Looking for just a bit of supercharger whine

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems there are many differing opinions on whether any of the aftermarket intakes add any power, reduce power, or do basically nothing, so I’m not inclined to spend hundreds of dollars on something that would at best add a negligible gain, and more likely add nothing. However, I would like to hear a bit of supercharger whine at moderate or full throttle, mostly for my own enjoyment. I read that someone used a silicone 034 motorsports tube on an A7 and that it made a huge difference in sound when using the stock air box, so I tried that along with a simple K&N cone filter. I hear no difference in the supercharger whine. I hear ever so slightly more “growl” at moderate throttle, but light driving or WOT both sound no different from stock as far as I can tell. The growl at moderate throttle isn’t enough to be noticeable. 2016 A6 3.0T / Stage 2. Was I misreading that just the tube could enhance the sound? Is there anything else inexpensive/easy I could add to the mix that wouldn’t hurt performance?

Toss in an RKX Silicone intake hose and a venturi/velocity stack with a cone filter around it. Done and all for around $120

I haven’t heard of a Venturi/velocity stack, what is it and where can I get one? Also, since I already have the 034 intake hose, I don’t think I’d need the RKX, unless there’s something different about the RKX model?

I've had a Injen intake on two C7s. Looks and sounds great. Fits into stock airbox and is super easy to install. Some places have them for around $220, but sometimes you can find one for cheaper. Can hear the supercharger on most applications of throttle.

And from MY personal experience, my usual trip out of town mpg improved about 2.5mpg.

Hopefully other C7.5 owners will chime in but, I have had a C7 A6 and now a C7.5, and my C7.5 in stock form produces no whine? For the first month I seriously thought my supercharger was broken or something, though that clutch may be prone to odd behavior or even failure.

That sounds reasonable - I was under the impression that most intakes were $400 up to $1000+. I’m thinking though that in the stock air box, it shouldn’t be much different than the hose and K&N I have now, as far as sound goes. I have to think the air box is the “silencing point” since right now there’s really nothing else blocking the sound.

Yes, there is close to no whine stock. I can sometimes hear a hint of it at moderate throttle when it’s just enough to wind it up but not enough to overwhelm it with engine noise, but unless you’re really paying attention you won’t hear it. I assume for most A6 owners that’s a plus, since it does make for a quiet, refined experience.

Take the stock air box out... cut out the entire bottom half of it that faces away from the engine. Reinstall...

It doesn't completely seal off the air box like the stock fitting, it leaves about 1.5" around the piping allowing more noise to get out. Unfortunately gaps in the air box or no air box can heat soak your engine in warm climates. I haven't noticed any heating issues with my 2+ years running my Injen in Texas though, but I also dont care for drag times.

I have had the RKX inlet and RS7 air box installed for a little over a week now. I had the RKX inlet installed on the stock air box for a week while I waited on the RS7 box. Currently this is my only mod to the car.

Some of my impressions on this combo.
    - Throttle response is noticeably improved. I give more credit to the improved flow of the inlet hose.
    - A hint of s/c whine but nothing near what the injen or roc intake sound levels. Under WOT you can really only hear the S/C at the top end. Part throttle low and mid range RPM the whine is more noticeable.
    - My butt dyno says there may be a slight power increase low and midrange. ( I don't have any data to back this up so it may be a placebo effect.)
    - OEM+ look and still a sealed intake capable of 500+hp

i have a c7.5 (2017 a6 3.0t) didn't want the injen cheesy intake with no heat shield so i went HPS route and i just installed it today, sounds great, fit great, has a heat shield which was one of my main needs, and didnt cost that much from the injen, and looks great in the red to match the coil packs, they also have different colors if you dont prefer red

Does this also work on the 2016+ CREC motor? Some intakes that work on the 2012-2015 don't have 2016+ listed as compatible.

I guess I should update that I sucked it up and got a CTS intake (with heat shield) for I think around $250. It sounds great, looks great, and I haven’t noticed any power loss (or gain) yet. I’m happy with it! It’s definitely loud at some points, but I got used to it quickly and grew to love that whine.

    Really?
I heard of it long ago maybe even in the B8 S4 days.
It's not something I have done, but makes perfect sense since that is the pads only function... to quiet the supercharger.
Probably not as dramatic as an intake, but still something, and free, if that is your cup of tea.

I am going the Rs7 airbox route. I am stationed in Germany so can order parts from German warehouses and dealerships. Got the whole assembly fro 180 bucks shipped to my door. One advantage to being over here, get the parts closer to the source.
