    2018-2019 Airbags - Single Stage?

Does anyone know if the 8V (specifically 2018-2019) uses a single stage steering wheel airbag? It appears to me it does by looking at this picture, but can anyone identify what the yellow, ignitor looking connector does (the one that has a string wrapped around it)? Some seem to have it, some do not?

Found my answer (located in Audi A4 ‘08 Self-Study Programme 409)

"All Audi A4 '08 models distributed world-wide are equipped as standard with an adaptive driver airbag. This is a single-stage solid fuel generator with an additional igniter for adaptivity. The airbag control unit J234 activates igniter 1, thereby in turn igniting the ignition charge. The actual propellant charge is subsequently ignited via nozzle ports. When the gas pressure produced by combustion of the propellant charge exceeds a predetermined value, the gas generator housing changes shape, thereby providing a clear path to the airbag via the inner housing and the metal filter. The airbag unfolds and is inflated.

An additional igniter - driver side airbag igniter -2- N250 - is located on the back of the airbag outside the gas generator. A cord which seals an additional discharge port is wound around this igniter. The discharge port is kept sealed as long as the cord is held in place by the igniter.

Depending on the severity of the accident and the driver's seat position, the airbag control unit J234 activates the igniter 2. The igniter housing ruptures and the cord is released. The volume of the airbag increases by approx. 4 litres, and the additional discharge port is opened. This discharge port allows more gas to escape from the airbag. The airbag is "adapted" to suit the occupants."

I'm guessing I can removed the corded solenoid so the bag acts like a non-corded one. I may check part numbers on the bag/ignitor itself to make sure there is no difference there.

? You ask about the Mk3 A3 (type 8V) facelift (MY17+) but then quote text for the Mk3 A4 (type 8K). The post is old, so this is simply to provide correct info should others find it in future searches.

The type 8V uses a single stage airbag. If you look at the airbag harness, there is only one igniter plug. It's probably a self adaptive vent variation, such as https://www.motortrend.com/news/2013...rating-191995/ So not to be confused with the old static single stage airbag designs at the turn of the century. But it's still single stage, single igniter, single plug.

Why would the Mk4 A3 (type 8Y) be grouped with the Mk3 A3? Completely different vehicles. And it appears the 8Y went the same way as the Mk3 TT (type 8S), with single stage for 5C0 (RoW) and adaptive (dual plugs) for 5C1 (NAR).
