Audi RS7 Engine not starting

On random occasion when trying to start the car the car cranks up but stops. Sometimes this happens 7-8 times before the car starts up normally.

When the car is trying to start I get “Engine starting...” message on the center screen between the gauges.

No weird noises per se, has almost 60k miles.
Started about a month ago, doesn’t happen every time. Only once in a while. But when it does, I need to try starting 5-6 times to get it to start.

You park inside or outside? Park outside enough here in the arctic tundra of Michigan and you'll know for certain when your battery is dying.

Parked outside, located in VA. it’s been raining a bit around here for a while but not sure if it’s related. Front right parking sensor keeps on crapping out and going off and I need to keep it clean when it rains but nothing that indicated battery might be the issue. But will see if I can grab one tomorrow.

The engine does crank, no clicking or anything.

It literally just sounds like an engine is supposed to sound like when you're starting the car, but just sounds like it's struggling to start.

I am in no way saying that this is the problem but my last car (Chevy) would have an intermittent hard start but it only happened after getting gas. I replaced the evap canister purge solenoid and no more problems.


You need 3 things for ignition. Fuel, air, and spark. From your description it sounds like it has the spark and air since it cranks for an extended period before starting which leads me to believe its all in the fuel delivery to the engine. Could be fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, leaking injector . . . . . . .

Most likely a battery. Probably not measuring up to spec CCA’s.

Is there a way to check battery voltage for the A7/S7/RS7?
Did a quick search and looks like the only way is aftermarket or with a multimeter? Or am I missing something.

I have a similar issue that happens intermittently, maybe 2-3 times a month. It turns but doesn't fully start, but ALWAYS will start on the second attempt at pushing the start button. No other symptoms or issues.
My battery is relatively new, so it's definitely something else or maybe just a random fluke.

Dealer just charged me $152 to check the battery while doing something else, so don’t go there.

Multimeter or take it out and run it in to Autozone/similar.

If it’s cranking it’s not the battery.
Cranking means turning over but not starting.

It’s gotta have sufficient voltage to turn over.

May be a bad fuel pump. I’m sure by now you will have a code. Try scanning it. But I would look under the back seat and see if you can feel/hear the pump turning on

I wish I could have remembered the thread, it was titled somthing about intermittent hard or no start.
I vaguely remember a fuel pressure issue being a problem. Somthing about dropping fuel pressure. Ecu updates was the supposed fix.

It definitely doesn't sound like a battery issue since I've had cars/bikes with dying battery so I know what that sounds like but seemed like a lot of people were leaning towards dead battery.

I can see if it might be a fuel pump issue, but when it tries to start and cranks, it will stop automatically after 2-3 seconds even if I have the push to start pushed.

Where in VA are you? I could do a vcds scan for you if you dont have it - might show something thats not throwing a light.
