Fault Codes after Throttle Body Adaptation attempt - B8.5 S4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hopefully you all can help me diagnose what's going on with my B8.5 S4 6MT

Short version: I used VCDS (19.6.2) to run the Throttle Body Adaptation function, but the adaptation failed and VDCS showed a message along the lines of "...Aborted | Safety Reasons...", then the car threw a lot of seemingly unrelated fault codes shown in the auto-scan log below. The car went into limp mode, with rough fluctuating idle and barely any throttle response. Note, I excluded all items from the auto-scan where no faults were found.

    Long version:
I've been chasing an issue with seemingly lousy throttle response when trying to start out in 1st gear. I am in a B8.5 S4 running EPL Stage 1 tune (although the issue exists when I'm on the stock tune as well). Thinking it may be related to the anti-stall feature that exists on the B8.5 6MT where the car automatically adds throttle to keep the engine from stalling if the driver isn't giving enough gas while trying to engage the clutch, I went into VCDS (19.6.2) Select Control Module > 53-Parking Brake > 10 Adaptation and played around with the settings for 'Drive Away Assist'. I was able to change the settings and went for a test drive and didn't notice any driveability issues or alarms/fault codes. Changing these settings did not seem to affect the laggy throttle response issue either.

Then on a whim I thought to go into the 01-Engine control module and look at the Throttle Valve Adaptation section. Before running the 'Test of Throttle Valve Adaptation', I clicked on 'Show Measuring Data' and selected Throttle Position and Accelerator Pedal Position to see what it was reading before running the test. With my foot off the gas pedal, it was showing throttle position around 14%, and then with the pedal pushed all the way to the floor it was showing around 85%. This seemed unusual to me so I proceeded with running the throttle valve adaptation test. [Can someone please comment on what values I should be seeing here?]

When I ran the test it immediately returned an error message. I did not get a screenshot of it but it was in red font and along the lines of "...Test Aborted | Safety Concerns..." or something like that. At this time the dashboard lit up with traction control system fault, sport differential fault, TPMS fault and MIL light. I ran an auto-scan in VCDS which returned all of the fault codes shown in the log below. Then I turned the ignition to the Off position, let it sit for ~10 seconds, and started the engine. Immediately the car was idling very rough, fluctuating, with barely any throttle response. TPMS, stability control, sport diff and TPMS warning lights were still illuminated and alarms beeping.

I turned the car off, ran the auto-scan again (which found all those fault codes again) and this time cleared all the fault codes. Then I started the car up again. This time the engine rev'd to ~1500 rpm and hung there for a moment, then dropped to its normal ~700 rpm but it was fluctuating/cycling a bit. I turned the car off, let it sit for a few minutes, and started it again. That time it did the initial high rev and hang thing again, but seemed to settle out at a more normal and steady idle. The stability control, sport diff, TPMS warnings did not come on this time.

I went into the 01-Engine module and looked at the fault codes section which showed the two fault codes shown at the bottom of this post. When I would clear them they would come right back. And oddly enough, when I would go into the 03-ABS module, the stability control, sport diff and TPMS warning alarms would trigger again as soon as I clicked into the module, whereas they would not come on otherwise.

Can anyone give me any guidance as to what could be happening here? Does it seem like I have an issue pertaining to the throttle body? And if so, could a throttle body issue cause all of these other fault codes to pop up? Some of them seem completely unrelated, like

Not sure what your issue is, on the B6 all you had to do for adaptation was turn the key to position 2, put the gas pedal to the floor for 3s, turn the key off, and wait 2min.

    It's a similar procedure for the B8:

    Manual throttle body adaptation:

The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving style. Do a TBA (Throttle body adaption).

    1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.

    2. Turn the key to the on position, the position just before the starter turns over.

    3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

    4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position(don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

    5. Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment. During this time you may hear very faint noises and clicks. I
only heard one sitting in my car, if I got out and popped the hood I might hear more.

    6. Drive the car as you always do.

Depending on your driving style, this may or may not be a big factor. I do a lot of city driving so
I noticed a big change after erasing my history. It is not hard to do this, just follow the
instructions - Key on, pedal down, 5 sec, key off pedal up, wait 2 minutes.

Keep the key in for the entire thing.

How is your battery? Lots of people get a bunch of random electrical problems when it starts to go.

That’s a good question. The car is now 5.5 years old so maybe the battery is starting to show signs of failure. I haven’t had any other symptoms though. I’ll have to plug in vcds again and see if I can find where to check battery health.

For anyone who has checked throttle position in VCDS, what is the expected range in terms of % open position? I was finding ~14% when not touching the peal and 85% with the pedal to the floor, but I was expecting more like ~5% when not touching the pedal to 100% with pedal to the floor.

Your findings are right (from 15 to almost 79/85), it's ok like this !

I would clear faults and then run the adaption immediately after that, dont start the car in between.
It can have problems with stored and active faults while trying to do the adaption.

Thanks for your reply. Why does it not go all the way to 100%?

it will when you get a successful adaption, otherwise its "learned" throttle response.
