What Oil Are You Using in your A5 (B9)?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking to do my oil changes on my 2018 A5. I notice the manual states that I can use THREE different weights?

    0W30
    5W30
    5W40

Which do you use? I am living in the midwest - cold winters, hot summers.

It mentions using Castrol OE performance which appears to be discontinued or near impossible to find?

What oils are you using? Ravenol? Pentosin? Mobil 1?

Check the sticker under the hood. It's probably more accurate than the manual. You also need an oil that meets the VW/Audi spec listed on that same sticker.

Most users are going to fall into the operating temperature range that will use 5w-40.

As for brand, my personal preference is MolyGen from Liqui Moly.

    +1,

Check under the hood oil sticker, this A5 2.0T may require VW 504 specification (which is generally 5W-30 or 0w-30 weight).

Apparently the A4 2.0T (B-cycle) engine requires VW 508 oil.

Your sticker may have different numbers, but should look like this (this is what it shows on on my RS5 2.9T):

From MY 2019 Maintenance Intervals - USA:

    "502 00 / 505 00 / 505 01
    – Castrol EDGE® Professional® 5W40
    508 00 / 509 00
    – Castrol EDGE® Professional® 0W20 Long Life IV
    504 00 / 507 00 Diesel Oil
    – Castrol EDGE® Professional® 5W30 LL03"

Thanks everybody. I grabbed the last of Castrol Edge OEM Professional I could find on the whole internet...

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$65 for 6 quarts. Doubt it is worth it. I think I am going to switch to Mobile 1 after this. I even called the Audi dealer and they said VW/Audi switched over to an oil made by Mobile 1.

    https://www.shopdap.com/ge555401qdsp-vw-audi.html

They recommended I use 5w40 (I'm in Cleveland).

I've always been a GM guy so my go-tos were always Mobile 1 or Amsoil (not gonna lie, I never buy Amsoil just too expensive and I honestly don't want to go that long between oil changes). I am new to the euro oils. Are they that much better than american oils? How would you guys rate the following oils?

    1. Pentosin
    2. LiquMolly
    3. Ravenol
    4. Castrol
    5. Motul

Any other good oils you would recommend?

The Audi dealers sometimes chose different brands for price. I recently checked at two Audi dealers. One Audi dealer used Castrol, the other Audi dealer used Pennzoil (they previously used Castrol, but Pennzoil is cheaper). As long as the oil meets the specification of the sticker under the hood you should be fine.

    example...VW504: Pennzoil Platinum Euro

Here is the oil an Audi dealer supplied for my 2019 RS5: Castrol EDGE Professional 0W30 Long Life (LL III)

Oh cool. Maybe I'll switch to that (if they have a 5w30, 5w40 variant) on the next oil change as I will not be able to purchase more of the OE Professional 5w40. Kind of neat that it glows when you put a black light to it - I'm assuming it's to locate leaks?

FWIW, the local Audi dealer used 0W20 Synthetic (G-E52-577-S0) on my B9 A5 recently when I brought it in for an oil change.

What oil type / grade does your under hood sticker on your 2.0T A5 say to use. Does it say VW 504 0W-20 or VW 508 0W-20?

Just says VW 50400 or VW 50200 spec. After some research it seems I may need to go back to my dealer and have a talk with whoever did my oil change.

Newp. Owner's manual even names Castrol Edge long-life as the recommendation, but provides no further info except "see under-hood sticker".

2018 MY didn't specify an oil weight under the hood, but 2019 MY do. Same thing on the VW Golf R.

I think the stickers were purposely changed for 2019 because there was so much confusion on the 2018s as to the correct oil weight. When I took my R for its first oil change the advisor had to look up the correct oil. I'm happy the 2019 sticker lists both (spec and weight), so there should be no confusion.

The oil weight spec also changed between 2018 and 2019 leading to yet more confusion.

I'm hearing good things about Motul: been around for a long time, less oil consumption from reviews, not overpriced.

Ravenol seems overpriced and oil analysis shows it varies greatly from batch to batch as far as chemical consistency.

Pentosin, a few have stated, makes their Audis seem to run and idle much quieter. Still about $50 for 5 quarts in US.

Can we use LOW ASH motor oil in non-diesels? Is low ash just for the diesel Audis? I m liking this LiquiMoly:

Always go with Oil Approval 1st, before weight. The approval means there are specific additives that VAG specify for that engine type. Also keep in mind that certain specs i.e. 504/507 are/were only available in 5W30. The new spec 508/509 seems to only be available in 0W20. The last resort with the exception of diesels. 502 spec'd product if 507/508 arent available.
