Tired of dirty exhaust tips? Well here you go!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just as the title says, got tired of keeping the tips clean all the time so I ended up painting them gloss black. To my surprise, I think black tips are so much better than chrome in my opinion. Now I need to get black gloss badges to match it.

    Sanded and primed

    Painted and clear coated

    End results

    Looks good!

I keep pondering the contrast between the black tips and the S3 badge and rings on the rear of the car.
Sometimes, I feel that if I make the tips black, I should also replace the front/rear rings and the S3 batch with similar black ones.

I think I’m going to go this route with my wife’s S3. Sick of seeing the tips filthy. Are the stock tips held in with hardware?

I feel the same way. Will definitely get Black Gloss badges to match the tips but deciding if I should go OEM. Not sure if any of the after market badges are good though...

It may be depending on the year. Mine are held by spring loaded clips. I sprayed liquid wrench silicone and let it sit for a few minutes then used a rubber mallet to slowly knock them off from behind. Once it moves, you can remove them by hand with a breeze.

Thanks! I’ll have to take a look once my wife is home.

The black S3 badge I bought off eBay is still holding, as well as the black rings after two years of nor-cal weather. I also have black tips but not the OEM ones

OEM Black "Rings" Kit part number is ZAW 098 010 B DSP. ECS sells it too - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...zaw098010bdsp/
For the "S3" badge, ill see if I can find an OEM part number

Nice!! You won't happen to have a link? I've checked E-Bay and they all are from China. Although WINNAUTOSPORTS based here in California sells them as well.

Sure let me look. If you are willing to spend a little more for OEM - Here is the RINGS kit part number - ZAW 098 010 B DSP. ECS sells it too - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...zaw098010bdsp/

EDIT - I am pretty sure I bought my black S3 badge from one of those Chinese suppliers. The trick is to find one thats a bit nicer quality when looking. Out of all the ones on there, I think they are all made at the same two factories lol

This is the one I bought from before - https://www.ebay.com/itm/S3-S4-S5-S6.../143475213392?

POPS, looks great. What actual paint / products did you use? High heat engine enable or the super high temp header paint stuff? Is that glossy or a satin black?

Thanks! I just used VHT High Temp Gloss Black, Primer & Clear coat products. No need to use the super high heat.

Thanks, that was my thinking as well. I just saw Rustoleum had a little DIY guide on their site and they recommend/use their equivalent 2000F high heat product. But it only has flat black option and has a much more involved cure process, I'll stick with the ~500F engine enamel paint.

You are correct. I used the 500F VHT products. I scuffed up the chrome tips with 100 grit sand paper for better adhesion for the primer.

Wow those look great! I agree having chrome tips was a hassle. They look great right after detailing but they get so dirty so quickly! I recently got black tips and a carbon fiber diffuser added. I have the black rings and the black S3 badge that will be installed next week. I recommend going OEM with the black rings. I bought them from Audi for $150. That might seem expensive but I know I'm getting a quality product and don't have to worry about a shoddy paint job or them being too big/small that is in issue on ebay. As far as the S3 badge I bought the Winn Autosports one badge for $30.

Thanks! I might just do that or I can get the rings and the S3 badge from Winnautosports for $85. Not sure about the quality though...

How hard were they to remove and what was your process? Also looking to tackle that this summer. Thanks!

You will need to check if your tips are welded as some earlier models are. Mine is a 2018 and they are not welded.
