Can someone explain to me why the 2.0T B7 A4 sounds better than the 2.0T B8 A4?

The B7 sounds, somewhat, dare I say exotic or maybe the better term would be "European". To me the B8 sounds more like a Honda.

    What gives?

Noise regulations, different valve tech, different exhaust?

Its like a WRX can sound fantastic or terrible with different setups.

my dad just bought a b8.5 2 days ago. that thing is super quite even on full throttle. it's faster stock to stock but the engine was muted at 6k rpms. on my b7 stock everything at 6k rpms sounds good. like a real european car. the new 2.0ts are soooo quite i hate that.

Europen and global Noise abatement laws.. Thats pretty well it , they get tighter and tighter and tighter every year..

My sons B7 sounds more aggressive than my B 8.5, but that is also because his exhaust is 8 year older and is rotting out .. so there is that ...

yeah those 4 cylinder dont sound good at all.

This is why I hate seeing people with fart cans on automatic B7.

Muffler and resonator deletes on stock exhaust sounds like ass also.

Its subjective, but not much 4cylinder sound great.

Some sound 'fine' tho : sr20de (t), 2.5 boxer, honda F20. IMo most honda B series sound shit, but lot of honda fan will disagree. Exhaust law in my place are due to honda engine anyway, lol .

I might think the best option on B7 is : big piping all around, hfc, big resonator, stock mufflers.
I'm on the CTS turbo back, and starting to be annoyed about this exhaust.

I’m specifically talking about 2.0 FSI.

    I got it.

All I'm saying , in general , 4 cylinder are too small to make sweet sound anyway. Once again, its subjective. Probably someone , somewhere, will like more 4cyl sound than any v10

5-valve 1.8ts had a bit of a unique growl that I liked. The FSI engines are distinctive, sort of a low rumble that is pretty easy to pick out off a crowd. But I'm not sure it sounds "good". I'd take a Fiat 500 Abarth exhaust note any day over my b7. Those things sound awesome!

Just a theory here. The exhaust manifold on the newer engines is integrated and thus very short. That could make a huge difference.

Another theory. Maybe your stock exhaust is worn out internally. These systems are very tuned to the car. It could have the right shapes and sizes from a design standpoint but with the material in the mufflers worn compared to newer.
