New Q7 Owner. Finally got back into a TDI

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I Have been lurking and searching for a TDI and focusing more on the Touareg as you can find them everywhere on the cheap side.
Test drove a Q7 Prestige and actually loved it way more than a Touareg and somehow this White TDI found its way to my home.

I owned a VW Jetta Sportwagen which I sold in 2018 and have been wanting to get another TDI wagen but never expected that I’d get a Q7 instead.

Will post more pictures of it soon. It appears to be a well loaded version.

TDI S-Line Prestige with B&O AND the rear DVD system! That thing is fully optioned. Most people did not spring for the the $6,500 B&O upgrade and the entertainment system is exceedingly rare. Nice pickup!

2012 maybe? How many miles does it have?

2014 TDI Prestige with S-Line Plus.
It’s got or had 74k miles and now it’s up at 76k thanks to driving home for Christmas.

It’s got every available option minus the tow package and the alcantara headliner.

Driving home in a convoy with the wife!

I may have to total my A7 and we're looking at the Q7. What made you choose the TDI over the 3.0?

Thanks, any problems to watch out for? I'm probably going with a 2012 or 2015. I've read about the timing chain? My A7 is a Prestige with all the bells and whistles. I love my vented seats. I see the Prestige/S-line can come with air suspension?

I don't want to clog up this thread. Check the thread below for a lot of TDI owners checking in. We have not had ours very long but so far we absolutely love it. Yes, air suspension was an option.

For me it was the TDI engine. I looked at Touaregs but for tiny bit more you can get into a Q7 which has way more options. The sunroof was a must for me, I am a sunroof engineer.
The MPG was the other deciding factor. My commute is 75mi per day so my XC90 V8 as much as I love that thing would get 18mpg in the winter aorund 20 in the summer, so roughly 4 gallons of fuel per day or at today's rates about 10$.
The Q7 has been holding consistently 30mpg for me which may not seem like a huge deal but it does add up. The other thing I really like about the TDI vs a V8 is that torque you get early on which makes this 5500lb vehicle feel a lot lighter and quicker. The V8 you had to really get on it to get it to go.

The fuel economy is a big thing for me. We had a Nissan Rogue and the fuel economy sucked. It was supposed to be 26 or 28 on the highway and we were lucky to get 22. I had the 3.0T in my A7 and was amazed at how good the gas mileage was. I'd get over 30 on the highway all the time going 70 mph or so. I figured that people could get better with the diesel with this bigger and heavier vehicle.

Do you intend to do an ECM or TCM tune? Possibly the delete on the exhaust?

Nice ride by the way and thanks for the response.

Not shillin’ here for them, but on a “hey, it’s just $12” kind of whim, I bought some Hotshots Secret Diesel Extreme and put 10oz in the tank. The bottles are leaky and the stuff staaaanks. BUT! My mpg improved - no joke - average 8mpg for both city and highway driving. I’d been monitoring it closely since I got the 2011 Q7 TDI last month to get a sense of things. I was getting about 16mpg city and 22 highway. Now I’m at 21 city and 32! Highway. I drove 50 miles the day I put it in, and the “miles to refuel” remained at 540mi all day. That was Monday. The efficiency has stayed the same so far.

Anyway, I was astonished; you might give it a shot. I didn’t notice any harder pulls or anything (we already have 400ft-lbs of torque), but this morning the “miles to refuel” indicator ticked to 535mi, and that’s with 100% city driving today and yesterday. Just my recent experience. I got the TDI for the same reasons as you.

I have been using Stanadyne Performance forumla, and I just got some Hot Shots as I found it in the local store. Will try that next. Im consistently between 30-32mpg and my commute to work is around 35mi one way. Have been using the stuff one tank on, one tank off and I am not really detecting any MPG difference but the engine sounds a little bit more mellow with the stuff so I am using it none the less.
It did work well on my TDI JSW which was deleted and this stuff will reduce the tail pipe smoke on hard accelerations.
