New to my Girl 2017 Q5 2.0T ---engine issues?

SO we picked up a 2017 Q5 2.0T w 26K miles - CPO. I was wondering how, if at all, the 2.0 has been improved since the first ones back in 2009?
My buddy has a 2012 with pretty large oil consumption issues.
I know his year had oil ring issues, chain tensioner and water pump issues---have these been resolved?
It looks like a motor that has had a number of versions and changes to---they keep using it though so I am hoping theyve figured out much of the issues?
Will it get to 200K or will it need heavy engine work as the earlier models seem to need?

Engines have definitely been revised since the previous 2.0t, thinking you’re referring to the CAEB engines with the oil problems, taking a guess you’re engine is the CPMB version. you should be good with the oil consumption, but timing chain is iffy to say the least, I just replaced mine at 84k, while i’ve heard of some being done at ~65k even on the newer 2.0t.

MY2015+ Audi's w/2.0T engines have the updated cam chains and tensioner. No issues reported regarding oil consumption. Can't speak to the WP issues getting resolved. I have a '15 AR with a 2.0T manufactured in late August 2014. It has 45k miles, and I change the oil (Castrol Edge 0W40) & filter (OEM) every 5k miles, which includes a Blackstone Labs UOA at every change.

The UOA results have consistently shown low wear metals (Iron, Copper, and Aluminum).

The Camshaft Adaptation Phaser Angle in VAG-COM is a good parameter regarding the health of the cam chain drive. @ 37k miles, this value for my engine was -1.26. People in the know start to get concerned about cam chain and tensioner wear when this # gets worse then -6.

Example of the VAG-COM data (not mine):

I would expect these latest revision cam chains and tensioners to be good to at least 100-120k mile replacement intervals.

you’re explanation is very good, my dealership recommends timing chains at 75k, whether it’s just a check or replacement. I unfortunately neglected it hoping to hit atleast 90k before really worrying about it but it managed to get to the 10th tooth on the tensioner before then. who knows how much longer before it would’ve gave out!

Your engine should be pretty bullet proof. Because your Q5 is a 2017 it actually does not have the same engine as the B8/8.5 A4, but rather the newer Generation 3 version of the EA888 found in the B9 A4, Porsche Macan etc. your Q5 should be immune to all the potential issues our engines face.

this is not true. they still use the CPMB engine. Audi started using the DAYB (gen 3) 2.0 in 2018, which isn’t even the same one used in b9 a4’s either which use a CYMC engine. it is possible that later production model 2017 q5 use the DAYB engine, I personally have never seen one in a 2017.

    I forgot the B9 Q5 wasn’t released until 2018 model year, you’re correct haha

Don't worry about these problems at 26kmiles with CPO, just get rid of it after warranty expires. That, unfortunately, is the best course of action with any Audis built on b8 and later platforms.
There's a member here which had a 2014 a4 where they supposedly fixed the problems, and it drank oil and needed an engibe rebuild, although it did have relatively high miles. As to whether how 2015 and later chains and tensioners hold up, we will understand this after they hit higher miles.

2010 A4 with 190k miles. Oil changes and tire rotations since 100k and still going strong. New turbo at 75k, timing chain and fluid swaps at 100k. APR Stage 2 since 45k. Your 2017 will hold up!

Many of us B8 (2009-2012) owners thought we'd be safe with a 2013+ since "all these issues have been cleared up". We thought wrong.
My 2015 with 161,000 Kms is going through roughly a litre of oil every 1700 kms.......and it will only get worse.

With both by 2009 and this 2015, the oil consumption seemed to hit at around 120,000 kms. Those who don;t drive so much may never experience the fun!
