Looking into OBDeleven... please educate me.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I started looking into OBDeleven after installing a new set of Bilstein coilovers on my 16’ 6MT. I wanted to see if this would be worth it (over a Vag-Com) for someone like myself with a few things planned in mind. The reason for this is because my headlights are sitting too low and I was told to properly adjust/reset them via OBD and not physically at the headlight adjustment screws (bare with me, Audi and the tech/coding side of it all is new to me).

Either way, I downloaded the OBDeleven app to get a look at the app features, although I haven’t actually purchased an OBDeleven PRO. So far, I was looking for the Central Electrics area in the app, like I’ve seen accessed in a couple of videos online, but haven’t found that feature for headlight adjustment(?).

All in all, would the OBDeleven be beneficial to me, or are there other better alternatives?

I’d plan on using it only for: future brake job to release the rear piston, the comfort windows locking/unlocking and the mirror tilt when reversing, that’s basically it. **Unless there is more available when the actual device/app is connected to the vehicle itself**

Additionally, I only have an iPhone, which from my understanding the PRO version supports it fully and previous version did not?

Afaik ios version has less features than the Android version. If you are willing to pay slightly more, go with VCDS because they have better support. I think they have mobile app now, too.

Ahhhhh, that would make a little more sense. My main objective is to get these headlights re-adjusted back to stock height, so I need full features. All other features would be a small “gimmick” and rear brakes won’t need replacing for a while still. My only other option is to cop an old android phone from someone.

For the VagCom price and my intended use, I don’t believe it’s worth it; slight overkill.

I have obdeleven pro, but for my b7. So not sure about the whole headlight thing, but ive used it a ton for everything else. Can't beat for the price($80 when I got it). I use it for all kinds of diagnostics, live data, data logs, adaptations, abs bleed, etc. Been great. Only issue is can be a little glitch when data logging, and not quite as detailed as vagcom. But it's served me well. Hope this helps.

Great to hear Jayz691. Pretty much the most I’d use it for, so it seems like it’s more than enough for me. The actual headlight thing was provided to me by another member. It’s a tutorial from DAP on YouTube on how to reset the headlights after lowering the vehicle.

I’ve been told that this is the proper way, rather than getting under the hood and messing with the physical headlight adjustment screws. Maybe others can chime in on other alternatives for this. Based on more research, it’s seems like iOS is supported but only limited at the moment. Otherwise, it’s in the works as we speak.. would love to have it fully operational with the iPhone.

I have it, works well. They’re updating iOS version all the time. It does more now than it did when I got it 3 months ago. One touch apps work well. If you wanna do long coding you can always just get a cheap android tablet to use.

Hmm good to hear, so additional features are automatically added when updates come with the app?

Yes, I believe the long coding is what you’re referring to for the headlight adjustment feature. It’s done via the Central Electrics tab, which does not appear to have this feature at the moment in iOS.

I assume multiple devices can be used like an Android & iOS device under one log-in... but only one OBDeleven can be used per VIN?

You can use it on multiple devices for sure and multiple vins also I believe but I’m not 100% sure on the vins. You just create a login that’s usable across whatever iOS or Android device you’re currently using. Also, the iOS update does add features just like a normal iOS app update would to a different app.

Perfect! This is what I figured but wanted to confirm. In that case, I can use a lot of the features on my iPhone and borrow a friends Android for the long coding to get that headlight situation reset. Eventually, I assume that iOS will also be fully developed.

Would going through ECS be my best best? I see them for $109 there and $139 elsewhere. Wanted to make sure it’s the same Pro version. Hoping there isint more than one version of the Pro.

I bought mine direct from the company but shipping takes a while because it comes from I believe Lithuania.

For $199 you are better off getting the VCDS cable and be able to do everything you need and more and if you want to sell it you put it up for sale for $175 with 2 VINs left and it sells right away.

I though these were about $400. Unless that’s some unlimited version? The coding part is what I’m unfamiliar with and from my understanding nothing is pre-coded with VCDS... you must do everything from scratch?

The older ones cost more, now you can get the 3 VIN models for $199 and you are not starting from scratch. You can find most everything on line that you want to change. I use 1 here on my own car and just googled the things I wanted to change and it walks you right through it.

    I would suggest VCDS too.

I have an unlimited one and have used it on all my cars, as well as friends and family members. there is plenty of information on forums (including Ross Tech's) about how to use it in a safe manner.

I’ll look into it and definitely appreciate the information. Not in a hurry just yet, so I’ll see which way I end up going... price and my intended use were my main factors. Any and all info helps in regards to both of the products.

For Android phones re: functionality VCDS > OBD11 > Carista but you will need to make your own value comparison. I love my OBD11.

I own an OBDeleven and have gone nowhere near its capabilities. From the sound of it, you won’t either. I use my shit business Android for it (I bought mine pre-iOs Pro), and still am happy with it. I use it mainly for scanning. Just used it for DSG fluid change (temp). Worth the 80 bucks or whatever..

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. With my intended use and the simplicity of it, I think it should be enough. I could use it’s full capabilities by using a friends android (for now) but eventually I assume iOS will be fully functional. Not arguing that a VCDS cable is an overall the better option but not for the few times that I’m looking to use it.

Only future things I could see an OBDeleven being useful for me is a rear brake pad replacement. Scanning is always a plus to monitor things of coarse.

Hey man I have successfuly used OBD11 pro for headlights ajustement from DAP video. Follow their instructions it worked fine for me I actually use it everytime I touch the ride height. I turned off the soundaktor thank god and many little stuff like headlight off while using your flash signals. Its a reliable scan tool as well before you decide to take it to a shop you if you get a code or having issue. I havent used VCSD but obd11 works fine for my basic needs.

Thank you for the feedback. Pretty much the info I was looking for, so I appreciate it.

I assume you’re using an android device? I’ll find an android to use for that headlight adjustment specifically. The other stuff I’d use would be a few apps like... comfort windows, DRL turn signals like yourself and maybe mirror tilt.. As iOS develops, I’m sure I’d play with it more in the future using my iPhone. True, I could scan the vehicle for codes too if it ever needed any readings.

anytime, correct Android phone. My wife has a VW golf so its a no brainer for me. I had a bad Keyless door sensor (no dash light) and the famous SAI code p0491 so I knew early what was happening.

Are these able to be used on multiple VINs? I assume the online account you can log into from multiple devices but wasn’t sure how many vehicle these can be used with.

You can use it on multiple cars, no limit. Not like vcds. The $200 vagcom is 3 vin, and also need a laptop. Thats why I didn't go that route, extra expense.

With regards to the headlight adjustment, i googled and watched youtube and the bottom line, there appears to be nothing wrong with using the manual adjusters. Yes there is a an electric process and saw youtube video but nothing clear on doing that vs manual.

My new ecodes were very high after I installed them. Lowered them down via the manual adjustment and that is were they go after the initial startup adjustment checks. I have AFS so they go up/down, L/R on startup and go to where I set them.

    Discussed a little here https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...adlight+adjust

I've done this procedure and it works really well. (Done after I put on the 034 springs)

Your best bet is to just pick up a cheap android tablet. I grabbed a Samsung galaxy tab for about 70 bucks off of amazon and it works great. Just make sure that the version of Android is compatible with the latest version required.

    Good luck!

I think OBD11 is easier to use for non complex uses.

Also, seen another video of an iPhone user that purchased an old Android phone for the same reason. He stated that WIFI is necessary to make any adjustments... does this still hold true if you have your regular cell phone service/data in use? I assumed you could use the OBD11 anywhere if you just have sufficient internet connection, without the need of WIFI specifically.

Although I just found out that long coding should be available sometime this month for iOS, I figured I’d still ask about the WIFI question I mentioned above.

I used it on the road with a data connection, it's a little bit slower but still works.

Awesome, that’s what I figured. I bet the individual I’ve seen stated WIFI considering that he was using an Android device without a SIM car in it.

Would this be the exact OBDeleven recommended?..

    https://www.ecstuning.com/b-obdeleve...4871obd02~obd/

I have seen several different “packages” but wanted to confirm. I currently have an iPhone and will wait for the iOS version to fully develop. Meanwhile, I’m planning on using a friends Android for the couple of long coding things I need at this time. I assume iOS should be here anytime, although I’m not sure if this global pandemic is putting a small stop on the actually iOS release date.

Purchased from ECS today, thanks. Any ideas on future updates for iOS? I know that they were recently forecasting long coding (or full functionality) by the end of March(?)

Well, my question was answered.. OBDeleven added an update today.

Otherwise, here’s a random question: has anyone ever been denied a warranty claim due to coding using the OBDeleven? I guess most of the B8.5 warranties are up (my factory warranty ended in July 2019). On the other hand, I do have one more AudiCare service left but I assume that coding wouldn’t affect anything in that sense(?)

Also, is TD1 related more to the tune/power increase of the ECU, rather than something like coding the DRLs or a Mirror Dip?

I guess you could brick your ECU in the hidden menu, and it might not be covered.

How is the OBDeleven you bought? I have an iPhone as well and looking into getting one. Does it have all the functionality?
