    Downpipe heat shield importance?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking to get downpipes soon for my RS7p. Probably redstar, catted. I’m wondering how important the heat shielding really is. I don’t track the car or even go to the drag strip. I just like a fast car and want the louder downpipes like I had with my S7 (which had APR DPs). I know our engines get hot but does heat shielding make a practical difference when daily driving? I live in the Midwest with summer highs in the 90s for 2-3 months straight. Sometimes low 100s. Thanks.

i opted for the 399 heatshield option with my catted redstars...

they are double layered and claim up to 70% reduction in temps with the shielding.

    oh, they also look good!

heatshielding them makes for more heat stay in the pipes witch helps gasflow inside the pipes afaik and keeps heat out of the engine bay (especially when driving slow or at the stoplight). I can put my hands on the insulated heatshield after i have been driving here. Don't expect mirricles but it all helps.

    Lightbulb

to further what Dasquade mentioned, look at the sensor bosses in the naked vs. shielded(2 layers) in these downpipes

With installing, the bulkhead (it's not a firewall structural member but has a brace above it that likely does something) that has to be removed for replacement is fully shielded as well but with a thicker single layer of dimple....

found some good videos to show what is really happening with the swap. (youtube it)

Nothing is better than exhaust wrap overall, I would save the money wrap myself and have money left for a really good detail or 1/2 labor cost to have them installed

back in the STi days, I'd agree and did that (and turbo blankets as well... )

I'm letting them handle this one. With their pricepoint - GESI included- this is too easy to stress over as an additive.

    One and done.

nice collection!! (the Talon was the first turbo awd car i noticed growing up... game changer to me and would give my 5 liter mustangs fits!)

I’m not terribly concerned about the cost, although obviously a factor. I am slightly concerned about the small amount of size it adds to the downpipes. Maybe minuscule but since AMS won’t guarantee fitment for their pipes on an RS7 (they said something about less space due to turbo housing size), the red stars look similar and I’d rather not make them even bigger. Hopefully it’s a non-issue but it’s still on my mind before I buy the redstar.

And I have no doubt it lowers temps. The question is whether or not that actually matters in daily driving, especially considering the RS7 having better stock cooling than the S.

No issues here with my redstar with heart shielding on a S6. Plenty of room still and no rubbing.

can you post some pics of the pipes/install, if possible? (I'm in week five of waiting for mine and anxious!)

Very good to know. But I’m still slightly anxious as like I said AMS won’t guarantee RS7 fit due to apparently less space.

Sorry. Not really sure if this helps. Closest part is the top of the left downpipe

thanks for the pic. first i have seen of them installed since i got my s6. They look great. Do you have the GESI cat option, and if so, do you have any noxious exhaust gas smell in the interior?

Heatshields are of utmost importance, without their presence heat will seep any power gains and any heat soak into adjacent components is not advantageous.

I get that. On paper, keeping the engine compartment cooler is better. What nobody has yet answered is whether that has any practical, noticeable effect in daily driving for an RS7 (which has better stock cooling than S models).

Maybe the answer to that is unknown.

I have APR downpipes that I had Jet-Hot 2500F ceramic coated and then wrapped with heat wrap on my 2016 RS7. Honestly apart from looking cool I couldn’t tell you they make a difference in day-day driving, not that I notice anyway, it still get ridiculously hot in the engine bay.

    Yes, gesi cats.
I used new gaskets when I installed and for a week or 2 I was getting some odour in the cabin with the windows open only after spirited driving. Went back and retightened all the bolts under the car and no more smell.

The "practical" scenario depends heavily on driving conditions. You don't need to be on the track to do a WOT pull and that WOT pull generates a lot of heat out of the V8TT. The engineers wouldn't have put shielding directly below the cover for fun. Concentrating that heat is also important for the flow characteristic WITHIN the exhaust pipe. So practically speaking, I would opt for heat shields even in a "daily driver" scenario. An alternative to heat shielding might be ceramic coating, but I don't believe that is a thorough as an independent shield.

I could provide a calculation that provides numerical reference, however it wouldn't really explain the thermodynamic importance of a heatshield in this particular application.

Yeah they did a nice job, the upper pipes without the cats are coated on the inside too (in white as you can see in the 3rd pic). The other plus of ceramic coating is you can then wrap without worrying about corrosion from moisture retention, not that I think that would be much of a problem anyway with how hot these get on the 4.0TT.

Just a bit of a shame you didnt wrapped them untill the end of dp. Still left a good 30% of unshielded that is inside the engine bay, but everything helps offcourse :).
*mines are thermal zi coated aswell with isulated thick heatshield.

Yeah I ran out of wrap and was too impatient to wait for more to arrive before fitting them.

    Totally understand that ;)
...i installed the heatshield with the dp already installed all the way too the flex (had days itchy and scarved arms of getting in her deep 😱🤪...but glad i did and end result turned out perfect).

    unrelated question …

does anyone know if the redstar fits the akrapovic exhaust? really considering buying this… akrapovic downpipes are just too expensive
