Q5 3.0T stage 1 power upgrades - what can I expect in gains?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking at a Q5 and it seems there is a very large difference in HP and torque between this and the SQ5 but they seem to have the same engine. I looked at some sites and it's saying that a stage 1 on a 3.0T you can expect 400-418 hp on 93 octane & 391ft lbs of torque. Is this what can be expected from any 3.0T engine or just the S4/S5 and SQ5? I'm also looking at a 2009-2011 A6 avant 3.0T and am wondering the same about the tune. Can anyone shed any light on what can be expected from either of these non S models?

The engine is the same, the tuning is different, the tune will be the same result either way. I can't speak to the A6 engine. There are several threads here discussing Q5 vs SQ5 as well if you want to read more, just search a little and should be able to find them without too much trouble.

Yes, factory tune on Q5 3.0 and SQ5 is different. Their way of trying to force you into the S and charge a premium. Also why they quit offering the 3.0 in the Q now. Just tune your Q5 and be happy.

    Both of these ^

The only difference in tunes between the same engine in different vehicles may be the intake and exhaust system that could have a negligible effect on tune output.

Tuning the 3.0T Q5 and the SQ5 is like a road trip (to the same place) where two different cars leave from two different locations. You both start from different places and take different routes, but in the end the destination is the same.

I just thought I would try to visualize it for people, since some people still want to believe that the same Stage X tune for a Q5/SQ5 produce different numbers

    A tuned Q5 3.0T and a tuned SQ5 will perform identically.

The main difference between the Q5 3.0T and the SQ5 are the front brakes and then the quad exhaust really. The SQ5 comes with a small heat exchanger that the Q5 3.0T does not I believe but unless you go dual pulley it doesn't matter.

The gearing is different on the Q5 vs SQ5, so while the motors will make similar power, the car will perform differently. Gearing is slightly taller in the SQ5.

So the answer is yes, you will see the same gains In a Q as you would a SQ5, nothing to be concerned about there(same final HP#s) . As for the A6 avant you would have to make sure it has the ZF8 (8 speed) I was thinking these came with a earlier 6 speed ZF transmission. The transmission tunes for the ZF 8 make a huge difference in performance so just make sure whatever you pick has a ZF8. As far as the gearing between the Q5 and the SQ5 it is insignificant and has not proven to provide a performance edge to the Q.

Thank you to everyone who has replied, I really appreicate your help and information! I kind of figured that the tuning would be the same or similar but wasn't sure as I had heard a few people saying they didn't make near the same power.

As for the A6, I don't think any of them came with the ZF8, so I'll have to look into that, I'm guessing the tune is pretty different with the 6sp trans.

All of the audi 3.0 supercharged engines from the same Era (S4, Q5, SQ5, A6, A7) are the same and can have the same tune.

Be nice if there was list of the tunes and the actual power that they make. I see it on Apr and Unitronics site but if there was one list or spreadsheet that covered them all that would be great for those about to choose which one to go with.

With stage 1 tune you will go from 272 hp on the S-Line Q5 to something in the 400-420 hp range with just about all the tunes with no other mods. Other variations with this engine will be similar. Yes, over 100 hp gain just from the tune.

It’s hard to be exact, as there are variables including testing conditions, atmospheric temp and pressure, and individual engine variations. There can be 20-30 hp variation in power comparing brand new cars with identical engines when dynoed the same day in the same dyno. But 400-420 crank hp would be a reasonable estimate.

2012 is when the ZF8 made it to the A6. There is no tune currently offered for the ZF6.

To quote Arin from APR, "Stock hardware...4xx awhp" Oh wait, that's the other 3.0T, the one where the T stands for the thing you think it does. 😉😂 Upcoming stage 1 full E85 numbers for the B9 3.0T look bananas!

i went with IE and am super happy with my results and you will definitely need a tcu tune to maximize your results but trap speeds is a good indication on how much power your putting down
