Good info. I was looking at getting a Quattro, but I'm not sure how much that's really worth it over sticking with FWD. A lot of extra weight for not a ton of advantage on the track - gen 1 Haldex and all.

I'm also eyeballing Porsche Boxsters and have seen that people are 1.8t swapping them, as well. So I'm considering that. I'd love to be able to get a Cayman so that I don't have to deal with Cabriolet stuff, but even a bare Cayman shells are still selling for $7-10k.

I have a thousand ideas rolling around in my head... who knows which one I'll be on when the right deal comes my way.

with gen 1 quattro it isn't that great to be fair. There are aftermarket controllers like the HPA one which allow the locking of the system for "constant" 50/50 or ever the Powertrack inserts that place higher pressure on the clutch pack to allow the same thing but actually constant. I believe AWD is better for track but the FWD versions would be better for drag. Also there aren't any non-quattro models with the 225 motor if i'm correct but i'm not sure. my research on the fwd models isn't the best

The FWD is like any mk4 vw in a TT shell down to the same torsion beam suspension. Not for me.
Gen 1 haldex does its job and after market controllers are not needed. Only speeds up its death lol. I m pushing probably damn near 300 at the wheels and I dont spin anything. I d gladly trade a couple hundred pounds of weight for part time awd and full independent rear susp vs an ancient torsion beam set up.

My research into them had basically said the same thing - gen 1 Haldex isn't great. I had seen/heard of the HPA controller, but not the inserts; I'll have to look into those.

I don't care for the drag aspect - not with the TT at least. Definitely looking for a "road course" track car. And yes, my understanding was that all TT225's are Quattro. I was curious as to how many TT180's were Quattro though. First year only? I haven't jumped that deep into the research.

I was aware of that. I know the front spindles are different (TT's being the desired ones). I'm fairly well versed on MK4's - I've owned one and have been considering those, as well.

Yeah, I had definitely imagined that a controller on a road course car would murder the Haldex real fast. I've been meaning to look into them, their ability to be swapped and/or built, etc. The independent rear is definitely desirable, as well - my MK2 will lift the inside rear wheel a good 4 inches around hard corners on track. Definitely not the best for utilizing all available traction. Doesn't help having the heavy ass VR up front either, but it is a blast to drive.

I believe the ones that were TT180 Quattro were the ones between 2000 and 2002. The introduction of the 225 motor was the last time 180 was in a quattro. Alongside that was the loss of 5 speed in a quattro. I happen to have both of these, (I guess rare) 180 quattro mated to a 5 speed. Whenever I see TTs now I see them with 6 speeds and sit in jealousy of mpg.

Inserts add more of a shaft to a plug at the top of the haldex system but cause the system to be at higher pressure, allowing the clutch to be engaged constantly. It's essentially a "dumb" controller but at a fraction of the cost compared to HPA and stuff

Haha i m not sold. Sounds like a good way to wreck ur haldex. You outta trying and report back.I m not bragging but i got a shit load of power and i never spin or understeer. That shit is glued as is.

I was thinking of buying the insert tbh, I have a haldex version where that plug is a 17mm hex bolt so I could install it at the track and then take it off when on the road. It's roughly $80 off eBay since there aren't any distributors in the states. From my reading about the insert, the power of the vehicle may not directly affect the system unless haldex already can't handle what you're putting down aha. But again, if one were to pop up for sale in the fb groups I might jump for it. Although it would take away from buying a full kit. I asked a question regarding the haldex controller v. insert option and someone linked this. Never knew of its existence and not sure how well it would work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/32419773539...C-xoEbQPh22LCU

Here's a comment on the matter as well from a guy replying: "The insert makes it a "dumb" controller, just increasing the pressure and not really allowing it to uncouple, it becomes more like a traditional center diff. It also doesn't speed up controller response, just much greater engagement once it does respond.
The HPA controller retains the smart elements of the system, allowing it to uncouple when rear drive is not needed, while dramatically speeding up response and aggression of application, while also giving you control over what power is being sent backwards.
The other option is a straight forward United Motorsports map. I believe this is considered the best upgrade for performance but you don't get the controller like the HPA"

I took Bauhaus to Memphis to be my commuter car and it’s doing swell. It’s so well balanced for a car borne of the same platform as my nose-heavy GTI VR6 of the same era. Such an underrated performer.

I saw an orange TT locally on Sunday. First time I've seen an orange one in person... really made me want one again.

It was definitely enthusiast owned and looked really clean.

I wanna say mk1s are appreciating because they're becoming more and more of a classic but as the government is giving out more money, more people want cars. Higher demand leads to higher price, etc etc. In other news, finally got my car properly tuned. Found the guy on fb but he's extremely responsive and knowledgeable. A lot better than the last dumb f*** i went to

I think they're appreciating because almost any tuner related car seems to be appreciating. I was browsing a dozen different sub-$2000 986 Boxsters about a year and a half ago. Can't find one for under $5k now.

What I see a lot of is people just buying up the cheap stuff and trying to flip it almost immediately for a huge gain.

There are 3 or 4 MK1 TT's that I see constantly listed on FB Marketplace... bouncing from owner to owner. I've almost bought two of them a couple different times.

I've tried. 😂 There's a silver that people keep trying to flip. They'll list it at $5-6k... and then it'll slowly make it's way down to $3k. The last owner had it at $4k, and I offered $3k... knowing it'd be there eventually. He denied, even though the car needs work (a/c doesn't work, interior is a bit torn up with parts/panels missing, coils need changed, p/s leaks,... it has problems - but I want a track car, so most of those things don't matter to me).

A few weeks later it was reduced to $2.8k... I reached out again, but he said he had literally just sold it. I'm keeping my eyes open though. I want a track car... so I'm not looking to buy a $6+k pristine car.

Just checked... it's listed again right now. lol, started at $6.5k... down to $5k already. I know it sold for less than $3k last time.

    Price negotiable

Good car and fun to drive. Runs and drives as is.

It’s awd, big turbo (k04) Audi TT.
It’s loud and pushing somewhere around 300+hp. It has a straight piped exhaust.
Has a lot of money put into it.
    Brand new battery.

Cons: needs windshield/ power steering/ brakes done/ injectors cleaned
I have the stuff for the power steering.
It has some curb rash on wheels and they need to be refinished. Has some cosmetic issues.

Will be getting the issues fixed if I don’t sell

I will make a deal with you.

With my S5 being totaled recently, I'm in the market for something new. But I already have my next car picked out... and I might not mess with a track car after I buy it. We'll see what happens. I might still offer $3k to this guy, haha. I'm sure he won't bite. We'll see.

Where did you see it listed? I picked this one up in NJ. Among things it needs/needed like broken rear springs, vacuum leaks, calipers, ball joints, badly clouded headlights, etc, etc... I'm trying to figure out if the t-belt has been done. It does have a newer top that was replaced in 2016 and a new clutch and manual trans last year. I just did the springs, new brake booster pipe, almost every vac line, cleaned up the lights and a caliper over the past couple weeks. Now at least I can drive it.

2001 TT roadster - Twin turbo VR6 quattro 6speed manual built by HPA Motorsports

Here's my 2001 roadster built by HPA Motorsports in British Columbia. Check out the specs attached - 508 HP/556lb ft torque, twin turbo vr6, quattro and a 6 speed manual. To say it's an absolute SLEEPER that handles like a shifter kart is an understatement! One prior owner who had it converted by HPA as a brand new car, and we have owned it since 2005. Under 15k miles. HPA Motorsports doesn't need any introduction on this site, and coming across one of their build for sale is extremely rare.
**** It will be going up for online auction on (BaT) Bring-a-Trailer in a few weeks. Looking forward to lots of interest!

    Did you use a kit?

I will need to do this to mine, as well as on the tails (someone tinted them at some point and it's next to impossible to remove the tint now).

I love that they're still using the factory airbox. I think as time goes on and people do more testing, they're starting to figure out that most factory airboxes are really good.

No kit needed. Just use 1500 and 2000 wet sandpaper. The spray qith a high quality clear coat. My lenses are actually smoked as well, still came out pretty clear.

That is so true - Marcel Horn at HPA is an engineering genius at making big horsepower...and if this needed any other type of airbox to breathe, he would have made one, or used one!

I just did the springs, new brake booster pipe, almost every vac line, cleaned up the lights and a caliper over the past couple weeks. Now at least I can drive it.
So it's not the one I saw. There was an identical one listed on Facebook marketplace in laconia or Bristol NH

I just got the word last night that the Bring a Trailer (BaT) online auction for my HPA built TT starts tomorrow morning (10/24/21) at 8:45am PST. It will run for one week, ending on 10/31/21 at 12:05pm PST.

If you aren't familiar with Bring-a-Trailer, you should check them out online. They list some amazing vehicles, and there are always lots of comments from educated bidders. Feel free to check out the auction, and it should be interesting. Cars built and documented by HPA very rarely come up for sale, so this may be your opportunity to pick up the ultimate sleeper!
