Wondering people's thoughts on Motul oil. It was the recommended choice of oil back when I had my A6 2.7t. I have a jug of 5w-40 and am wondering if I can use it. It has been sitting, so not sure if motor oil has a shelf life or not.

There is a list you can google of all oils that meet Audi spec. If it’s on there you should be good to go but there may be certain oil specs Motul makes that are not on the list.

I use Motul in my S6.

The Motul rep who posts sometimes recommended their 8100 x-cess as being their best product, but their 8100 x-clean product seems to be more in line with the Specific's SAPS content and lower NOACK. If that makes any difference. Both are VW 502.

I have been using Motul X-Clean in my 3.0L A6 since I've owned it. Don't have any comparisons, but it's been reliable, and can't say I'm burning anything. Can't speak to longevity in the jug though.

I'm about to order Pentosin Oil from ECS tuning. Part of a package deal they have with the magnetic drain plug and billet oil filter housing. Never heard of the company but I doubt ECS will sell trash.

My other Audi I used mobile 1 all the time, now 8 years later back to Audi again and I think i'm going to use Castrol as it never let me down but there are a lot more options now. I just have seen on here a lot of people using 0-40 or 5-40 oil weight not the 30 weight. I also live in CT winter time i will be using 0-40

502 or 505 spec oil is what you need.

Seems that the factory and dealer use Castrol 5W40

    Other popular choices
    Mobil 1
    Liqui Moly
    Motul
    Pentosin

Castrol and M1 you can get at Walmart for about $25 for a 5 quart jug.
LM can be found at Advance Auto for for around $40-45 for a 5 quart jug or $36 with Amazon Prime.
Pentosin is harder to find locally.

I have been using the M1 for about 50K now and it seems to do well. I am considering switching to the Pennzoil 502 spec oil on the next change.

Don't forget a quality filter as well. Mann makes the OEM 3.0 and Mahle makes the OEM 4.0 filter. I get my filters off Amazon prime for the best price around.

I've run Motul 5w40 8100 x-cess in my 3.0T C6 A6 the whole time I owned it, it's a great oil although I never had a chance to get the oil analyzed. Will likely run it in the C7.5 when it comes due for an oil change.

I found some cars tend to use oil more with certain brands the same oil in my BMW use more than my old Audi so I swapped and it dropped oil usage.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but commentary on modern oil quality is meaningless without scientific analysis.

Sounds like you should ask project farm since you don't trust commentary.

Your commentary is continually meaningless without scientific analysis.

    lol
Didn't mean to hurt feelings. I actually enjoy parades.

Thing is, what most people point to when making comments about motor oil is that they've never had an issue or failure with Brand X. The logic seems to be that, since I've not had any failures, then Brand X is great and possibly the best. It's fine to hold that opinion, but what does that mean relative to other brands, especially when those using Brand Y and Brand Z report the same experience?

I've no interest in bashing anyone's personal opinions. I'm just interested in real measurements before declaring any oil is truly superior.

And now, off to the parade!

Feelings cannot be hurt if you don't have any in the first place - it's a computer. Always keyboard warriors out there swoop'n and poop'n on parades.

Oil analysis is certainly prudent and many people get them. The OP's question on the other hand and pretty much everyone's comment on this post were none of the scenario's you described.

It's like thinking you are jumping in on someone's parade, all excited to pop people's balloons... until you realize there are no balloons... no band playing... it's actually a funeral precession. No one wants to be "that guy". There is always a life lesson somewhere. God speed.
