Howling/whistling sound at idle? Quiets down at rpm..

    Hi all,

Car was fine last time I drove it. The wife drove it about 3 miles to get her nails done and upon return said it was "whistling". I started it up and at idle 3-5 seconds after start up, it is indeed whistling good. Very audible. When I rev it, it sounds better or quieter (as far as the whistle).

I'm wondering if it's a turbo bearing failure or if it is a bearing failure in any of the accessory drive. Thoughts?

    edit, car is a 2014 rs7 with 50k miles

Likely PCV failure. This happened to me a few weeks ago with my 2014 S6 with 59k miles. The whistling noise was loud and embarrassing sounding. Audi issued an extended warranty for the crankcase ventilation valve for 120k miles or 10 years. If this is the issue then Audi will cover it free of charge.

Here’s info on the extended warranty: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...r-PCV-failures

that sounds like it. Here's a question, if it has boost, will it quit whining?

Not that I would like to put boost to an already bad situation but just asking. When I did rev the car to 2500 or 3k rpm, it did quiet down a little.

That’s correct, the noise subsides under acceleration.

So this morning I fired up the car to try this and it isn’t doing it ... for now. I’ll keep this in mind for next time.

It's a biggish job. Same sort of labour as required to get to the notorious oil strainer.

Welcome to the club. This is your excuse for a turbo upgrade.

Haha! I’ve been holding off on the temptation to even tune the car yet. Just milltek exhaust so far. Hmmmm...

My car is at the dealer getting this extended warranty fix done right now. I am paying extra to have the check valve and screen replaced while they are in there. Going down there this afternoon while they have everything open to inspect the turbos in person. I'm about to go Stage 2 (next week) so I got lucky that this happened while the car is still stock! FYI, the noise didn't happen until the car was warmed up. After a few drive cycles, the CEL came on. Whistling like a teapot.

How many miles on the vehicle, when the PCV noise started? > 35k miles?

edit... did some research on here tonight and updated the post but have more questions.

hi guys. I took the car to the dealer and off the bat they suggested pcv valve. Once the car was diagnosed, they suggested the oil strainer/screen thing that everyone references. I asked how that would make the sound and they said that there is a check valve in there as well. I later figured out that the strainer/pcv are the same thing but different people use different phrases as far as what it's called.

Finally my car had been leaking a little coolant and they said that the thermostat was leaking (which they told me about last time it was serviced; they said low on coolant) and suggested I do that while the car is apart. They said that the part was about $250 and the labor was about $565 for a total of right around $850. They said that the labor would be double if the car wasn't already apart. The work is being done at the local dealer.

    My questions are:
-is it even the thermostat or is it likely the gasket per the January 2018 bulletin page 25 of 38? https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...38342-9999.pdf

-how much should it run to change the thermostat with the work being done?
-approximately how much additional labor is associated with the changing of the thermostat?
-what's the going rate for work to be done at the dealer on mechanical work like this? Even ballpark is fine. I need to call tomorrow and get a breakdown of everything.
-how much should it run to change the spark plugs also? should I change the spark plugs while I'm in there? Is it worth the while and expense?

Here's a pic of how torn down the car should be for the oil separator audi engine torn down.jpg

    thanks!
