MMI 2G High Dead, need help to troubleshoot!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So got into my car a couple days ago and when starting the car, the MMI screen flashed but then goes black. Nothing is functional. I have tried the forced restart (Setup, Knob, Upper Right) and splash screen shows and disappears (same as car startup). Fuses look to be ok not sure where to look next. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you think it's electronic related or a screen failure?

I dont think its a screen failure because color splash screen displays fine, then when usual menus would come up it turn black.

If you have the B&O check the fuse on the amp. Mine was blown and everything was black.

I haven't had a chance to really get into the trunk - am I correct in assuming the amp is right on top? The silver unit with cooling fins up top?

This thread is timely as I just purchased a B8 with the same issue. The screen fires up when I press power or any other buttons (NAV, CAR etc.) but then blacks out. I've been doing some Google-fu and have read a lot of info but am hoping some of the folks here can guide me specifically on the B8 platform.

Hi, New on here but I've had the same issue and fixed it.

So the MMI system uses fiber-optics, in a series loop, unfortunately this means if you have one faulty component, then the whole thing goes down. mine was doing exactly what you describe, turn it on, will get to the splash screen and then turn back off again.

If you go to ebay you can buy a ''bypass loop''for a few £, and what you need to do is unplug each component one at a time and put the bypass loop in place instead.
When you find the faulty component, the system will turn on but with reduced functions, I.e if you plug it in instead of the blutooth unit, everything should work instead of the blutooth etc.

mine was the blutooth unit under the rhs footwell, fairly common as they can get wet, also look at the components in the boot (amp nav unit etc) as that's another common issue, then itll just be a case of finding a replacement part with the same part number and getting it coded to work. (because of Audi's component protection system).

I hope this helps, get in touch if you have any questions!

Thanks, Alan. I did order the loop and should have it today or Monday. I took a closer look after I posted and saw the shock (that dampens the trunk opening) was leaking and I'm seeing residue on the amp. The foam on the trunk floor also seems slightly damp (not oily) so there's also some water ingress from somewhere.

I noticed the Nav unit lights up if I press the eject button so I'm assuming the amp is the likely culprit here. Will know more once I've popped it off and tested with the loop.

Can you confirm if there's a fuse on the amp itself or if it's housed in one of the fuse blocks around the car?

Ok, don't see a fuse on the amp itself so that question is answered.

I took the amp out and looped the fiber connection. I then saw the signal pass to each of the modules underneath (3 of them, 1 is Nav). However, headunit/MMI won't boot or stay powered on.

Is this normal with the amp out of the loop or does it indicate there is something still wrong elsewhere in the system?

If you have a scan tool, it'll make clear when there is a MOST bus fault vs. it being something else. Ring break diagnosis is managed by the J533, which has a separate connection to all MOST ring members.

If you have a Nav unit in your left rear electronics stack, I assume that's the DVD drive and you have an '09 with MMI 2G? Stack would be J525 sound processor/amp, R AM/FM radio tuner, J401 DVD Navigation, and then R146 SAT radio tuner. The MMI control module will be the J523, sitting behind the climate controls and below the in-dash CD changer. This unit completely powers and controls the J685 FID (dash screen), so if the J523 is unhappy, the screen will be blank/off.

Fuses are always in the fuse panels, not on the devices. Investigate the fuses 1 and 3 in the middle row of fuse panel D (right end of dash). Fuse 1 should be 5A for the R41 in-dash CD changer and the R199 AMI in the glovebox. Fuse 3 probably isn't there; it isn't in my '09 MMI 2G High with Navigation vehicle. Then in fuse panel F (the right rear cargo area; I don't give a damn about how the owner's manual labels the rows there as "panels", that's wrong), row 3 (the one with C on it), fuse 3 7.5A is the R radio and J401 DVD Nav, fuse 4 30A is the J525 amp, fuse 5 5A is the J523 MMI control module (which in turn powers the J685 FID screen),

Keep in mind that all B8 (A4, A5, Q5) switched to MMI 3G for MY 2010. So only '08 A5 and '09 will have MMI 2G.

You're doing unnecessary guessing without a scan tool.

I had the same thought since posting and picked up a VAGCOM cable from a buddy on the way home. You are correct in saying it's an 09 A4 and from everything I've read online, I should have a 2G.

This is my first time diagnosing one of these cars so I'm a little out of my depth. I'm going to go check out all the fuses since those are a simple item to cross off my list. I was also planning on running the Optical bus diagnostic via VCDS as I assume that should give me a better idea of how to proceed.

I'm not sure how detailed the diagnostic is but I'll be back with results once I've run it. I was also planning on running the auto-scan so I can anything else that's in memory, clear all codes and then re-run the scan + opt.bus diagnostic to see if anything has changed.

Am I approaching this correctly? When running the optical diagnostic, will the amp being disconnected start throwing "false" failures or is it just checking for continuity in signal via the fiber? Heading down now with my fingers crossed :)

Just post opticalbus test result, it may narrow down the isolation process, but not always. If fuses ok, optical test useless, then just go with loop, isolating module by module, amp, radio,cd,bt etc...

Will do. Heading down to scan and check fuses shortly.

Also ordered a few extra loops in case more than 1 module is bad so should have that tomorrow.

    Thanks!

Just start with a full vehicle scan for DTCs and see what the car already knows and what devices might not currently be accessible. This is always your start point.

    Ok, some interesting developments.

    - Did the optical bus scan and came back with a couple that showed ERROR.

    0F-Digital Radio(SAT)	OK OK

    - Then started checking fuses (test light + visual inspection).
    - All of them checked out but when I hopped back in the car to resume with VCDS, the MMI was up and running .

Almost seems that removing and re-inserting fuses allowed the system to reset? When I was testing mid-day yesterday, I had done the ignition cycle and MMI reset in between each step but perhaps that wasn't enough?

    - Proceeded to scan and clear all DTC's - I have them saved just in case I need to look back later.
    - Took the car out for a drive and had the MMI cut out/shut off 3-4 times. Pressing power or NAV/CAR etc. would boot it up each time.
    - I went back and removed+attached the optical loop and it has been fine since.
    - The only code related to the system at this time is that the J525 is unreachable - absolutely normal since I have it disconnected.
    - EDIT: Also have "02635 - Tuner Not Enabled/Activated" code from 0F-Digital Radio module. Will look into whether this is tied to amplifier as well.

The loop is one of those cheap ones (not like the VAG one where the fiber is housed in the plastic bracket) from ebay so I'm starting to suspect that may be the cause of the shutdowns while moving/driving. I'm going to monitor over the next couple of days to see what happens.

One thing I did notice (since it was snowing yesterday) is that there were a couple of water droplets right on top of the amp/carrier area. Thankfully I had a plastic bag draped over that area and the fried amp is still out so no damage to the other units. I've seen reports on A5OC that the water ingress is from the rubber trunk stop - is that the same issue on the A4's? Is there a cover available for it OR has anyone come up with a long-term solution?

Thank you to everyone that has chimed in to help thus far. Smac770, the post with fuses and locations was fantastic as it made the process very quick and also allowed the MMI to start back up. Glad to be back on AZ

02635 will always be there if you do not have an active Sirius subscription.

Wet electronics in both rear corners is not uncommon in the B8; believe there's a thread here about repairing soaked J525s (the amp).

As for the fuse, it could have been some corrosion build up and just needed a re-seating to make a new fresh connection. If a bad disk light came on one of the disks in my disk arrays back in the day, first step is unplug/replug see if the light goes out. That fixed it most of the time. Just needed a clean connection reestablishment.

Will do some searching - I hadn't come across a J525 repair thread in my previous hunt but I may have passed over some threads based on their title.

Is the J525 meant to refer to the B&O amplifier or is the non-B&O unit also referred to as J525 while bearing a different part #? Asking so that I don't skip over content (non-B&O) that may still be relevant to my issue.

In related news, I popped open the amp today and from what I see, the damage is on the larger/longer part of the board. I recall reading that the CP data is housed on the short board. If that's true, I may be able to pick up an amp/board, put the two halves together and skip a trip to the dealer

Also, I've been out and about all day with no interruptions to the MMI.

To confirm my hunch of the loop being the issue, I went to the back and wiggled the connector and wire on the loop itself. Through the rear window, I saw the MMI display shut down. Excellent example of why good tools are important as I probably spent a little longer than needed during troubleshooting because of the faulty/finicky test loop.

J525 is the outboard sound processor/amplifier. These terms are generic, not specific. Ie, your part number for your J525 will vary depending on your installed equipment. The plugs on your J525 will vary depending on your part number. So B&O, non-B&O, if you have an amp in the rear left, it's the J525 from a wiring and system perspective. MMI 3G has the amplifier integrated into the radio R for non-B&O; in that configuration, I don't know if the radio R appears on the gateway list as two devices (R and J525) or just as an R, but that's not relevant to your MMI 2G scenario.

Instrument cluster - Control Module Incorrectly Coded; you been playing with the coding on that?
What's up with the parking sensors module (J446 at address 10)? Is it unplugged?
    Nav, J401, cannot be reached.
J605, eeprom error? The J605 and J756 are the two modules that include the motors that raise and lower the rear lid. Does your rear lid open and close fine?
The whole left rear stack seems unpowered, J525 amp, R radio, J401 DVD Nav, sat radio. All of that and the amp fuses are in row 3 (C), fuses 3 (7.5A) and 4 (30A). Make sure they are not blown.
0E is your in-dash CD changer, 1E is your AMI port in the glovebox. Likely inaccessible because the optical bus is down. They do not have CAN connections in addition to the MOST connection, unlike the R and J525 which are on CAN.
control head, your E380 MMI controls, is it not working?

The G238 air quality sensor should be in the air box in the plenum chamber going down to the HVAC fan. It's on a LIN bus with the G395. You should see if it's plugged in, and see if there's a problem with the fuse 5 in row 1 of the panel on the left end of the dash.

I assume you've tried to code out the TPMS system and that's why the Gateway and Instrument Cluster are currently pissed at the coding?

MMI 3G has the amplifier integrated into the radio R for non-B&O; in that configuration, I don't know if the radio R appears on the gateway list as two devices (R and J525) or just as an R, but that's not relevant to your MMI 2G scenario.
Very helpful. I appreciate the rundown and I hope I can pass this onto someone else in need down the line.

In related news, I took apart the amp and spent some time cleaning. I didn't see anything that looked blown/burnt except for one tiny "don't know what it's called". Should have taken pictures.....

Reassembled and dropped the amp back in the car and voila, SOUND!

So far, I know the drivers for lows (speakers in door) and tweeters (sideview mirror panel) aren't firing but everything else seems to be working.

I'm going to scan again tomorrow, check the cables passing from body to door and hopefully pop off the panels to double check everything is plugged in and that the speakers themselves aren't shot. Given that both of them aren't playing, I suspect it's not the speakers themselves but it seems like an easy thing to check before shelling out for amp repair/replacement.

As far as the leak goes, I'm fairly confident it was from the grommet that holds the rubber trunk stop. Sealed it off with some RTV and waiting for it to cure so I can water test again. The stack is currently covered with a garbage bag so nothing can leak in.

My Bose amp went last year, i got a replacement and had the dealer recode for the hw protection. In the process of them recoding the amp the airbag module went out and had them replace that as well. Following that everything seemed to work except i lost radio reception. Fast fwd a year later I brought car back to dealer for inspection, picked it up, and a day later the MMI when dark. I went searching for fuses and noticed the rear compartments in were soaking wet. I keep the car in garage but at dealer the car was out in rain for a 4 days. I have a spare amp and tried to swap that out, but did not make a difference. I did try to disable the TPMS b/c with MMI out i can reset them and the alerts every start was annoying, but wasnt able to do that successful. That is the only things i have done.

Instrument cluster - Control Module Incorrectly Coded; you been playing with the coding on that? Besides TPMS and reseting service interval havent done any coding

Just make sure the bag is up high over the amp, not on the amp. :-) Those electronics get hot and require air flow.

    Streamline,

TPMS - I would have hoped you would have copied down the original long coding on your gateway and instrument cluster so they could be put back in the event of a problem. Then again, it may simply be because you didn't unplug the TPMS module, as we still get diagnostic access to it. You have to unplug that thing as part of the process. The J502 TPMS is powered by the 5A fuse 1 in row 2 (B) in the right rear. Go pull that fuse.

G238 - did you check this sensor? You can't miss it on the mesh intake under the right end of the plenum chamber

E380 - if your MMI controls are not functioning, it's more likely that what they control is currently inaccessible, which is pretty much everything since the MOST infotainment bus is down

J446 - this is down low in that same space as the fuse block in the right rear; it's run by the 5A fuse 5 in row 4 (D) of fuse panel F (the block in the right rear). It doesn't make much sense for this to be involved with all the other mess you have going on, unless the module is actually not working. Should have three sockets on one end of it, but only two plugs should be installed.

When you're checking these fuses, you're checking that 12v is present on both sides of the fuse (I think the J446 fuse is term 15, so ignition will have to be on for 12v to be present)?

left rear stack, J525, R, J401, R146 - this is the amp, radio, navigation, sat radio stack in the back left. It would seem water has taken out at least one device in this stack. This is breaking the optical bus. Normal problem isolation process here. Pull the optical plug off the amp, do you see a red light on one half? That should be the MOST signal from the front of the car. Then it goes amp->radio->nav->sat->back to front of car. With one of those devices down, the device is not forwarding the MOST bus content. You'll have to pull the stack to get any access to the plugs. But with the car on, I imagine if you pull the optical plug off the stack devices 1 by 1, one of them will be entirely dark. Which means there's no light coming from the previous (higher up) device. But it could be the whole stack is fried too. You could try by simply taking the optical plug from the J525 and plugging it into the plug on the radio, thus bypassing the J525. Or if you know the J401 navigation is functional (do you see the lights on it come on?), then put the J525 optical plug into the J401, bypassing the J525 and the R radio. Essentially, you need to get the red light going back to the front of the car. And then fix whatever is broken in that corner, after fixing whatever your water leak issue is.

    https://youtu.be/JnrvH20SYmg
43s, notice the blinking red light on 1, that's from the upstream device. 2 is the path to the downstream device.

    Smac770,

TPMS - Unfortunately I did not copy down the initial long coding when attempting the TPMS disable, when i followed the procedure on here it wasnt successful so i reversed the process and plugged the fuse back in. Is it possible to get the long code back?

    G238 - I will check this tonght

J446 - will also check this tonight

Left stack - I did have the full stack out but did not follow the optical for each. I did notice when swapping out the amp that the optical was visible there, but will try to trace those as well tonight.

Thank you for this help, much appreciated!

TPMS, all you should have been doing was unchecking a checkbox in each module. So I would just recheck that checkbox and recode, hope it clears up. The long coding is recorded in any scan, so if you have a scan from before you started messing with it, you have the coding there. You're probably not even coding the gateway, just modifying its installed modules list (which it clearly knows is wrong because you have the J502 powered and so it's present on the CAN bus). Your code for gateway is the same as mine, 000303. But your instrument cluster coding differs on two characters from mine.

yours originally - no idea, find an old scan

    Smac770,

Does VCDS not identify what the value is increased/decreased by when toggling the option for TPMS? I'm wondering if me pulling my code would be beneficial at all to the OP?

Regarding the temp solution (i.e. the bag) - I've got it fairly high and taped to the inside of the rear quarter. I also left the flap open to minimize any breathing issues. Can you chime in on whether there's anything else that may be causing the front mid's and high's to not be active? I have a sinking feeling that it's the amp but I want to cover every base before committing to the repair. Being in Canada doesn't help as the cost of repair via Paulison Corp (after conversion) is over $500.

Yet another useful tidbit from you - the stack passes the optical signal from top to bottom. I did not know that for a fact so I had arbitrarily decided to start at the bottom - doing that was unnerving because I had no signal at each module until I arrived at the amp

As to stream's instruments coding, he has -8 (bit 3) in the first byte (byte 0) and -1 (bit 0) in the fifth byte (byte 4). So he disabled the seat belt warning (no idea why one would do this) and he disabled the TPMS awareness. But who knows which change the module is unhappy with. Don't know if he has sufficient scans before and after any changes to know the cascade effect of things he's attempted.

If you have the B&O amp, that means you have three speakers in the front left and the front right. The door midbass driver is on one amp channel, and the door tweeter and the dash midrange are on another amp channel. So if the tweeter and midrange are not working, you look at the amp channel. But if the tweeter and midbass are not working, the common there is that the wiring has to pass through the body to door wiring plug. So you're probably looking at the amp channel. But it's the same for left and right? The front midbass drivers, the rear left and right speakers (3 each also), and the dash center channel and subwoofer are all working fine?

Yeah, the wiring diagram document shows the routing of the optical cabling logically (device to device order), but not physically (so can't say exactly where the cable lies in the car).

No, just like your prior scan, the 5th byte (byte 04) is 03.

    Made some progress today.

    1) Went back to old coding and Instrument fault is now gone.

    2) Optical loop bypass arrived in mail yesterday. I went through left stack and found the Radio/Tuner Receiver (4F0035541N) being the problematic module. With the bypass loop in place of the module the MMI is back up. No sound is coming out of the CD player, but battery is low so hoping that might be the issue. Car is on charger now and will try later to see if sound comes back. Does anyone know if the Radio/Tuner Receiver is removed could that cause elimination of sound?

    @rand0mher0 , do you have a Radio/Tuner Receiver (4F0035541N) available for sale?

I would not expect the absence of the radio tuner on the MOST bus to impact playback of other source devices. Possibly the low battery voltage had kicked in energy management and disabled entertainment output. You have the scan tool, what's it say.

Did you test the 8-pin plug that goes into the radio? Pin 1 should be ground, pin 2 should be 12v. If 12v is present across those pins, then it would seem your radio unit has simply died for whatever reason.

I did test the 8 pin plug and it is getting 12V, so looks like the radio unit is toast, i swapped out the amp for my spare and I now have sound. Only problem it only comes out drivers side so need to remove component protection coded. Is dealer only place that can do this?

So i am definitely getting water on left and right sides, most likely the culprit of killing radio module and B&O amp. So need to figure how that is happening too.

Yeah, CP in effect for the J525 is only front left output is active. Dealership is the easiest way to deal with it.

I'd be checking those rear sunroof drains, and if not those, then probably something to do with the hatch/body seal. The seal of the rear windows and rear lid window are possible too, but wouldn't be my first suspicion.
