edit... did some research on here tonight and updated the post but have more questions.
hi guys. I took the car to the dealer and off the bat they suggested pcv valve. Once the car was diagnosed, they suggested the oil strainer/screen thing that everyone references. I asked how that would make the sound and they said that there is a check valve in there as well. I later figured out that the strainer/pcv are the same thing but different people use different phrases as far as what it's called.
Finally my car had been leaking a little coolant and they said that the thermostat was leaking (which they told me about last time it was serviced; they said low on coolant) and suggested I do that while the car is apart. They said that the part was about $250 and the labor was about $565 for a total of right around $850. They said that the labor would be double if the car wasn't already apart. The work is being done at the local dealer.
My questions are:
-is it even the thermostat or is it likely the gasket per the January 2018 bulletin page 25 of 38?
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...38342-9999.pdf
-how much should it run to change the thermostat with the work being done?
-approximately how much additional labor is associated with the changing of the thermostat?
-what's the going rate for work to be done at the dealer on mechanical work like this? Even ballpark is fine. I need to call tomorrow and get a breakdown of everything.
-how much should it run to change the spark plugs also? should I change the spark plugs while I'm in there? Is it worth the while and expense?
Here's a pic of how torn down the car should be for the oil separator

thanks!
