APR Ignition Coils are designed to be a direct plug-and-play upgrade to factory coils, and provide greater energy output, ensuring a stronger and more consistent spark. The commonplace replacement of factory ignition coils with those taken from higher output Audi RS models, such as the 2.5T, is popularly believed to provide greater energy output. However, testing proves that they are no more powerful than the factory coils that are found on 1.8T and 2.0T engines. APR Ignition Coils increase energy output by 10%. They are a direct upgrade or replacement, and come with the coveted red housing made popular by the Audi R8!

    Features:

    • 10% more energy output than stock
    • Red housing with APR Logo
    • True upgrade, not just aesthetic
    • Direct plug-and-play

Ours increases spark energy over stock. They are more than just red coils.

Stupid question time: what does +10% spark energy mean in layman terms? My spark plug is 10% more likely to fire?
Stupid question follow up: does this benefit those of us that don’t have issues with spark being blown out (I don’t remember the technical term)

    Thanks,

The output energy is measured in millijoules vs dwell time. Ours will produce higher output, which will deliver a stronger spark. You'll have less chances of misfires from a wide gap, blowing out spark, etc. Coil packs (ignition coils) tend to fail, stock. They are a hot item to upgrade, but most no one actually offers an upgrade (except for a few companies that sell them for several hundred dollars a pop). But, there's no reason to be that expensive. *hence our pricing*

Are these rebranded MSD or are these all sourced from the same manufacturer? They appear to be twins MSD on top and APR bottom. Even if they are APR has got better pricing.

APR and MSD are both Holley brands.

Has any testing been done with the APR coil packs compared to a set of brand new OEM units running in an engine that shows the difference in terms that relate to engine performance? For example Hp/Tq, or mpg on new plugs and then the same on older worn plugs with a larger gap. So far I’ve only seen the chart that illustrates the electrical power of the coils. Even a graph of the engine idle Vibration frequency would help. Basically I want to know if there’s a reasonable expectation that the engine could even take advantage of 10% more power delivery. Now I’m not saying the OEM packs are great and can’t be improved upon but say the OEM units are Hypothetically designed to provide more than the spark needed for optimal detonation and have enough extra spark to keep things in the sweet spot as a plug wears and the gap grows, then what benefit would a coil with 10% more spark provide?

The Ultimate Ignition Coil Upgrade is Here! (APR Red Ignition Coils!)

    The way I understand it....

More power means more boost and more boost creates higher cylinder pressures and temperatures. Heat increases the resistance within the spark plug and the pressure and heat expand the plug gap (which is why they say to tighten the gap). Heat and pressure weaken the spark and can cause misfires, where the spark plug was too weak to ignite the air/fuel mixture.

A higher energy/power igniter can ensure a more reliable spark across the plug gap, withstanding more heat and pressure than oem.

The engine runs smoother, sounds smoother. It took me about 40 minutes to do the install although you can do it in significantly less time. It is a simple process. The APR coil packs seems to come with dielectric lime color grease already. I haven't had the time to go and test the car with draggy, I probably wouldn't be able to see an improvement because I went and I put the OEM wheels but like I said, the car runs smooth and sound better. I have 17000 miles on the car .

in summary, I think that the APR coil packs are well price and they are a component considered part of a tune-up so I would recommend it.

I know this is an old post but for those reading this, or Arin, I installed mine asap Jan 2019 and have about 30K miles on them. How often is everyone changing out plugs and coil packs?
