    Stuck Folding Mirror

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright guys so my driver side mirror is stuck in the up position. I’ve been trying all day to fix this but the best I got was hearing a slight tick (motor) but no movement. Is there a way to remove the mirror and manually put the mirror back in the down position and then reinstall? I would do this and then off folding mirror option in MMI.

Any help with stuck folding mirrors would be much appreciated! I tried finding the motor alone though only had luck finding the actual motor that moves the glass mirror piece, not folding the actual assembly.

Try resetting the mirror system. Accomplish this by placing the mirror operating knob on the folding icon, allowing both mirrors to fold and then back to either the heat setting or parking setting.

I tried this but it won’t budge. My passenger side never worked since I got the car, made me believe only the driver side folded though now that the driver side failed in the up position I’m starting to think I need 2 motors.

I also read up that someone replaced a module instead of the actual motor/mirror assembly at the dealership, does anyone have any information on which module or if this could also be an issue?

Is there a way to perform a reset of the electrical systems (like unplugging the battery) without ruining anything or having to get anything programmed?

After searching some more it seems people think the actual motors fail, a module or there is a connectivity issue.

    1. Does anyone know which module controls the folding mirrors? I see there is a window control door module and a side assist module, I believe one of these may control the folding mirror motor?

    2. I see Audi has had issues with copper wire connections breaking in the past, I plan to run 12v to the motor wires to figure out if this is a motor issue or connectivity issue. I also read that when one mirror fails (my passenger side never worked since I recently purchased the car) the other begins to have issues, so I’m assuming my passenger side mirror may have a connectivity issue/bad module.

Any help would be appreciated, love the car otherwise just hate to have such an annoyance in an otherwise nice car.

My experience with this was that Audi wanted $2k for a fix. They said the entire mirror had to be replaced and they didn’t seem to do much diagnostics work. An independent shop told me it was most likely a wiring issue before Audi had it. It seemed that Audi didn’t want to waste the time to do wiring, or perhaps that would’ve been more expensive. Anyway, independent shop replaced a small black box located somewhere in the door card, I believe this is the module you were referring to. That didn’t fix it. I ended up getting a part out replacement mirror for about $560. That wasn’t a 100% fix, as it apparently folded very very slowly. Had the independent shop that installed the mirror “clean” the wiring, and now it’s a good as new. For now.

Also, independent shop took mirror off, gave it power and verified it folded. This ruled out the mirror to me, and assured me it was wiring, but what do I know.

The box I’m referring to was about $40 used on eBay. I *think* this is the box I tried https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F143183855669 if not that exact one, it was something that looked just like it.

Awesome, is there anyway you could get details as to what “cleaning up the wiring” consist of mainly from the shop? I too believe it to be a wiring issue, I see Audi is infamous for pinched wires, I just have no idea where to look.

I'm having a similar issue though in my case the mirror won't fold up when I lock the car. This only happens on the passenger side, driver side operates as normal. Strangely enough when I start the engine it first folds up (aligning with the driver side) and then folds down again.

Simultaneously I'm having issue with the door lock on passenger side. Went to Audi and the guy told me it's likely an electronic issue and the door and mirrors are somehow connected. I'm having it properly checked next week though the Audi rep told indicated that replacing the door lock mechanics would likely cost $450 ex. labor which sounds absolutely ridiculous. These parts should last a car's life IMO.

I am believing there is a wiring short on the passenger side, it seems that the passenger side fails first followed by the driver side.

Does anyone have access to wiring schematics for the mirror folding mechanism?

Something like this? Will have to do more digging to find the interior wiring harness this assembly connects to if that's helpful, but this website is the best free Audi resource out there I've been able to find. https://audi.7zap.com/en/usa/audi+a6+s6+quattro/a6q/

Do you have an A6? I have a 2016 with a service manual specific to my car but it might help you. Would you like a link to it? It had about 9000 pages so you'll have to do the digging lol.

Yes I do have a 2012 Audi A6, I would not mind that! I feel as though this is a problem that is common enough to plague a few A6's and should be solved once and for all.

After doing some reasearch on the diagram above and seeing which out of the 3 plugs (labeled 10, 11, 12) contain the wires for the electric motor, I see that plug #10 is 2 pins and may control the folding motor mechanism.

Is there is fix for this? My passenger side mirror died, as well. The mirror glass moves and the turn signals work, too. The mirror just won't fold. I cannot hear any sound from it when it is supposed to fold in.

I have a 2016 A6 with the driver side folding mirror problem. If you still have that manual for your car, could I get the link to it? Thank you!
