Hi, first post here, so Merry Xmas to you all. I have had an Xtrons PX5 Oreo 8 retro (RNS-E lookalike) unit of 4GB/64GB variety, in my 2006 A4 B7 2.0 TDi Avant S-line non-Bose car, for around 3 years now and from day one there has never been any buzzing or interference, with the sound and amplification being clear and at least as good if not better than the Symphony II it replaced. I ran it for the first year with apps from the HU itself and with a bit of programming from a couple of free apps got both steering wheel canbus and Google Assistant/Phone mic buttons to work flawlessly - but it was a pain to update apps in car all the time. Then I bought Head Unit Reloaded for £5 and started using AA wired. Then I upgraded my phone and got wireless to work, again flawlessly (The developer is very helpful). I have both dashcam and reversing cam (number plate + parking sensors) accessories from Xtrons also working well. In fact it's a dilema because no aftermarket head units work as well in the later model cars I am looking to replace my now fine but 15 1/2 yr old car with and wireless AA is something I couldn't live without now - it being that good.
In those 3 years I have not had any problems with the Xtrons itself - the Dab dongle is rubbish and I have disconnected it after the second failed again; the radio is rubbish and a massive step backwards since there is no adaptor, despite all the ICE manufacturers claiming to offer one, that will properly replace the dual ariel connection of early B7s - so I use AA streaming radio apps now - the 1st rear number plate cam/sensors failed because of a cheap rca cable, the 2nd one seems OK at the moment. The quality of the plastic retro fascia is not up to the Audi plastic but I put a chrome strip on the bottom edge, a la RNS-E, which makes it look more oem and no one, who doesn't know, thinks it's not original - but it doesn't fit 100% and if you manage to engage all 4 cheap connectors, you will have a stuck hazard warning switch and cupholder and most likely have the devil of time getting the unit out again, as is the case for me now since an audio electrician replaced the number plate cam - best just to engage the top two and push it down a little. The PX5/6 difference is immaterial if you are using it for Android Auto/Carplay - since the requirement of just being a projection screen/BT + wifi Audio amplifier requires little cpu/ram overhead, although 4GBs is definitely better than 2.
Having been an A/V technician in the TV industry for many years, with recording and mixing and installation of sound/video systems I am almost sure hi/lo convertors will not eliminate hum or interference, only amplify it or otherwise - I believe they are only required too for the Bose oem cars - I never needed them on my non-Bose and all oem speakers work. If there is whine, say from the alternator then some form of suppressor is required, as in the old days. But as I say I have not had this issue since day 1 on my more or less bog standard Avant S-line, with onlythe multi-funtion steering wheel and BT phone installation from new, as extras.
Sorry for the long first post.
