    Remote start without extra key

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've done a bit of searching but can't find any clear answer to this: is it possible to install a remote-start system on our cars (mine is a '12 with auto trans. and advanced key if it matters) without leaving a key in the car?

To me it seems like leaving a key in the car is a crazy security risk... all a crook has to do is smash the window, hop in, press the button and drive off. Am I missing something with that?

Ive seen kits out there for our B8s but I’ve never seen one actually work.
Audi’s Kessy and Access/Start Authorization system is very complicated and is just a headache to begin with. Most newer Audi’s (09-current) that have a remote start installed usually end up at the dealer because they never work.

With a German car if it doesn’t have remote start from factory I would not mess with it, only asking for problems!

I have a 2009 A4 with the push key fob start/stop. On a cold morning, if I start the car by putting the fob into the ignition and then take the physical key out of the fob and use that to lock the driver side door manually with it, would that cause any harm or damage?

    Here is my workflow:
    1. Start car with key fob inserted into ignition
    2. While key is in ignition and car running/idling, remove the physical key from the fob
    3. Get out of the car, shut the driver door, use physical key to lock driver doors which locks all doors
    4. Go about my business inside
    5. Come out, unlock the driver door with manual key, hop in car, reinsert the physical key into fob
    6. Drive off.

Yes. I am getting a system installed on Monday. Viper + Dball2 = no keys needed. I only received one key when I bought my S4 used and I sure as hell am not paying Audi 400$ for a new key.

Interesting... let us know how it works out! Is your car a B8 (not 8.5)?

    Check out Fortin EVO.
    Installing it this week.
Kit comes with vehicle specific wire harness and require to tap 3 wires. 2 for can bus and 1 for brake signal. It has option to simulate your key so you dont have to leave your key in the car. Use your original audi remote to start and stop car. There is another post of few people installing same systems. Also can be expanded by adding 1 or 2 way remotes that work at longer distances.

Yeah I just read the thread about that one. It looks promising - I may give it a try!

Let us know how your install goes... are you doing it yourself or having a shop do it? Also do you have advanced key?

I have the Viper in my 2015 Q7. It works flawlessly. Installer used my valet key. It’s buried under the console. It won’t start the car unless they rip it apart and find the key. It did take 4 hours to install it. He said an American takes about 46-60 minutes.

I love it on a cold or hot day, great to not have to go to the car. As suggested before the remote system I’d use the wireless start and then leave the car and lock the door.

i found in many incidences ( including mine ) the dealer forgets to program that little black plastic key. Then afterwards the dealer wants money to do it .. I bought my car used from a dealer no less and when i went back they wanted 200 bucks to program that little black key. i told them to go pound sand.

Hey just to "close the loop" on this, what I hoped for definitely IS doable... at least on my car!

I ordered the Fortin "EVO-AUDT1" which is just the EVO-ALL module packaged with an Audi T-harness, from Amazon. I received the wrong thing (no guy, a Ford is not the same as an Audi), got it replaced, and the wrong thing showed up again. So I ordered from a seller on ebay and finally got the right thing. I also ordered the required "flashlink" cable, created an account on their website, and downloaded and installed the "Flashlink manager" software on my PC.

I first went through the process to load the correct firmware to the unit and program its settings. With the manager program in non-pro mode, it was very easy... basically it asks you a few simple questions, you answer them (things like are you using a t-harness or not and do you want to use the factory remote), and it uploads everything to the module.

Next was probably the hardest part... the wiring, and honestly it wasn't hard, although you do need soldering skills to make the connections properly. I thought the CANbus wires might be hard to locate but they're not. I freaked a little when the wire colors on the brake light switch didn't match the guide, but I realized the closeup photo in the guide has the wire colors wrong - the non-closeup photo is correct as is the diagram. Getting to the back of the key thing on the dash was not fun either, but now that I've done it I could probably do it again in 5-10 minutes.

The one tricky part was that step 1 on the programming instructions says "connect the black data link connector", but doesn't say *what* to connect it to. I thought they meant connect it to the flashlink thingy, but there's actually a black plug on the t-harness and you're supposed to plug *that* one into the unit.

Other than that, I carefully followed the instructions in the guide and it worked the first time. The car did some weird things during the programming process, but now that that's done, all seems to be normal.

Altogether the job took me about 4 hours, but I was working very slowly and methodically, and struggled quite a bit with what had to be removed and how to get to the connector on the back of the key port.

A proper system should shut the car off when the brake or clutch is pressed and the key isn't in range. Does this system do that?

I have the compustar system, it shuts the car off as soon as the door is opened. I had it installed at synergy automotive protection in berlin, nj, they used the valet key, they cut off the portion that is laser cut so if its ever removed, it cant be used for anything. All it uses is the RFID in the back of the key.
