Will AFS headlights work in a non-AFS configuration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm rebuilding my 2015 A5 and I need to get a new pair of used headlights. My headlights are currently non-afs however I noticed that there are more AFS headlights online than non-afs. I read online that OBDEleven has a tool that can retrofit a b8.5 headlight to b8, but this isn't really the same thing. I don't even care for the actual AFS function, I just need a working pair of headlights

What exactly would I need to make this work?

From what I've read AFS headlights came only prestige models. Not sure if it was a option for premium plus
But if u want to add AFS to a none AFS, there needs to be wiring etc done. Not plug and play. I wanted to put afs headlights on my s5 prem+, but it's not easy install and it's expensive. Over 1k

I meant to say the headlights for AFS headlights for my b8.5 is pretty expensive and requires wiring and what not.
I didnt get it done. I'm sure a lot is involved.

Not possible unfortunately. Long story short I accidentally bought an AFS headlight when rebuilding my 2013 A4 and tried everything I could to get it to work properly to no avail. Ended up having to buy a non-AFS light.

Did it have to do with wiring? I assume it would take a great of rewiring or adding new wires maybe.

Yeah, the AFS headlight has two separate plugs, and the Non-AFS has just one. So it will light up and technically work, but the headlight leveling won't work and will cause an error on the dash.

I focused all my efforts on trying to disable the headlight leveling to eliminate the error but no dice. Even had I been successful, I would've only considered that a temporary fix though until a correct headlight could be sourced.

Oh. So I dont c how that would work. Definitely not worth it. I cant imagine the cost to hire some to rewiring the set up.

    Hello,
I'm am just finishing up a TDI Manual swap into a 2009 A4 Avant for a shop project. We have decided to do a B8.5 Facelift on it as well. So we went with E-codes and wanted to add the AFS. I have read through here and am seeing everyone's thoughts on these. I know this is an A4 but don't see why it would be different for an A5 etc. I happen to have a 2012 A4 Avant that came with AFS from the factory. Got a good look at that as well as lots of wiring diagrams. While it will be costly I don't believe it will be undoable at all. Here is what I have gathered so far.

    - AFS headlights(the B8 and B8.5 are the same just different between AFS and non)
    - AFS range control module to replace non AFS range control module
    -New connector housing for that
    - Repin said range control module
    - add front level sensor for left front suspension
    - run wires from level sensor to range control
    - add ground to pin 14 at headlight plug
    - add power to pin 4 headlight plug
    - code J519 module(maybe)

This is all thats different. There is no second plug on the headlight for AFS. its the same 14 pin plug as not AFS. on a non AFS car pins 1-4 control headlight range. on a AFS car its only pins 1-2 and pin 3 is blank and pin 4 is power and 14 is ground. The AFS cars have another module built into them(3 total, Xenon control, LED control, and AFS control) This is the theory at this point so Ill let everyone know how it goes. All the parts have been ordered so here we go!

    Thanks
    -Rory

B8 to B8.5 headlights are slightly different shape. AFS to non-AFS, not sure about B8 but B8.5 AFS have only one plug, not the two mentioned earlier in the thread about B8? I'm only knowledeable on B8.5 but the B8.5 AFS headlamps have a separate module for the cornering motors mounted on top of the headlights, also B8.5 AFS cars had a front & rear level sensor whereas B8.5 non-AFS cars only had the rear. I think the B8 cars all had two sensors though? I've got a set of AFS headlamps out of the car in my shop now (E-codes) if anyone needs pics or part #'s.

For the type 8K (B8 A4) and type 8T (B8 A5), all halogen headlamps have a single 10-pin plug and all HID headlamps have a single 14-pin plug to the vehicle.

Without adaptive suspension (which has level sensors on all four wheels), HID had front and rear level sensors on the left until Nov '08. After that, 8Q3 had only a rear level sensor; 8Q5 continued with front and rear sensors.

There is no range/cornering control module in B8.5. That functionality was integrated into the J519.

That is all correct for the B8 as well. Single sensor for non afs and extra module on headlight as well.

right. thankfully for my situation it makes it easier to retrofit the AFS in a B8 rather than an 8.5 since the module is seperate. I imagine you could do it in a B8.5 while swapping the J519. I just imagine it being more complicated perhaps
