    What's the best Oil? 1.8T AWM 188k

Sorry to ask such a dumb question but Whats the best type of oil to use with the 1.8T engines? I'm asking because I haven't found any info on the car and a web search has a few options. The po used 15w30 shell Rotella T4 diesel engine oil. Specs I see online say 5w30 or 5w40 HPS, HCL,VMO (not even sure what those acronyms are). Would you recommend full Syth or anything like that with the sludge issues I keep reading about? I do plan on doing an engine flush this first change just in case since I don't know the oil change history on the car. Just trying to get all bases covered.

This is a can of worms. Everyone has different personal preferences. I have a B5 S4 and I've only put Mobil 1 0w-40 European spec in there, I plan on using the same in the A4. is it the best? Debatable.
The HPS, HCL, VMO are the detergent standards that are found in the oil, and honestly thats probably the most important thing to consider other than the oil weight. but as long as it meets the VW 502 00 standard you'll be good. 15w-30 is probably too viscous, I wouldn't really put anything more than 5w-40 in there. You want the oil to be fairly thin on start up to be able to get to the turbo as soon as possible.
But like I said before everyone will have their own idea on whats the best. Choose you brand and then google the brand and "oil selector", generally speaking, the brand should have a list of recommended oil types that they suggest you use.
Word to the wise Walmart probably has the cheapest oil you can find. I buy a 5qt jug for 23 to 26 bucks. Buy your oil filter at OReilys though, all the filters at Walmart are trash. bang for the but Wix are my go to.

Yeah I was surprised to see it was 15w30 when I started reading into the different info I was finding. Granted I live in the desert so it doesn't really get what most would consider cold. I will continue to read into the matter for sure.

If you want to save some money Castrol EDGE 5W40 full synthetic is a great oil as well. Can be found at Walmart for ~$25 a 5 quart jug.

0W is not needed unless you live on the north pole. If you want another good pao based oil get some Ravenol VST. Holds up very well.

If you have a high mileage engine with og bearings get Valvoline VR1 5w50. Its on the lower side of 50 weight which means it will be 40 after a few km.
