages, but they have no part number, such as "not for this model". I don't have the repair manual for the suspension for whatever TT type you have, so no idea if the sealant is clearly called for in the procedures. No such sealant in the B8 A4 manual.

i would suggest poking around forums in the UK . they sold a lot of TTs there and i hear the forums are much more active than ours.
personally i would throw a gasket on it one fits .. if a little grease leaches out no big deal .. its a CV , its gonna happen ...

Its a CBRA KDE. This is a 3.2 with the dsg. The pn per the dealer is 1K0498201A. Looking through elsawin, and based on the sealing cap, I think this is the 108mm od cv joint. And it calls out a sealant. The cap rides against the diff flange and is in the torque parh so I want to get this right.

Elsawin only calls out a sealant and the link is broken. I think that is the right pn based on 7zap list. And I am sure I found it on some audi parts diagram too.

2nd edit: boot pn is 1K0498201A

Ok, finally with you. So an axle that's styled like our rear axles, not our front axles. And yeah, now looking at the rear axle repair manual section, it talks about the dismantling and the sealing of the inner assembly. Dealing with these inner joints seem like a damn hell pita compared to the ones on our front axles.

When looking at the ETKA page for a second gen TT with 3.2L VR6 and DSG, it shows the same style as our front axles, and no reference to sealant. But looking at the other page option, we see the round joint with cap style, and the reference to the sealant D 454 300 A2. But maybe you were talking about a rear axle all along? Lack of specifics in the opening post.

This is talking about the rear axles on the B8 S4/5, but of relevance: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...=1#post8265909

Maybe drop an email to Permatex and ask them what they would consider equivalent for the use scenario.

Sorry, it is the front TT axle, I was using the rear B8 driveshaft as an example folks might be familiar with. The B8 uses the puck style cv joint on the driveshaft.
I reached out to a buddy who is a Porshe fanatic and he finally got back to me. He said to use the permatex right stuff which is low voc and classified as solvent free. Older Porshe cars had a similar setup on their CV shafts.
BTW, I kept digging for a few hours on the D454300A2 sealant but it was mostly a dead end - found a msds sheet but it is in Polish and I cant make heads or tails of what its saying.

FWIW, I've driven Quattros for 30 or more years, a couple of them well over 200K miles. I've had some outter CV boots go bad, even had a rear outter go bad once, never had an inner go bad. They get less weather and they don't flex nearly as much as the front outters.

    @mtroxl
Well the goal is to get this car to 200k miles. (Audi gods willing)
But if the inners just don't break I will leave it alone. At least for now.

I'm at 205k on my quattro. Front left outer is the only boot that's leaked so far. I bought a used OE axle for $99 to replace it rather than bother with all the parts and grease and work (and buying a torque wrench compatible Oetiker pliers which I do not currently have). Minus the time to get the car up and down, it took about 10 minutes messing with the bolts and maybe 30 seconds actually replacing the axle.

Wouldn't bother with the inner boot, they pretty much never tear. Fix what's broken and move on. Or just replace the axle.
